If readers haven't heard of Bill Arnett, the Atlanta art collector-dealer-patron whom Dietz reports on in this book, they'll certainly have an opinion about him by the time they close its covers. A self-made art expert who traveled the world and amassed a collection for himself, Arnett developed an interest in rural African-American folk art made by self-taught men such as Thornton Dial and Lonnie Holley, both from Alabama. In the late 1980s, Arnett offered these artists what they believed were staggering amounts of money for their work. But in the early 1990s, people began to wonder whether Arnett's deals weren't just another example of a rich, white art dealer taking advantage of poor, uneducated black artists. Arnett's deal with Dial drew, and continues to draw, particularly strong fire since Dial is illiterate, Arnett owns Dial's house and maintains complete control over the artist's dealings with the public. Dietz chronicles a number of episodes surrounding Arnett and his folk artists, including various museum shows and accompanying disagreements, leaving readers to make their own assessment of whether Arnett is a visionary champion of a new artistic frontier or simply a wealthy hoarder who thinks everyone's against him. Folk Art Gets Its Wings

Three years ago, through several seemingly chance events, Andrew Dietz was introduced to an assemblage sculpture of his late mother-in-law, Lenore Gold, in an out-of-the-way art warehouse owned by one of Atlanta's most provocative art dealers. Understanding the details behind the sculpture, how it came to involve his late mother-in-law, and how it came to reside in the warehouse on Atlanta's west side led Andrew down a rabbit hole of discovery. The deeper he went, the stranger the familiar and urbane environment of the art world seemed to become. THE LAST FOLK HERO represents the recounting of the strange tale Mr. Dietz discovered.

So what happens when visionary, yet non-credentialed, black artists from the rural south and their rich, (possibly rightfully so) paranoid white patron are thrown into the crucible of international politics, the national media, the 1996 Olympics, and the rarified high society of art dealers, critics, and tastemakers in Atlanta, Birmingham, Houston, Boston, New York, and Washington DC? The answer seems to be fortunes made and lost, accusations, prevarications, fornications, epithets regarding fornication (both commands and expression of surprise), the creation of art, and the relentless pursuit of truth and beauty. While the magnitude of the quality and influence of the art may still be debated, the debates and arguments are still being engaged in great, sometimes enormous, ways.

Personally, I do not profess fanatic appreciation for the arts. Generally, I like what appeals to my aesthetic senses (visual arts are decorations in my house), and when someone tells me that something is art I tend to use what many in the art world would describe as Philistine sensibilities to judge one way or the other. However, I do appreciate a good story, particularly when it involves themes of power, exploitation, and corruption, and most especially when it involves my hometown of Atlanta and the surrounding culture of the South. Once I started reading this story, I could hardly put it down. Since reading the book, I have scoured the internet looking for resources on Thornton Dial and Lonnie Holley, two of the books main artistic protagonists. I now plan to attend the Gee's Bend Quilters exhibition at the High at the end of March. I can honestly say that the book has opened up a whole new world for me, one that I gave little consideration to in the past.

In the end, THE LAST FOLK HERO compelled me to us ask what art and exploitation really are and to whom the beholden eyes belong that makes the final determination. This is not a story about good versus evil; rather, it's more like ambiguous intentions pitted against ambiguous intentions. Ultimately, we're left to wonder who the real heroes and villains are and if anyone could ever really tell the difference. Mr. Dietz does not attempt to provide any answers. He has left it open for a candid world to decide.

The sculpture of Mr. Dietz's late mother-in-law, an assemblage entitled "Finally Getting Wings Above the 41st Floor" by acclaimed folk artist Lonnie Holley, stands on a pedestal now in Atlanta's High Museum of Art.

A True-story page-turner!

A friend gave me an advance copy of this book and told me I wouldn't be able to put it down - he was right! Dietz is a terrific writer and he gives an insightful look behind the scenes of the art world. I am not an art student or collector, but I still found the book absolutely fascinating. Dietz draws compelling portraits of a completely unique cast of characters - and he does so fairly and even-handedly, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions about the wheelings and dealings. Finally, Dietz is simply a terrific story-teller. He pulls you in with the stories of the incredible struggles that the artists survived in their youth. But Dietz does not neglect the incredible humor is this story: imagine a few white art patrons, some African-American Folk Artisits (including some lovely lady quilters from an isolated small town that they pick up along the way), a camera crew and JANE FONDA, all on a bus tour on the back roads of Alabama! This actually happened, and Dietz tells the story in grand, good-humored fashion.

READ THIS BOOK! You won't be disappointed.

What a long strange trip it's been

"The Last Folk Hero" is a compelling read on a number of levels. It is a true life tale of the New South, the Art World, movie stars, rural African American folk artists and a maverick art collector careening across the southern states and colliding in Atlanta. The book details well known folk artists and how they came to the forefront of the art scene, as well as Bill Arnett, their collector/promoter/savior/satan. Was he just ahead of his time? Did he recognize the true value in their work? And was he trying to help them ...or himself?

It is an extremely well written book full of insight for a first time author that makes me look forward to his next work. If you enjoy reading about art, folk art, current Southern history, race relations, politics and fast deals: READ THIS BOOK!!! It is "A Man in Full" meets Howard Finster. This book would make a great Robert Altman movie with its full cast of characters. A great read and an important chronicle of the folk art movement in America.

Volume1,2,3....A nice set to study with...

This placemat was a great addition to my studies. I was able to use it in my cube at work (with volume 1), and in study at the end right before the test. It is color coordinated by knowledge area which was very helpful in understanding how everything fit together. On the back side was a lot of items that are very helpful to memorize for the exam. It also worked well with the volume 1 placemat as that showed the higher level of detail and how the processes worked together. The results speak for themselves.....169/200 PMP!

About the Author
Patrick Bosley is the youngest grandson of Pappy and Catherine Bosley. It was Pappy and Catherine who made the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn into a Kentucky Tradition from a 30 seat roadside stand back in 1963, to the 350 seat world famous restaurant before they passed away. Today, there are still three generations of Bosley's working together, everyday is an adventure. Patrick got his first education at Moonlite with his family before going off to the University of Colorado at Boulder where he got his second education, a BA in Anthropology, and his third education, at Western Kentucky University, a Masters in Psychology. Anthropology and Psychology don't seem to have much to do with running a restaurant and family business, but Patrick would tell you, it is about the people that makes it all come together. Patrick Bosley is the Third Generation to contribute to Moonlite's success, literally growing up working at the Moonlite, He still works there today with several other family members. When asked why Moonlite was so successful, he replied, "Good Food, Good Service....Treat your customers like friends and family...add a pinch of luck and a lot of family, mix 'em together and get out of the way. "

I am a real fan of Moonlight BBQ Sauce. Purchase it direct from the Business and keep it as standard stock in the pantry. Their cookbook has may classic recipes done in the Moonlight fashion. It was a nice addition to the cookbook collection.

Take That

TAKE THAT!

The scandalous conclusion to Ty's previous titles, Sinful Desires and With Friends Like That, has finally made its appearance on the literary scene. At the close of `With Friends Like That' readers were left in anticipation of more sex, lies, and drama. Well, I'm glad to say Ty remained true to her game!!! Of course Tricia and Tarik are back -this time working to repair their ruptured marriage. Simone and Kareem are now husband & wife with child, but marriage doesn't change old habits...Drama queen Shelly is still in the mix and she doesn't hesitate to up the ante - question is, will the new player she brings into the equation be as easy to manipulate as her former victims?

Ty Goode knows how to keep people reading her books. The elements she incorporates in her stories are true to life and shocking at the same time. I was pleased with the way the story flowed and complimented its predecessors. There were minor editing issues, though not enough to take away from the story. In order to avoid spoilers and for a better understanding of character interaction, the `trilogy' should be read in order. To save yourself the aggravation of not knowing what's going to happen next, I suggest getting all three at one time. You'll be happy you did. Great job Ty!

Conclusion

Fans will remember the venturesome characters from "Sinful Desires" and "With Friends Like That..." with fond memory. Yes they are still sinful and desirous and oh so shamless!

Tricia and Tarik, Simone and Kareem, Shelly and Melissa are all back. With issues such as Bi-sexual, to cheat or not to cheat, and one couple are not sure whether to be or not to be. To add to the mix there's a new character all caught up in the dilemma.

I always say Ty serves up drama with a capital D!!!! And she has not let me down with her third and final installment of her trilogy.

I had to take off one star for a couple of things, one being the editing, which I felt should have been on point like the story.

Blessed Assurance

Heavenly Creatures is a wonderful book for anyone who has ever lost a pet or wants to know if animals go to Heaven. The answer is YES you will see your friends again in Heaven.

I purchased Heavenly Creatures a few months after Casey our dog of 8yrs died of cancer, my husband and I were devestated, it felt like we had lost a daughter, we are both Christians and wanted scripture from the Bible reassuring us that we would see Casey again in Heaven. This book gave us the reassurance we were looking for. It begins with Genesis and continues through Revelation, it reveals through scripture God's plan and love for all his creation. Heavenly Creatures is beautifully written and Dee Ann's love for animals is evident in her book. It has helped us so much in our grief. We still miss Casey very much but we know we will see her again one day in Heaven and we look forward to that day.

I recommend this book to anyone grieving the loss of a pet, it will give you blessed assurance that you will be with them again in Heaven.

In the Preface part of Heavenly Creatures the Author Dee Ann's prayer is that her book will soothe grieving hearts and offer hope to all who miss, beyond measure, their loving companions. Dee Ann, your prayer has been answered for me and my husband. Thanks and God Bless You for a wonderful book.

Important message and exquisitely written.

Do animals go to Heaven? Read this book and find out!

The book has selected Biblical passages, (which are conveniently provided in the text), with logical discussion following each passage. Although scholarly, the book is not pedantic. On the contrary, it is written in a clear, conversational voice which will appeal to anyone from the 8th grade to 80 years old. This book is pure joy to read, if for no other reason then to see how a book should be written: the book is spare with its words while using impeccible logic to guide the reader to understand the relationships of God, mankind, and animals. Sprinkled throughout the book are wonderful short stories, poems, and lyrics; the story of Ivan Tergenieff haunts me in its poignancy. The Critter Hall of Fame is a chapter of witty, upbeat, short stories focusing on various animals with scriptural references; my favorite is Lazybones, (I have a new appreciation for ants). In the chapter, How Different Are We? the reader finds a concise list of the scriptural-based similarities between mankind and animals.

Do animals go to heaven? Read this book to understand why the answer is a resounding YES.

Richard Bernabe is a guru of light.

I am very biased because I took one of Richard's workshops. This man works his butt off to get the best photographs. It shows in his pictures and how he treats his students. Richard's composition is simply breath taking and he has helped me see the light. Even if you are not a photographer but love South Carolina this is a book to be proud of and a wonderful display piece in your home or office.

Cheers Richard on a wonderful book and thanks for teaching me your fabulous ways of capturing light.

Picked these up as Christmas gifts for in-laws that live in different parts of the world. Great way to give them a feel for our beautiful state and to picture us in our surroundings.

I saw this book in a book store but too costly for my budget. So I looked for it on Amazon! I not only found it but found a used version for next to nothing. I love it. The book is beautiful. It was gently used and now has a permanent spot on my coffee table for all to see.

About the Author

Frank Tozer has been fascinated by gardening, food plants and edible wild plants for as long as he can remember. He grew up in England, but moved to the United States as a young man and travelled extensively before settling down to grow plants, first in Connecticut and then in California and Washington. For a time he was an apprentice at the UCSC Farm and Garden in Santa Cruz, where he learned how to grow vegetables more methodically and abundantly. In many respects his journey closely parallels that of many earlier European settlers in America. He arrived with nothing, travelled overland across the country, settled in the Santa Cruz mountains, built a house (almost singlehandedly), carved a productive garden from the surrounding woods and raised a family. He has had many paying jobs over the years, as a gardener, carpenter, plumber, jeweler, solar installer, general contractor, farmer and writer. Tozer is the author of four books. The Uses Of Wild Plants, The New Food Garden, The New Vegetable Growers Handbook and The Organic Gardeners Handbook.

Useful Ideas, Could be Better

The overview of this book calls it "groundbreaking". I think that is overreaching a bit. Many of the ideas in this book will be familiar to anyone who has done a lot of reading on sustainable gardening, permaculture, biointensive gardening, edible landscaping, and forest gardening. That Mr. Tozer brings them altogether into a single book does make it a potentially useful encyclopedia of great ideas for transforming one's garden.

However, I can't help but wish he had gone a step further. At numerous points throughout the book, the author suggests a useful idea for the garden, but instead of giving the reader information about the idea, says that he has very little experience with that particular method or subject, and tells the reader they will need to go elsewhere for more information. This would perhaps be forgivable if Mr. Tozer referred the user to another book or resource, but he does not. I'm sort of baffled that the book contains no bibliography.

On top of this, as another reviewer has mentioned, the book contains myriad typos. When books are referenced within the text, the titles are not correctly punctuated to indicate that they are titles, and the books are not properly cited. This combined with the lack of references for more information on topics that are not adequately covered gives the reader an overall impression that not enough attention to detail was applied to the work. It reads like an excellent rough draft, but not a finished product.

I hope that Mr. Tozer is able to do another edition with adequate copy editing and the addition of bibliographic references. This could be a truly excellent book with those changes!

Awesome IDEA book for transforming your property ... and a fun read!

Whether your home place is a few hundred square feet or a few acres, you'll find ideas here for making your property beautiful, comfortable, AND food productive, possibly even income productive.

Most projects are things you can do yourself, and your will find directions with drawings for many with suggested reference sources / where to get help on the rest. He discusses the uses of fruit and nut trees and bushes and even groundcovers, using trees to produce fencing and craft materials, the myriad options in fencing, basic soil development and site evaluation, solving drainage problems, capturing and using rain water and grey water, arbors and shade areas for outdoor living, and incorporating alternative fruits, vegetables, teas, and herbs in your permanent landscape.

Especially useful to me were directions on how to reclaim ground from pernicious, perenniel weeds and USE IT THAT FIRST SUMMER, using entirely FREE recycled materials.

Definitely the most mind-liberating, time saving book I've ever found on the subject of whole-property use.

About the fun read: the author was born in England, and arrived in America well grounded in centuries-old practical, economical uses of one's own bit of ground - nostalgic charm in these nuggets of information; He has since added decades of experience gardening in multiple US climate zones, a strong interest in botanical diversity and use of well adapted plants (including natives), and a serious committment to sound ecology and water preservation. This makes the book very up to date and practical. However, he also writes with that dry English wit that has had me laughing out loud many times.

Good overview of what can be accomplished on a small piece of land

In spite of the many typographical errors this is a good companion to the others other books and completes the picture of a total gardening system
