Make great video for iDevices and the Web

If you're making video and sharing it online or on iPhones / iPads / iPods then you need Jan Ozer's new book.

Ozer is best known for his profusion of articles for magazines including PC Mag, Event DV, and Streaming Media, as well as his popular seminars at the Streaming Media Conferences and other events.

His expertise comes not only from shooting and producing video, but also from working with manufacturers for product evaluations and with application developers for in-depth reviews and comparisons.

And now Ozer has packaged up his experience and advice in his new book, chock full of detailed information and practical advice for getting the best video for today's most important distribution mediums: Apple iOS portable devices and H.264 Web streaming (just in time for the new HTML5 browsers).

The book starts with an introduction to streaming production and encoding parameters. The next set of chapters focuses on H.264 encoding and production, with specifics for preparing material for Apple QuickTime, Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and HTML5. The section on producing for iDevices and other mobile platforms then covers both video for download delivery via iTunes and for steaming over Wi-Fi or cellular.

Next, Ozer digs further into related issues for producing videos, including adaptive streaming (adjusting quality to the download bitrate without requiring a dedicated streaming server) choosing an encoding tool (for Mac and Windows), producing for related formats (Google WebM and VP6, and Microsoft Windows Media / WMV), and accelerating encoding on dedicated workstations.

Great book, an invaluable addition to your studio!

When I saw this book on Amazon last week I ordered it right away and with great interest have spent many hours pouring through it. I found that every time I picked it up I learned something new and helpful regarding prepping video files for distribution. If you're an independent producer like myself who manages and creates 1,000 of videos for clients there really aren't many places you can turn to for help with staying up to date with this very complex and fast changing field. You owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book and read it. It's a very current and invaluable resource to have in your studio which you'll find yourself turning to over and over again.

Definitive Reference for the avid streamer

Sometimes an Engineer needs a reliable source to do the initial testing and evaluation of new methodologies in video compression - there are so many moving parts to being a packet pusher, if not for Jan as a resource and this book, it would take an exhaustive number of hours to come up with the same conclusions and methods outlined in his reference. I have personally relied on Jan's insights for many years and my first dabbles into HTML5 and h.264 were guided (and expedited) by his thoughtful research and instruction.

This is new terrain for a lot of us, and everytime I refer back to this reference I am yet again greatful it is on my shelf. I own 2 copies, one I keep at the office and one for home - because who has the bandwidth to memorize EVERYTHING. I am excited to be compressing video now for iThings and thankfully Jan is here to help me find my way...

I couldn't put it down...despite having a 4 month old baby!

This book was really inspirational. It is a must read for any woman who is breastfeeding and working. Each story is 1-3 pages long so it is the perfect book to read with a baby. You just read it a story or two at a time. The stories are from all over the world and the women have come up with so many creative and wonderful ways to breastfeed and work. Some use pumps, some take their babies to work and some find nearby daycares, or babysitters who are willing to bring the baby to their workplace several times a day to feed. This book was amazing and I plan to buy it for all of my friends who are having babies in the future!

Inspirational book for new mums returning to work faced with the dilemma of how to breastfeed their babies. Good (short!) chapters that case study mums from around the world and how they oevercame their challenges to breastfeed their babies and work as well. Makes you realise that you *can* do it!

This book was an immensely helpful read to me when I was returning to work while my baby was only 6 weeks old. I was committed to exclusively nursing when I was with her and ensuring she only received my breastmilk when I was away. Reading how other mothers overcame similar and more difficult challenges than my own gave me the power and inspiration to do it myself!

Half-baked idea

I saw Tom talk to our NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) group recently. His books, which were written during manic episodes of his bipolar illness, seemed like the kind of ideas that might come from manic states. Or smoking dope. "Depression isn't a disadvantage, its an advantage!" "Why didn't I think of that before!" I listened to what Tom had to say but didn't hear many particulars. Although I was skeptical that he had anything really meaningful to say, I thought, "What if he does? It would be worth $20 bucks if he was right and it actually could change my whole life." I wish I had saved my $20 bucks. I would gladly send my book back for a refund.

Tom's book is the kind of book that gives "self-help books" a bad name. It promises so much more than it delivers - which are basically platitudes and further enticements for more insights. Assuming you are willing to shell out more money. In the last chapter of the book, which so far had delivered nothing much more than "every cloud has a silver lining," Tom makes mention of the one and two-day workshops he can sell you and his other book Bipolar Advantage.

Finally, Tom uses a big portion of the book telling us stories about saints who reached God by going through immense pain. Insinuating that we could do the same thing. I grew up Catholic and during church I we had a book "Lives of the Saints" that was available to read. Since mass was in Latin in those days and boring and repetitive, I read the book. The message I got from the book was that these saints came to God because of their love for him and their abilities to put up with the pain and still remain loyal to him. Not, as Tom would have us believe, because of the pain.

On the positive side, the book is well written. It just doesn't have much to offer except promises. The whole thing reminded me of a snake oil salesman. Buy this great product, it will cure all your illnesses. It will save your life." Balderdash! Don't say I didn't warn you. Save our money.

Acceptance and Awareness

There is something truly inspiring and revolutionary about this book and its message - that there are advantages to be gained from depression. Recovery, self awareness, spirituality, perception of the light within the darkness. These can be the gifts leading to recovery, a condition made possible through our perserverance in the face of "almost" insurmountable despair. Tom Wootton has scored a major win in our - and I mean consumer and nonconsumer alike - battle to understand in depth some of the mystifying choices laid before us on the path of mental "illness", esp. as it pertains to those of us living with a bipolar condition. It is up to us to do something with our lives, to not give in absolutely to the absolute immobility of depression. The author goes with honesty, clarity, and self revelation, into the heart of depressive episodes, offering sufferers and their companions a new definition for functionality ("Redefining Functionality") which helped me gain a wonderful new perspective on my condition. He speaks of the great spiritual masters in history - St. Teresa, St. Anthony, Milarepa, St. John of the Cross, & St. Francis of Assisi - and of their own paths of transformation. Through their mental and emotional pain, through their examples, we have been given great evidence of recovery. And through the courage of people like Tom Wootton who share their deepest personal history, we have tools we can choose to use to our advantage. As he states so eloquently, "Through brain research, genetics, modern psychology, and the synthesis of knowledge from cultures across the globe, we stand at the crossroads of a new paradigm of mental health. I believe it is one that will change mental illness into an advantage for everyone." In a chapter discussing what we can learn from others' examples, he tells us that "They have already shown us the way...We have tools they never had...We don't have to suffer to succeed...We don't have to be depressed again...Our condition demands introspection and change." He outlines how we get there from here, wherever here is for us, to recovery.

I hope that this book stirs discussion among NAMI groups, Peer Recovery Specialists, Psychiatrists and other mental health care workers, DBSA groups, and all those who have yet to find the advantages that await them within. The culture of perfectionism that dictates a world without people like me in it needs to pick up this book and educate itself. I also hope that reading this book will induce more readership of Wootton's previous material, esp. "The Bipolar Advantage". It is crucial that people realize, wake up to the fact that being a person with a mental condition is not a death sentence, does not have to be held over their head as a stigma, they do not deserve to be eradicated from the earth through genetic manipulation. We have gifts beyond price if we can only learn to spin the straw into gold. Tom Wootton lucidly and in detail explains how this is possible if we choose to do the work. This book is inspiring, sure to provoke discussion, thoughtful, and very well written. Bravo!

Really makes an impact

This book really had an impact on my life. I've had depressive bipolar states for as long as I can remember and dealing with this illness has become the most challenging thing in my life. When I started reading the book I was skeptical that there could be anything positive in depression, but I was looking for anything positive that might help me. Tom Wootton has created that in The Depression Advantage. Alpha- Numeric!

How welcome to see interest revived in the dazzling CGI series which premiered on ABC in the fall of 1994, and which was kicked off the air at the height of its ratings when Disney bought Capitol Cities/ ABC. At that time Claster Television packaged the first two seasons and syndicated it to over one hundred independent stations. Freed of the restraints of ABC's Standards and Practices code, The ReBoot studio in Vancouver B.C. made a third season that was a bit wilder, although I think still OK for kids, and with one continuous story arc. But the Disney cancellation meant that the many imaginative ReBoot toys made by Irwin failed to sell. The third season was never seen in the US until at the request of fans, Cartoon Network ran it along with seasons one and two.

Throwing caution to the wind, the studio- Mainframe Productions/ BLT/ Alliance made a fourth season, such as it was, actually two feature length episodes. What the shows gain in edginess they lose in the innocence that made the original series an instant winner, and ReBoot, known for parodying popular culture, largely became a parody of itself. Both season four shows are simply badly- written. There were also two IMAX rides created. At one time season three was available on four DVDs, but even then fans would write asking how to get seasons one and two. Like so many animated shows, ReBoot misjudged its audience, which would far prefer the innocent shows over the new "edgy" ones.

The Art of ReBoot is a long overdue tribute to the world's first all CGI show. It's a hardback about 10 X 7, about a hundred full color slick pages. There is no text except small comments from designers worked around the montage style pages. It's published by Arcana Studio/ Beach Studio/ DMF, with Jim Su listed as producer, not of the ReBoot series, that was Chris Brough, but of this book. Su's idea was to give credit to all the animators and designers behind the scenes, reversing the policy of early cartoon studios of witholding credit. This approach gives readers an insiders' view of ReBoot from the artists' perspective.

Inluded are numerous character and set designs by Brendan McCarthy, along with color shots from the show of the final versions. The final fourteen pages, titled ReBoot Re-Imagined, show the ReBoot characters reversioned in various styles of graphic novels. Many of these artists are better known for other properties, including Spiderman, Transformers, Marvel Comics, and X- Men. Some also work for DMF, a Toronto comic book/ graphic novel company, and the Arcana Studio. This book is a dazzling tribute to a series many viewers remember fondly. Hopefully revived interest will spur the first two seasons' release on DVD, and maybe even reboot ReBoot back to the air (in its classic form, not an 'edgier' one).

Nice 'little' book...

I like the Art of Reboot book - It contains all the stuff any keen ReBoot fan would want to see is here - Vehicle designs, sets, all the characters...

The artwork is interesting - its nice to see plenty of hand-drawn concept artwork, as well as the various coloured pieces and variations between the way the concept art went in relation to the final CG work.

A good book - though beware the small size (7" x 10.5") when you get it. I was expecting a larger book that would look proud placed on my coffee table... Not something I looked like I picked up for the kids.

Nice book, but I'm no fan of the physical format of it.

The Art of Reboot

Great book! I'm a hopeless fan of the series, so this kind of book is just for me. The book is full of bright illustrations and original animation drafts as well as comments from its creators, as they recall how this cartoon was being brought together.
Although the delivery was slow and it took three weeks to actually obtain the item after purchasing it, the wait was worth it.

There is a God!

Only God could have saved this man from death and more destruction after all of the things he had done, said and witnessed in his life. This book was sooooo good to me, that I could not put it down. I initially wondered could ONE person go through and do so much, but then I realized yes because when you go through all that this man has been through, there truly is a purpose for his life and I am so glad that he found it. God had you protected the entre time, Mr. Barr and I am so glad that you have made it through. The lesson you referenced about the little boy and the stone and the dirty hungry girl will impact me for the rest of my days. Thanks!

But for the Grace of God

By the time Burton Barr Jr. was twenty years old he was a married man, licensed and ordained in the ministry and was now ready to preach, something he had dreamed about since childhood. Although he got the "call" from the Lord early in life that didn't stop the streets from calling...offering crime and drugs to distort his mind, and that it did.

Burton Barr Jr writes a personal true testimony of his struggles with drugs and alcohol. I was surprised at how brutally honest Mr Barr is, he held back nothing when writing this book. He was a true drug addict who stole from his jobs and family to fuel his habits. He was in and out of prison countless times until he finally put his trust in God. Only then was he able to succeed in being the best husband, father and most importantly the best man he could be.

From what I read in this book it is only by the grace of God that Burton Barr is alive to tell his story today. His experiences are real. He is a living inspiration to all.

The Hoodlum Preacher is an excellent discusion piece.

God loves you no matter what

Burton Barr, Jr. felt he had been called to preach at the tender age of nine. He preached to a captive audience, his little brother, Ralph. His mother told him he'd have to wait for God's calling but he continued to practice his sermons. As a teenager, he joined the church and actually begins to preach. Then things took a strange turn and he began to drink, smoke marijuana and cigarettes. Not too much later, he began trying cocaine, heroin, PCP, crack and whatever else he could get his hands on. He stole from his employers, wrote bad checks and conned his relatives which resulted in numerous arrests. In an attempt to turn his life around, he joined the Marines but continued his behavior of stealing, conning and drugging. The Marines sent him to the brig and eventually to Leavenworth. On many occasions, he attempted to get clean, get his marriage back on tract and keep a good job but each time he met with failure. At last, on one of his stints in prison, he met a preacher who had that certain "something" that he couldn't put his finger on and as a result Burton Barr, Jr. began to see the light.

THE HOODLUM PREACHER is the amazing story of one man's descent into the hell of the drug world and his ultimate redemption at the hands of God. The lessons he learned are good for all of us. Even if we aren't guilty of Burton's vices, we have all done something that is not right. Barr lets us know God can see good in us and we can be saved from ourselves. Barr does all this without being preachy or overbearing. It is a very good book and so very uplifting. I enjoyed every word, even as I cringed when Barr sank back into his abyss. It is well worth picking up.

While young people will not all become LeBron's, like him,they can work hard academically and athletically and parlay their education and athletic prowess--no matter the sport--into a successful career. It's true that most young athletes will not ever run up and down an NBA court, but they can coach on the sidelines in high school, college or someday in the semi-pro or pro ranks. They can become referees, statisticians, sports marketers, and sports writers. There are many ways they can turn their passion for the game into a rewarding livelihood. My hope in writing this book is to expose young minds to the limitlessly wonderful possibilities the future can hold.
