I work with a number of non-profit boards. This book has helped our governance improve. We especially liked the jurisdiction agreements which help guide committees to know the responsibilities of the committee and when they can act, report to the. Board or ask permission of the board. Many great easy to understand solutions!

About the Author
Thomas J. Hixon, Ph.D., CCC-SLP (1940-2009) received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and did postdoctoral work in physiology at Harvard University. He was Professor Emeritus of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Dean Emeritus of the Graduate College at the University of Arizona and had been Head of the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, Director of the National Center for Neurogenic Communication Disorders, Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs, Director of the Movement Neuroscience Program, Research Integrity Officer, and Associate Vice President for Research at the same institution. Dr. Hixon was a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and was awarded Honors of the Association, the Council of Editor's Award, two Journal Editor's Awards from the Association for the outstanding article of the year, and a Career Teaching Award from the University of Arizona. Dr. Hixon served as Editor of the Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, Speech Section Editor of the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, and an editorial reviewer and/or Associate Editor to over a dozen other speech and voice journals. His research interests centered on normal and abnormal speech production and the biomechanics of singing.

A "must-have" for vocalists and vocal teachers everywhere

Author Thomas J. Hixon puts his more than 40 years of experience in singing and acting to the page in Respiratory Function In Singing: A Primer for Singers And Singing Teachers. Respiratory Function In Singing details precisely how to coordinate posture, muscular training, breathing techniques, and much more to optimize one's vocal talents. Of especial note are the popular myths of respiratory function in singing that Hixon denounces, such as the all-too-common suggestion to "breathe like a newborn" (newborns breathe lying down, which is fundamentally different from breathing while standing). Black-and-white diagrams and charts, sample breathing and singing exercises, and singularly valuable advice for singers of all experience levels from novice to professional make Respiratory Function In Singing a "must-have" for vocalists and vocal teachers everywhere.

The objectivity needed to provide a singer with a solid foundation.

Upon opening this book it is immediately obvious the writer will be dealing with warm observations,as distinct from esoteric feelings. This is not to say he presents his information as complete and final. He'd have been the first to admit there is always something remaining to be discovered.

All singers need to know why they do one thing and not another, this is something we have learned from our first tentative footsteps so why should it be discarded when singing in favor of a mystical concept. T J Hixon provides for the intelligent reader, a clear description of the operation of relevant muscles without getting bogged down in excessive detail. There ARE contentious sections that for me simply stimulate more investigation and doubtless that is the way Mr Hixon would have wished it.

One of the great quandaries for such writers is whether to scorn certain quaint singing concepts or whether to take all steps imaginable to consider the feeling of those so misled, thus dodging the duty of providing firm guidance. Mr Hixon does not dodge this duty. Unless such emphasis is provided, I believe some may stumble along fearing to question their teacher's peculiar assertions. The information in this book does not stand in isolation of the observations of the intelligent singer, in fact it provides direct guidance and confirmation of why for the individual singer, some things work and others don't.

But is the diaphragm active right through the exhalation, or is it not? T J Hixon simply presents the observation he has encountered.

I now think Lloyd H is right, and it is through using this book in combination with singing experimentation suggested by Lloyd that one may discover the interaction between the established rib cage and the diaphragm. It is the group reaction that moderates chest-cage establishment, resulting in the ability of the diaphragm to remain active beyond its initial act of inhalation. It is this load sharing or cooperation that moderates the whole process of singing and enables the artist to attend to vowel and legato.

Well done, Thomas J Hixon your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Great text from Hixon, as usual. It is more suited for singers or non-medical professionals. Experienced speech-language pathologists working with professional voice users will find this too introductory, however I still find it useful to give to my clients to read.

Garden of delight

We Grew It--Let's Eat It! is lovingly and carefully made--even down to its printing. Tenley Circle Press used a printing company in their community that is Forest Stewardship Council-certified.

As I read this colorful book for the first time, I wanted to read it both slowly and quickly. Quickly, because the text is funny and engaging. Slowly because Becky Lettenberger's photographs of the garden and the twins are glorious. This back-and-forth, slowly-quickly feeling reminds me of the mindset that gardens provide. There's lots to do (to paraphrase one of the chapter titles), so you want to work quickly, but gardens smell, look, taste, and even sound so interesting that planting inspires contemplation and quiet gratitude. A garden is a buffet, a classroom, and a bonding place. This book is too.

A delightful and practical book

"We Grew It - Let's Eat It" is a fabulous book for 4-9 year olds about planting, growing, harvesting and eating. My 4 1/2 year old loves it. He's just getting interested in gardening and this book is a lovely way to introduce him to the steps needed to get food on the table. He also loves to cook and the book has several recipes that we are looking forward to making together.

The book is also marvelous for the parent, teacher, caregivers who read it. We all have something to learn from it.

I highly recommend this book for young gardeners and their families.

"We Grew It, Let's Eat It" has quickly become my 4 1/2-year-old daughter's favorite story. She is captivated by Annie and Veda's adventure and can't wait to get out to plant her own garden. My 7-year-old has been getting excited about a similar project at her school, and this book is adding inspiration!

Both memoirs were written while the authors were still in hiding, unsure if they would succeed in evading the Nazis. Srul Cymlich's memoir is one of a handful of Jewish accounts of the Treblinka I forced labor camp. It provides a rare insight into the brutal daily life he and other inmates endured. Srul escaped in April 1943, just before he was due to be transferred to and murdered in the Treblinka II extermination camp. Oskar Stawczynski's memoir is one of the earliest written eyewitness accounts of the August 2, 1943 uprising in Treblinka. Strawczynski tells of Jewish camp officials' cruel treatment of their fellow Jewish prisoners; the viciousness of the German staff; preparations for the uprising, and life after the mass escape of the camp. Both men owed their survival and the opportunity to write their stories to their own daring and initiative as well as to the assistance they received from a variety of people, including Polish rescuers. Each wrote in order to tell his tale to the world and to his surviving family members, but at the time of writing neither author knew if he would survive,or if his account would ever be read by anyone.

Insights into "Life" Inside Treblinka (1) and (2)

Cymlich's account begins with the German-Soviet conquest of Poland in 1939. He witnessed an aerial dogfight between German and Polish planes (p. 6), adding refutation to the perennial myth of the Polish Air Force getting destroyed on the ground on the first day of the war.

Compared with other accounts of Jews who survived Treblinka, this one emphasizes the interpersonal relationships there. It also gives details about Treblinka (1), the labor camp situated about two km from Treblinka (2), the extermination camp. It turns out that there were more Jews relative to Poles incarcerated in Treblinka (1), and more contact between the two sub-camps, proceeding in both directions, than previously described. (p. 36)

Cymlich notes the cruelties of both the Polish and Jewish kapos in Treblinka (1), but believes that the Jewish kapos were worse than the Polish ones, and worse than the German and Ukrainian guards. (p. 38) In Treblinka (2), there was a group of Jewish collaborators called "Reds", as described by Strawczynski. (pp. 131-132) Among other deeds, they deceived incoming Jews as to the purpose of their arrivals, facilitating their procession into the "showers". (pp. 140-141) As for those Jews who arrived at Treblinka (2) and who weren't immediately gassed upon arrival, they had to contend with eager Jewish informers such as Kuba and Chaskiel in their everyday battle for survival and possible eventual escape. (p. 149, 152-153)

The deaths of Jews who had successfully escaped Treblinka were caused not only by betrayers, but also by fugitive Jews who turned themselves in to the Germans. (p. 43) Unlike Jan T. Gross and his fans, who pooh-pooh the German-imposed death penalty for the slightest aid to Jews, Cymlich does not. (p. 43) Nevertheless, Treblinka escapees were aided by Poles. The Polish Kobos family aided Cymlich (p. 66), and the Roguszewski family aided Strawczynski (p. 188). Both were nominated as Righteous Gentiles at Yad Vashem.

The modern practice of de-Germanizing the Nazis was totally foreign to Cymlich's thinking: "The souls of the innocent, murdered victims cannot go to heaven. They keep wandering through the camps, around the graves scattered throughout Poland, awaiting retribution for this bloody and well-organized crime. Only the bestial desire to destroy and torment the uninvolved, the desire that is in the blood of most Germans, could conceive the realization of this Satanic plan with such deadly precision." (p. 53) "This organized crime, which has been planned down to the last detail, must be avenged in blood. The German people must be taught a `lesson' that would burn out its thuggish nature for centuries to come." (p. 62)

two interesting accounts of hell

I was pleased to find two accounts of different Treblinka survivors in this book. There were extremely few who lived to tell of this highly efficient extermination establishment.
Treblinka easily outdid Auschwitz as the most atrocious place in history .
A little known place even today, almost as unknown as the nazi's planned it to be.

It was alright.

This book was not all that bad, it was interesting and I finished it. It did move kind of slow in a lot of parts. It's really just the story of a young hustla named Javon tying to make the switch from drugs to the music biz. Javon's partna Derrick can't see life without the streets, Peaches is a stripper wanna be video ho who wants Javon to put her on. Fatima is an up and coming singer with a troubled past and an incredible voice. All these people's lives are on a colloision course thanks to jealousy and hate.

Beyond Money, Power, Respect: Author Deborah Mayer's Latest Tome tells an uplifting story reviewed by Sam Cacas

Love & Loyalty by Deborah Mayer (Triple Crown Publications: Columbus, Ohio 2006), paperback, 258pp.

Where and at what point does one draw the line between love and loyalty? This is a recurrent question that is raised throughout the pages of Deborah Mayer's latest tome. And protagonist Javon Williams faces this fateful question of choice the most as he skirts the contrast between living in the game and trying to go legit.

Seemingly, the choice of the latter would appear to be a no-brainer to most okey-doke, straight-arrow folks out there: how could anyone not feign a lifestyle of being an up and coming record producer with a friend from the past and managing cutting-edge talent? That good life was quite attractive to Javon, as opposed to the game of selling drugs and other hustles - a grind that Javon is tired of.

But like many fateful questions in life, this one has complexities melded into Javon's prior lifetime of hustling - most particularly, his association with his lifelong buddy Derrick and fellow hustler.

A related choice Javon faced was whether to keep it real and stay true to Peaches, his stripper girl (aka Patricia Wells) friend who'd remained loyal to him throughout, or to continue being a playa? Throughout this novel, Javon wanders in and out being a do-right man for Peaches and making more than one play at up-and-coming singer Fatima Amir who reluctantly falls for his seductive - bordering on forceful - sexual quid pro quo while she is trying to sign with his record company.

While Mayer's tome portrays not too uncommon characters and occurrences we urban dwellers have experienced in the game, it is truly alluring and inspiring that she paints all participants in this modern, urban drama in their most humane element: Javon's recurring dream and intention to eventually live a clean life; Peaches' persistent daydream to find a man who doesn't step out on her. Such character shaping sets up the innumerable plot twists throughout this novel and make it a recommended read for those who desire to be enlightened about folks whom the media repeatedly paint as the hopelessly lumpen elements who are a dangerous menace to society. And for telling this story so compellingly, Mayer deserves kudos as well as many, many readers.

As always, Collier has a good eye for detail, giving us intimate portraits of wildflowers and lily pads. He can also frame big scenes like Mount Sneffels soaring behind a hay field, and captures much in the middle, like slot-canyon waterfalls and alpine lakes. An additional delight of this collection is a section of San Juan photographs taken by Grant Collier's great-great-grandfather, Joseph Collier, who lugged heavy glass plates into the high country in the 1880s. Grant Collier is one of Colorado's premier nature photographers. He also produces yearly wall calendar and his images have been displayed in galleries throughout Colorado.

A beautiful tribute to an amazing mountain range

Colorado's San Juan Mountains are arguably the most spectacular range in a state renowned for jaw-dropping alpine scenery. Whether one speaks of vastness, elevation, wildness or aesthetics, the San Juans hold their own against any region of the Southern Rockies. The range is also a major destination for landscape photographers, and while it would take a truly vast portfolio to encompass all the various aspects and characters of these mountains, this compact volume by Grant Collier goes a long way towards the task.

Colorado's San Juan Mountains is a slim book by monograph standards, more of a night-stand or guestroom book than a massive coffee-table item. The printing is overall quite nice, and the photography on display is very fine indeed. Collier demonstrates a wide range, with all four seasons and a full array of the San Juans' ecological zones represented. Shots of the range's claims to fame (i.e. big peaks, incredible wildflowers and autumn colors) abound, but the grand landscapes are nicely complemented by intimate forest and detail images.

What really makes this book stand out from similar offerings is the inclusion of a set of historic images shot by Joseph Collier, the author's great-great-grandfather. A pioneering photographer from Britain, Joseph Collier immigrated to Colorado in 1871, and had the good fortune to photograph the mining heyday of the San Juans in the 1880's. Whenever I pass by the mining ruins of Telluride, Silverton and Ouray, I always feel a shiver at the thought of all the men who came from far-flung places to this forbiddingly beautiful alpine wilderness, and then descended into the earth. Horses went underground and emerged blind, and they say it was once possible to walk from Silverton to Telluride without seeing the light of day. The historic Collier's photographs of mines and mining men remind us not to dismiss these mountains as a mere playground or postcard backdrop. For many, this country meant not hiking and scenery but life and death, a hope of riches amidst the despair of toiling poverty.

My only criticism of the book is that it focuses heavily on the western part of the range. This is understandable enough, since that is the country that most visitors see, with arguably the best scenery and certainly the most historic interest and best access. But it would have been nice to see more shots from the less-known country further east, such as the eastern Weminuche, South San Juan and La Garita Wildernesses. Nonetheless, it remains a beautiful collection of images of some of America's finest scenery.

Serious skill development through FUN and games

W-O-W! The Big Book of Gymnastics Games is just what I have been looking for. I was getting burned out teaching the same drills over and over and my creativity was really stretched trying coming up with new ideas that would keep my students' attention. The book provides step by step instructions from game benefits, equipment needed, and set-up to rules for play, cautions, modifications, and extra hints for success. The full-color pictures help me get instant understanding and see the games in action. Because it lays flat when opened, sometimes I take the book right out on the floor with me while coaching. My students LOVE the games, (I have a hard time getting them to stop playing), their skill development has excellerated and I feel my own coaching has improved as well. I am thrilled with my purchase and recommend it highly, especially to those who keep trying to swipe mine...get your own, you'll be glad you did!

Simply The Best Gymnastics Book Ever - Period.

I've coached gymnastics for over ten years and have never come across a resource like this before. This is simply the best gymnastics activity book ever published...period.

The digital photos are crystal clear, and the spiral binding allows me to easily use it on the floor while coaching. Also, since I can't do all the moves myself, the pictures are great for the students to see exactly what I'm asking them to do.

I've bought one for each of my coaches and for less than $30 it was a steal. I would have easily paid double that price, no kidding.

I didn't realize that the author also does workshops, a definite for the near future.

This is a must buy for any coach wishing to get students excited about gymnastics.

Best Book I Have Encountered!

This book is by far the best book on teaching gymnastics that I have encountered. I bought ten copies so I could distribute a copy to each of the instructors in my program. Not only were the individual games fantastic, but the overall themes and ideas changed the way I think about coaching and motivation. It even changed the way I think about motivation in settings outside of the gym. I learned how to better foster cooperation and a sense of challenge and accomplishment for each student. I strongly recommend careful reading of the introduction as well as the last two paragraphs of the "About the Author" section.

Here is the complete history of the railroad that was originally built with a large investment of British capital to transport cotton from the farms of Southside Virginia to the port of Norfolk. It operated a steam powered narrow gauge branch line and Southern Railway steam locomotives during its 50-year lease to that road, then favored Alco diesels during its period of independent operation and subsequent operation by the Norfolk and Western Railway as the Norfolk, Franklin and Danville Railroad. The book has also been updated to cover the history of the railroad since the creation of the Norfolk Southern Corporation and provides a new color section that will be of interest to modelers and historians. Extended photo captions also provide details on the railroad's locomotives, Norfolk naval operations, stations and rolling stock. In addition to fans of the A&D, the book will be of interest to fans of the Southern Railway, Norfolk and Western Railroad, Norfolk Southern Corporation, shortlines and narrow gauge railroads.

AME Group's book, PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, was key in my passing the PMP exam on the first attempt and by a substantial margin! I think this book is 'must have' study material. AME Group's (Aileen's) questions and explanations of Best and Wrong answers accelerated the process of understanding content and the inter-relationships of the project management processes. I also used Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep which had some very helpful information that can't be found in the PMBOK guide. However, I found Aileen's questions and solutions to be more representative of the exam than Rita's and much easier to digest. --R. Trojan

Going through Aileen Ellis' AME Group PMP Exam Prep Class and using her PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book was key in my passing the exam on the first try and receiving my PMP Credential. I have looked at several other PMP Exam Prep books and sets of Exam Prep Questions but none of them held up to AME Group's approach. Aileen's catch phrase ;Why the best answer is best and the wrong answers are wrong; accurately describes how she has carefully engineered a learning system that allows the PMP (or CAPM) candidate to place the myriad facts; Knowledge Areas; Process Groups; Inputs, Tools and Techniques, and Outputs; and the PMI Mindset; into an understandable context that greatly facilitates absorbing the PMBOK and thus being able to pass the exam. And, her questions were much more in line with what I saw in my exam than other sets of questions I have seen. In addition to using AME Group's PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book, those fortunate enough to also attend Aileen's PMP (or CAPM) Prep Classes as I did will also benefit from her ability to relate what's in the PMBOK to actual Project Management - sort of a two for the price of one; benefit that also contributes to the very impressive;Pass Rate; enjoyed by her students. The Exam Question Strategy and the Types of Questions; detailed in the front of the book were worth the price of the book. The book also provides hundreds of questions and answers similar to other exam preparation books. This book, unlike many others, explains why incorrect answers are wrong and provides references directing the reader to additional sources if needed or desired. This book is an excellent way to review and prepare for the Project Management Institute (PMI) ® Project Management Professional (PMP) ® exam. --Jasson Williams

Less than my expectations for taking an expensive test.

In virtually all professional testing I have done in 40 years of engineering, flying, and professional development, when I have paid this much for a book of test questions, I have an expectation of some of these questions showing up on the actual test. The material in the PMP course is extremely detailed. This practice test book test depth was not nearly detailed enough to prepare for the PMP test. I thought I was prepared by understanding these questions. That was not true. I don't like being negative. But I like even less being led to believe that I was preparing correctly for this expensive test.

Not the greatest but useful.

Nothing wrong with this book. However if you want test questions then I would use the website [...] The reason this is a better option is that it simulates the actual question of the test and gives you PDU's to boot. I found this book really did not help me for the test as much as I wanted it too. I would recommend it a tool to help you study but as a test prep tool not so much. Stick with the InSite test banks prior to your test and you will be fine!
