These flashcards are a great size. I split them into the process groups, pulled out the items I needed to study the most. They fit into my bag easily. When I had a minute I could pull them out, mix them up for review with out memorizing the next card. I would recommend them. I passed my exam on the first try.

Sex+the mind+intellectual gravity= hilarity

Think--if you can--of Charles Bukowski crossed with Harold Bloom, with a dollop of Sartre thrown in. That's Erotomania. Though it drips with explicit sexual detail, it is not pornographic. It is rather a serious if hilarious investigation of ways we keep from becoming close--and how we might ultimately learn to find love. Searching for a perfect f**k may sound banal in today's world, but in Levy's hands it often becomes transcendent. When his heroine can only achieve arousal in front of abstract expressionist paintings the book also becomes a way to explore the complexity of our relationship to art. I'm not joking, though in many ways Levy is. This is a funny book. At other times sex is only satisfying when the Chinese food delivery man is watching. But no matter. For Levy, art, literature, and the mind matter above all, despite appearances to the contrary. In the midst of an account of a sexual marathon he may recall Flaubert, eloquently. Perhaps the book ought best be seen as a psychoanalytic examination of a mind that reflexively dwells on sex but is actually obsessed by intellectual fulfillment and human connectedness. It is a weird and unexpected combination, but it works. And after all, isn't our modern culture obsessed with sex above all? Among the most original novels I have ever read.

A Great Erotic Comedy

Erotomania is a Portnoy's Complaint for the 00's!
I laughed out loud more than once reading about the erotic philosophizing and acting out of Francis Levy's protagonists. The climax, in which the two leads end up barfing on each other is too much to be believed, but somehow is convincingly portrayed.
The book is a quick read and gives one thought on what is important in life.
I recommend it.

Very strange but somehow compelling

I can only imagine the spam I'm going to get from this review, but here goes. This is not a family-friendly book, so please, make sure the kids are away from the screen!

The basic summary of the book is that two people, who are the perfect sexual match for each other, meet randomly and start doing it. All they're interested in is having sex - the male main character, Jim, often can't even remember what this woman looks like and certainly doesn't know her name. Nor does he seem to care for a while, all he wants is more. As time goes on, he realizes that this is unhealthy and he seeks to know her name, her face, and eventually she kicks her boyfriend out and they move in together, attempting to form a relationship. The relationship is similarly unhealthy, and they go to see a counselor. Meanwhile, they begin to develop other interests, like television, food, and exercise, in the end becoming what appears to be a parody of a modern couple - one is overweight, the other exercises constantly, and they both are obsessed with television.

The idea behind Erotomania is tracking a couple through development. They begin as "animals". After all, the purpose of an animal's life is to stay alive and procreate. They eat takeout almost exclusively, because animals don't cook and forage for food. When they learn each other's names and move in together, they've transcended the animal phase, but they still mainly eat takeout and attempt procreation. Luckily, no children ever result from this union. Then the book starts in on the stereotypes as they become more "human". They go to a therapist who is obsessed with his own diagnoses and pays little attention to their actual problems. They discover microwave cooking when Jim's best gay friend, a chef, leaves them to find their own food. They discover television, which quickly consumes their leisure time. They even discover art, albeit in a way I'd never have expected.

The strangest part, perhaps, is that buried in all the sex and stereotypes, I could actually tell that the couple loved each other by the end. The book's subtitle is "a romance" and Erotomania pulls it off. I never expected it to. It's a completely different approach and utterly unlike anything I've ever read before. In all honesty, I was definitely bothered by the frequent swear words and the sex that pervades the entire book - it's not my choice of reading material. I'm still glad I did, though, as it certainly expanded my horizons. There's no denying that it's interesting, and for someone who is interested in experimental literature, I'd recommend it.

Nice, but there's nothing in this worth 45 dollars...

There's no way I'm paying $45 for this. It's barely 1/2" thick and the content is very sparse to say the least.

If you've seen "Getting Started with Arduino" ($8) then you've already got the basics and this book doesn't add much more.

It's worth $15 at most - I sent it back.

TWO STARS BECAUSE IT'S WAY OVERPRICED!!!!

Overpriced for what you get

While the content of this book is good, there simply is not enough of it for the price. I was through it in a couple of hours. Compared to the other Arduino books on the market this one is overpriced.

The Perfect Arduino Book

I recommend Joe Pardue's book, "An Arduino Workshop" as the perfect Arduino book for the novice yet challenging for the more experienced.

The author defines new terms as they are presented to keep readers abreast of the subject matter. The progression of the subject matter moves smoothly from simple concepts to the more complex. There is even a short discussion of voltage, current, resistance and Ohm's law.

His illustrations are very clear and schematic diagrams are backed-up with pictorial diagrams so that those who are unfamiliar with schematics can easily complete the many hardware /software experiments.

The experiments are not just limited to blinking LED's. There are experiments to do that but the author adds a DIP switch that the Arduino reads to change the pattern, speed and polarity of the blinking LED's

Many of the experiments are quite sophisticated dealing with pulse width modulation, motor speed control with feedback, analog-to-digital conversion and using the serial port on the Arduino to communicate with your PC.

Some of the software programs are quite long. However, the author had the good sense to put these programs on his web site so you don't have to type in these long programs.

The author's down home, folksy style and sense of humor will help you to get through some of the more mundane subjects and maybe make you giggle a little too.

Overall, this is a excellent book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the Arduino platform.

AIPAC Exposed

Grant Smith's book traces the secret history of the American Israel Political Affairs Committee (AIPAC). AIPAC is an organization little known or understood outside of the Washington Beltway and those who follow American Middle East policy. However, its relative obscurity in the Heartland should not fool the public. AIPAC has evolved into one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in the United States. Politicians, regardless of political stripe, play homage to AIPAC. Indeed, critical pieces of legislation regarding US policies towards Israel and the Middle East are drafted in AIPAC's downtown Washington offices. While most lobby organizations represent genuine American commercial or social interests, Smith makes a compelling case that AIPAC is a functional extension of the Israeli government. The recent espionage case involving two AIPAC officials is a striking example of AIPAC's highly conflicted agenda (fully documented in Smith's book). It would be more accurate for AIPAC to rename itself the "Israeli Political Action Committee" to better disclose the efforts it makes to sway elections in virtually every US congressional district. This book shows how AIPAC, a nonprofit corporation prohibited from supporting political candidates, does just that in clandestine and illegal ways. Portions of Smith's book read like a criminal indictment. It is filled with compelling and fully sourced facts and figures. He makes a strong case that AIPAC is indeed an organization that deserves far greater legal oversight and accountability than it has received thus far. Moreover the mainstream media now ignores AIPAC's alleged criminal activities and destructive political influence on our democratic process. This is appalling, but was not always the case. The mainstream corporate media's evolution from dogged investigators to AIPAC lap dogs is documented in the book, along with a stunning confession from the Washington Post's former Middle East Bureau Chief.

No doubt Smith will receive the usual bludgeoning from the lobby. This is now par for the course. Whenever an American criticizes Israeli policy or that country's illicit influence over US political affairs, the predictable "Israel First" hacks make their way to the front of the line to smear and instill fear. We have seen this happen to Professors Walt and Mearsheimer, Norman Finkelstein, James Petras, President Jimmy Carter and of course Congressman Paul Findley who first dared to speak out. Mr. Smith has joined a group of dedicated, patriotic Americans whose sole interests continue to be the advancement of more rational US strategic objectives that are truly in the interest of all Americans. Kudos to Mr. Smith!

Israel: America's puppet master.

I just finished this ground breaking work--not ground breaking because of new, long hidden material but because the material has not been examined because of fear. Smith has probed subjects that have rarely, if ever, been brought to light. These subjects have remained in the shadows because the Israeli government and its lobby do not want its relationship with its cash cow, America, to be spotlighted for fear that the spiggot will be turned off and the estimated 1.8 trillion in support for Israel will be lessened. This figure is quoted by Smith in chapter five and sourced from Harvard economist Thomas Stauffer and although Smith's thesis is more tightly formulated, the bigger picture inarguably materializes; that picture is of huge import for America and by extension people like myself living far away from this centre of such great international interest.

Smith's book painted a conclusive, at least for me, picture of the terrible puppet lines that make it all but impossible for American government to function as it is constitutionally suppossed to operate. As he writes in chapter three, American democracy cannot act when lobbyists can exercise overwhelming influence on sigle-issue legislation under consideration. As Smith points out in chater one, J William Fulbright was the last major American politician to challenge the Israeli Lobby and that was nearly forty years ago.

I found Smith's book hard going for a intellectual lightweight like myself because he peppers his work with many excerpts from legal writings of one kind or another. This comment is not to dissuade any potential reader, it is meant only as a caution regarding the nature of the writing to be faced. The legal material is there to provide hard evidence for virtually all of Smith's statements. He has sown the seeds of his ideas carefully and provided ample fertilizer in the form of documented evidence to insure a good crop; it is certainly evidence strong enough for this reader.

AIPCA Exposed

Grant Smith's book traces the history of the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC). AIPAC is a little known and understood organization outside of the Washington Beltway and those that follow American Middle East policy. However, its relative obscurity in the Heartland should not fool the public. AIPAC has evolved into one of the most powerful lobby organizations in the United States. Politicians, regardless of political stripe, play homage to AIPAC. Indeed, entire pieces of legislation regarding US policies towards Israel and the Middle East have been drafted in AIPAC's downtown Washington offices. While most lobby organization represent genuine American commercial and social interests, Smith makes a compelling case that AIPAC is in fact a functional extension of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. The recent espionage case involving AIPAC officials is a striking example of AIPAC's conflicted agenda (fully documented in Smith's book). I would rather AIPAC rename itself the "Israeli Political Action Committee"- a more honest nomenclature.

We have seen this happen to Professors Walt, Miershiemer, Finkelstein, Petras, President Jimmy Carter and Congressman Findley, among others. Mr. Smith can be comforted that he has joined a group of dedicated, patriotic Americans whose sole interests continue to be the advancement of US strategic objectives and who have resisted prostituting themselves for foreign powers. Kudos to Mr. Smith!

It's About Time!

I remember the year, if not the month and day, when I became hopelessly hooked on "trash cinema". It was sometime during the Summer of 1986 when, out of boredom, I decided to watch "Spawn of the Slithis" on the "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" midnight movie show. I couldn't believe what I was seeing!! How could I have been missing out on this great stuff for so many years?

Since then I've made it my mission in life to watch as many of these "underground" classics as possible, i.e., without getting divorced; everything from silly TROMA splatterfests to "subversive" spaghetti westerns. Naturally, this gives me a licence to bore my friends and co-workers with my latest discoveries (every week), but they tolerate me pretty well.

I've always had a tough time, however, deciding what to rent or buy next; and those masive paperback video guides by Leonard Maltin and Roger Ebert were of limited use to a geeky, twisted son-of-a-bitch like me. I've relied mostly upon the kindness and patience of video store owners and passing strangers.

But now, here it is! In addition to being a former video store owner, Scott Phillips is a sucessful screenwriter and director ("Drive", "The Stink of Flesh", "Science Bastard") who is eminently qualified to dish the dirt on trashy gems such as "Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park" and "Shriek of the Mutilated"; two of my all-time favorites. His cinematic knowledge is STAGGERING, and all of his reviews are funny as Hell, and often heartwarming to boot. For the most part, he concentrates on "overlooked" classics of the 1960's through 1990's, but his takes on selected mainstream oddities like "Porkys" and "Xanadu" are howlingly funny! His love of the art form and the moviemaking process shines through on every page.

This could not have come at a better time for me! At my (middle) age, I was beginning to think that I'm a "lost cause" because I remember kooky characters like Bert Convy (that swingin' hepcat), or that I'm the only guy my age who has a crush on Fairuza Balk. Now I feel better!

This book should be required reading for all film students. Please, Mr. Phillips, keep it up - we want more!

Hilarious Insider's Compilation

It almost doesn't matter what this book is about because the writing is just so fun to read. Scott Phillips is a low-budget filmmaker reviewing other people's low-budget films, so you really get an insider's perspective from someone who has seen a LOT of movies. This would make a great stocking stuffer for anti-Hallmark Chrismakkah friends and loved ones. I would prefer to give it 13 stars but 5's as high as they go.

This book of video and movie reviews covers some classic and some long-forgotten so-trashy-they're-awesome flicks. I had heard of a lot of them, but there are many more that, after reading about them, I'm definitely going to have to find somewhere! Even the reviews of the mainstream movies are pretty hilarious.

A little too much seafood

This is a nice cookbook, but more for looks than for novice to close to chef status.....very hard and long recipes. The food looks great, but coming from the restaurants and with the list of restaurants, you may as well just fly there and visit the place and eat at them, than try to cook them.
