This is a book every church person should read ...

Crushed is a book about pastors of American churches in this generation. It is filled with stunning statistics and heart wrenching stories. The author is a seasoned veteran of pastoral ministry for three decades and is now the founder/president of a ministry to people in ministry called, Encouragement Dynamics.

The prime directive of Encouragement Dynamics comes from the heart of a pastor and his wife who love other pastors and their wives now laboring in God's harvest. Gary and Georgia Pinion have dedicated themselves to care for the shepherds and their families of today's churches.

The heart of the book is wrapped around the experiences of pastors interviewed by the author who have been "crushed" by cruel circumstances and unrealized expectations. Citing from no less than three dozen published sources and from numerous personal accounts derived from correspondence, Dr. Pinion takes the reader into a quiet corner of silent sorrows and private pain. It is no wonder that he has picked up the cause to expose the crisis and encourage the survivors. It is not an easy journey to serve with a calling from on high but most are unaware of the losses incurred in the pastoral ministry until books like this confront those issues.

Descriptive, Not Prescriptive

As a pastor for over 20 years, I could relate to almost everything the author was sharing. The problem was that it sounded more like a journal of complaints or warnings for those who might dare enter ministry than a book designed to help "crushed" ministers. It's a great book if you want to have your "crushed" feelings validated, but it's not so great if you are looking for practical help out. I kept thinking, "Yes, you're right! Now give me some suggestions as to how I can deal with being so "crushed." It never happened.

Dona Vitale has been an independent qualitative research consultant since 1987 when she established Strategic Focus Inc in Chicago. About the Author
DeWayne McCulley is an ex-diabetic engineer who survived a near-death, coma experience with a blood glucose level of 1337 -- more than 1200 points above normal. Despite hyperglycemia, dehydration, two blood clots, high cholesterol, pneumonia and four insulin shots a day, DeWayne was able to use his 30 years of experience in Corporate America (engineering and biochemistry) to methodically and completely wean himself off the insulin, Coumadin and other drugs to lower his average glucose level to 92.5 and his hemoglobin A1C to 4.5% -- reversing his diabetes, losing over 52 pounds, and requiring no drugs of any kind in less than 6 months. He credits his recovery to God, his doctors and nurses, his mother, his daughter Cynthia, a set of unexplained accidents (blessings), and his engineering background. Reversed My Type 2 over 3 years ago, This book was the best!

Thanksgiving 2007 a family member tested my blood sugar. My number was 417. I immediately bought a meter, started reading everything I could find on the subject, and purchased a dozen books on diabetes. I also bought an enormous supply of test strips from eBay (about 2000 strips - I still have a some that I still use from that purchase).

I also scheduled an appointment for blood tests and ended up clashing with my Dr who wanted me to take drugs immediately while unable to answer my scientific questions to my own satisfaction (I'm a Systems Engineer like the author of this book). I did get my blood test results - fine. Though my A1C was 10.7 and I got a few letters saying I would die if I didn't start taking the medication. But by then I was already improving via some of my own testing and early results of dietary improvement.

As my reading progressed and this book arrived - it was FAR BETTER than ALL the rest. It immediatly provided a food-chart that provided sound guidance. Also the approach of the author resonated with my own approach.

I used an Atkins-like diet for 3 months and my blood suggar reduced to below 150 within 3 months. By then I also knew what foods caused challenges. But I was also consuming over 5000 calories / day and was 220 lbs (lost 20 lbs during that 3 months too - even with 5000 calories/day).

Then I went further following the dietary guidance of this book for nutritian - while testing results, and looking up the calories of anything I considered eating. There were some big surprises - like OJ is suggary, etc. My "calories awareness" implementation of DeWayne McCulty's book - was a gradual reduction choice by choice. That worked too. Within another 6 months I had lost 60 lbs.

Now its 3 years later - I do eat carbs and stuff like that now that I'm fully recovered. I back to a VERY NORMAL though HEALTHY diet. I am aware of calories and intentionally aim for about 2500/day - to keep my weight at 170 lbs - and also pay attention to nutrition - so that I don't make the 2500/day all bad stuff.

I have gone lower than 170 (at 5'8") which isn't as healthy feeling because then I'm not as comfortable with skipping meals (experienced that sense at 160 lbs).

All that said, the author of this book ENGINEERED his way to perfect health - and following my own approach which I based upon his I've also been successful. Its been 3 years.

My blood pressure also became normal - and that was from the weigh loss and better nutrition (it averaged 154/91 before, and 115/70 now).

I noticed there are a few more products from this author now then there were 3 years ago... I especially liked the live/dead foods chart which I taped on the inside of one of the kitchen cabinets.

My blood-sugar now averages 100, and my BP 115/70. I feel fit and I sincerely thank you DeWayne McCulley (Systems Engineer!).

This plan really works and I wish that I could give six stars!

Death to Diabetes is one of those books that can help you whether you have diabetes or not. It is filled with information about nutrition and how various foods, vitamins, and minerals affect the way that your body works. The meal plan is a good one. Basically, it is an anti-inflammatory eating plan. DeWayne McCulley has invested a lot of time into finding research and data to support the ideas that he puts forth in his book. I will be honest with you, I didn't believe that it would work. I actually made fun of the commercials. Then, a man in a forum that I visit said that his wife put him on the eating plan. He lost weight and in less than two months had cut his diabetes medication in half. I was intrigued and tried the plan. It worked. I felt better, and I lost weight. My joints didn't hurt as much. When I went to the doctor for my annual blood work, I had better results than I had in years! It was amazing! I bought this book in both paperback and KIndle formats. That is how much I like it. I highly recommend it to people with diabetes and folks who just want to help their body work better. It is a winner!

Off my medication and Blood Sugar under control!

I purchased this book because I wasn't going to live with Diabetes Type 2 for the rest of my life. I was diagnosed in January of 2008 and had no idea what to do as far as treatment. My doctor said "you have type 2 diabetes... take these pills twice a day and I'll see you in 6 months." For a whole year I took the pills, didn't really make any diet modifications and one year later I was really no better although I didn't feel "sick." I was still fatigued, hadn't lost weight (I was only 197 lbs and 6' when diagnosed)and wondering what this silent killer was doing prompted me to do something.

In April of 2009 I purchased Death to Diabetes and devoured it. I knew from what I read about the author that if he could make those kinds of changes he did and in effect heal himself, then so could I. I would be the first to agree with anyone that some or all of the things he recommends that you have to leave behind in order to change and get well could be very difficult to do. I knew that staying the path of medications and eating incorrectly wasn't going to do it for me. Someone else wrote a review of the book and mentioned the 5 death foods and the 5 live foods the author talks about in the book. If you pay attention to anything it is that section and making sure you have 3-4 good accurate readings per day on your glucometer (he tells you how). Only then when the changes occur, will you be able to see and record the differences.

I began my radical lifestyle change based solely on this book on April 8th. That day my 9am blood sugar was 253, at 11am 2 hours after eating it was 235 and at 8pm, 2 hours after eating it was 180. On that day anything with sugar or anything that could convert to bad sugar I eliminated. All white flour and anything containing white flour I eliminated. All saturated fats went with it and any alcohol also. No soda, no pizza, no pasta, no deep fried, no read meat, no take out....I wasn't going to let society and their television ads dictate how I was going to eat. And I began an exercise program that included walking 3-5 miles a day. Armed with this book, I knew I could make the changes with help from a guy who made total sense with every word I read.

On May 19th, I went in for another follow-up check-up. Based on my blood sugar records I took daily which had now dropped to the 75-136 range coupled with my estimated average glucose (eAG) test that indicated my blood sugar went from 151 to 130 I was now seeing changes. In addition, my cholesterol went from 194 to 157 and my triglyceride level went from 105 to 58. I was taken off all medication by my doctor and have now really loved to enjoy the foods that are good for you. Without this book, it would never have happened. I needed a road map and this was perfect! It all just made perfect sense.

I might also add that when I read the verse that DeWayne referenced in the book: Hosea 4:6 "My people perish for lack of knowledge." I agree. Buy the book, get the knowledge and make a change. This is the only disease out there that you alone can alter the course of.

Loved the horsey talk, hated the characters

Jerico Brandeis is a Grand Prix level rider who has set his sights on quaifying for the Olympic team and running his training/showing business. He is a cocky, and arrogant personality who has loads of psychoanalyisis to get through. He also has some serious difficulties with women and definitely waffles between viewing them as objects to falling desperately head over heals in love with them. While I agree that this is very stereotypical of trainers in this industry, that's just it... it's a stereotype.
Of course such a self involved individual needs a roommate; welcome Starbucks; this is a character that I think is supposed to be a foil/comedic relief for the story. I hate this guy; he is a former Starbucks employee/ photographer who has the brain of a pea and the looks of a male model. Come on!
Now we get to the conflict. Much of the drama in this book arises from him crossing over professional lines; as in having an affair with his main patron's wife, oh, and getting caught at it, then doing it again and getting her pregnant when the spouse is STERILE (DUH!). This book was pure soap opera drama in the human relations department with a little porn thrown in for flavoring.
The only redeeming value in this book is the depiction of the horses, the jumping and the actual mechanics of the show jumping industry (which was still a bit stereotypical) In terms of the descriptions of the riding and show jumping component, I felt that the book did a good job in giving us a glimpse into that world. Jericho's career was sped up a bit for the sake of the plot line, but you do get a good idea of how hard it is to make it in that world.

This is a wonderful book esp. if you are a educated jumper rider. I can't even put it down and have recommended it to many of my other horse friends. The story line and details are right on... it sounds like it is written by someone who has "been there and done that" in Wellington and on the nitty gritty jumper circuit as well as climbing to the top in the horse competition world. I can't wait for another book written by Barbara Moss regarding any story line on the competitive horse world with its background in Wellington and Europe.

Could NOT put this book down..

Yes, there's lots of explicit sex. Yes, the clipped writing style of the author bothered me at first but the storyline held me spellbound until the very end. The last few pages will bring a smile to the face of anyone who has been around horses for any length of time. The author knows horses and their way of thinking. The hero is arrogant, compelling, flawed, sensual and believably talented. I loved this book in that I couldn't put it down but hated to finish it. I cannot wait for the next although hopefully the proofreading will be better next time. Hurry up Barbara, I'm waiting.

Phil Comeau, film director and writer, was born in Baie Sainte-Marie, Nova Scotia, and lives in Montreal. Comeau studied dramatic arts at the Université de Moncton in New Brunswick, and cinema in Paris, France. He has directed over 100 dramas, documentary films, and television episodes, of which one third concern Acadians.

About the Author

Warren A. Perrin, lawyer and author, was born near Erath and lives in Layette, Louisiana. He holds a J.D. degree from Louisiana State University School of Law and is a practicing attorney. He is the author of six books dealing with French culture, including Acadian Redemption (2004), the first biography of an Acadian exile.

This book really opened my eyes as to the extent of the dispersal of the Acadian peoples around the world. It also gave me new insight as to the causes of the original expulsion of the Acadians from Acadie (now in Canada) in 1755. The movement in the last half a century to unite Acadians around the world and efforts to promote the French language and the Acadian culture is examined. Articles (some originally in French and the book is also available in French) from over 60 different people in different Acadian areas of settlement and from different prospectives around the world give new insight as to development and preservation of the Acadian cultural heritage and its future prospects.

Porcellino's graphic novel about his last year in high school, Perfect Example (1999), will be reissued in style this fall by high-toned graphic-novel publisher Drawn & Quarterly. Expect much the same for this micropress effort about some of Porcellino's subsequent life. But don't wait. Porcellino's autobiographical comics rank with the best because of their unpretentiousness and candor. In a prose introduction, Porcellino says that he and his childhood pals thought the "mosquito men" they saw in suburban Illinois "got paid to do what we did for fun." At 20, he became one and for several years in Illinois and then Colorado hunted larvae, sprayed insecticide, and eventually changed his mind about the job. The 1- to 20-page pieces in Diary range formally from a list of "Inhuman Bastards of the Deep" (microfauna in a drop of water) to an essay on a typical workday ("Mountain Song") to conventional narratives. Porcellino's usual Matt Groening-simple drawing style becomes denser according to affect as much as subject (see the piece on spraying at night); it's always perfectly pitched. Ray Olson

Poetry in the form of comics

If you haven't gotten around to John Porcellino's monolithic King Cat Classix, Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man is a condensed version of his best work. It's a bizarre slice of midwestern American life: comics dealing with Porcellino's experience doing just what it sounds like ... pouring chemicals into swamps/waterholes containing mosquito larvae. It begins with his strange encounters with hitchhikers, in twister-torn country, Con Edison structures, getting attacked by wasps, and continues with why he gives up mosquito-abating. The evolution of Porcellino's artwork is also fascinating, starting with scrawled, almost crude, "punk" drawings and evolving to a gorgeous, minimal, clear-line style. Porcellino's landscapes are something to behold in their haikulike simplicity and beauty.

The comic is funny, but also touching, pensive and absolutely in love with nature. The writing evokes Hemingway and Kerouac, and I highly recommend this book and his other work to people interested in finding beauty in humble things, the blue-collar American experience, poetry, nature.

Mosquitoes and conversions.

John Porcellino, Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man (La Mano, 2005)

Over the past few years, Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man had become something of a graphic novel holy grail for me; library after library had listed it in their catalogs (presumably having it on order rather than in stock), and then had it mysteriously disappear. Finding a copy was downright impossible, and the book sat at the top of my list of stuff I wanted to read for over three years before Interlibrary Loan were finally able to track down what I'm starting to think is the only extant copy of the book in existence. (For the record, I extend my undying gratitude to the folks at the Salt Lake City Public Library.) I knew, somewhere in the back of my head, I was probably setting myself up for disaster; when you look forward to something for this absurd amount of time, the reality almost never matches the anticipation. And yet Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man almost did. Almost. I knew I was going to be in trouble when I read the preface, though, so I was prepared when I got to the last pages and Porcellino's conversion (not a spoiler, since, obviously, it's mentioned in the preface). Still, I found myself liking the earlier stuff better, despite it being far more primitive and crude (in every sense of the word) than the later work. But my problems with the later work are all philosophical, rather than with the work itself; don't let my reservation stop you from seeking this one out. ***
