Stringer should probably stick to publishing...

... and leave the writing to the pros. I bought Gavin Sinclair's book and this one at the same time and Sinclair's book is head and shoulders above this one. Stringer's book reminded me of something that might have been appropriate for 6th graders, not serious authors looking for a manual on self-publishing. I've also read her novel "Let that be the reason" and let's just say publishing might be her calling...

General info, but still worth adding to collection

I am not that big a fan of street lit (even though this isn't street lit, I still think of it as such because it is published by Triple Crown) so it was hard for me to pick this title up and read it without judging the content of the other books she has published. But after realizing she is successful in the publishing industry for a reason, I knew I needed to add this book to my library. It is not as detailed as I would have liked. She actually glosses over the details and gives a very general overview of the business. Still, its information that everyone who is interested in publishing should know. There are more detailed books out there about the (self) publishing industry but again, you can't deny there is something about Ms. Stringer.

As the author indicates, the book should also be useful, as species' ranges overlap, for collectors along the northern coasts of the Gulf of Mexico as well as for those in the Caribbean.

This little gem of a book is one of those that after you take it home and start using it you grow to really appreciate just how handy, concise, and helpful it is. Trish Hartmann has compiled a book that is useful for the beginner as well as the more advanced shell collector or beachcomber. The book starts out with a few general chapters such as "How to Use this Book," "Bivalve Biology," "Human Uses of Bivalves," "Florida Coastal Habitats," and "Shell Collecting." The heart of the book is the identification section. There are 27 bivalve families with 167 bivalve species presented. The left-hand page has the text associated with the shell, with common name, scientific name, identification tips, similar species, habitat, range, and comments. The facing right-hand page has a color plate of the species described on the left-hand page. These are some of the best images you will find in a shell book. The images are clear and often come with a magnified inset if a particular feature should be stressed. The printing quality is such that you can magnify an image and you will still find a high-quality image without graininess or blurring. The author has been extremely careful with systematics. Both the scientific names and common names used in this book are up-to-date and correct. This book is a worthy addition to anyone's library ... I have bought and read about every shell identification book available on Florida's abundant and beautiful shells. Yet, I really did not learn the basics of shell identification. They all seemed to fall short of my expectations. Most were merely booklets with off-color pictures that were worthless. They are all collecting dust in my bookcase. With all those mediocre shell books stowed in my bookcase, I was somewhat apprehensive that Bivalve Seashells of Florida would be just another one of the useless Florida shell books I have already read. Was I wrong! First I noticed that the photographs are very precise and truly look like the shells I encounter and need to identify. The book mentions that the photographs can be used for identification and that is no exaggeration. I knew that this was a serious book. With excitement I thumbed through the pages. It was not long before I had the pages dog-eared and notes scribbled here and there. The book just became my primary reference for Florida bivalves. I dropped the book on my side table just long enough to retrieve a baggie full of unidentified shells. It wasn't long before I had them labeled and ready for my shell cabinet. Success! Although it does not have some rare deep-water seashells, you can bet that almost everything you gather on a field trip or a casual walk on a beach will be listed among the 167 species covered. What specifically did I like about the book? * The size and weight of the book makes it perfect for field trips. Studying shells while at home is fine but the excitement of the trip is over. I like to know right away what it is that I found. I need a book that is handy and so do most shell collectors. This is the book to take. Nothing says "fun trip" more than sand in the floorboards of your car, shells smelling like salt water and a field guide to help you identify them. * The photographs were, as I said before, very good and as a bonus, key identification features were also included. Comparing little features makes classification a breeze - almost dreamlike. * Scientific names were up to date. I purposely checked the pecten to verify if the names were, indeed, current. They were. * The top of the identification section's page were cleverly marked with the family names for effortless reference. I hate thumbing back-and-forth between an index and the data pages. * The descriptions were simple but did not leave out any required data. You must read the excellent explanation on shell anatomy - something that always confused me until now. * I discovered a side benefit to having read this book - since I also collect fossil shells, the features that I learned about in this book have doubled my ability to understand the enigmatic facts written by scientists about the brain teasing shells found in Florida's prehistoric pits. Do I recommend the book for beginners - without a doubt it should be your first book to read and use. In fact, buy two - one for the bookcase and one for your car - I did. What about advanced collectors? It is equally good for identifying shells outside of your expertise and as a general reference manual - especially in the field. --Bill Hoefer

Mind blowing!

This book is amazing! I loved every page and I didn’t even know it until the end. The problem is that I cannot seem to be able to review a book that is more than it appears. This book is more than the blurb. It’s a story mixed with another story. It’s the limit between reality and imagination.

The characters are spectacular, Finn evolves in a world of darkens, a world in which Snow becomes his light, his good side. He tries to keep her away from his imperfections, he tries to hide his darkness from her. She is his hope of a better future. When his hope is in danger, he will do everything in his power to reach her, to save her.

But the story is more than a telepathic friendship, as it will show you two realities that are about to collide. Will these realities bring Finn his peace of mind? Will he be able to keep Snow alive? You tell me!

I was completely surprised by the ending, it’s mind blowing! Not a single moment such a finale could have crossed my mind! Again, this is one of these titles that deserve more than 5 stars. A big “Congratulations!!! “ and I hope the book and the author receive all the praise that they truly deserve!

Psychological thrillers are ALL the rage these days and in this book, I found another 5 star contender.

The synopsis gives you a good sense of the book. There isn't anything more that can be added without giving the essence of the book away.

What I can say is that I was riveted. That Snow and Finn developed an unusual psychic connection out of nowhere and having never met each other was of particular interest to me.

It's not often I'm wrong in predicting the ending of a book, and then even rarer when I enjoy the true ending compared to my speculations. This is one of those rare occasions! Circelli doesn't just do an amazing job in keeping one on the edge of their seat, she astounds in the guessing game she makes you play.

This is a story that demands a reread to fully comprehend the story, and in the most amazing way. The twists will linger in your mind long after you finish the story. I can't say much more, because I will never give anything away. Just read this magnificently told story of Finn and Snow. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author
Marguerite Duras was born in 1914 in Giadinh, Vietnam to French parents, both teachers. She went to live in Paris at eighteen and studied mathematics, law, and political science at the Sorbonne. In 1935, she became a civil servant in the Ministry for Colonial Affairs. During WWII, she was active in the Resistance and in 1945 she joined the Communist Party. She wrote the screenplay for Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima mon amour (1959). In 1984, her internationally bestselling novel The Lover won the Prix Goncourt. In addition to making a dozen films, Duras wrote more than 45 novels and plays over the course of her life.

Mark Polizzotti has translated the work of Jean Echenoz, Gustave Flaubert, André Breton, Christian Oster, in addition to Duras’ novel Writing in 1998 (Lumen Editions). He is the author of Revolution of the Mind: The Life of André Breton (FSG) and is director of publications at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited will be released this fall with Continuum.

Before anything else, at the beginning of the story told here, there was a screening of India Song at an art cinema in the city where you lived. After the film there was a panel discussion in which you participated. Then after the panel we went to a bar with some young graduate students, one of whom was you. It was you who reminded me later, much later, about that bar, a fairly elegant, attractive place, and about the two whiskeys I had that evening. I had no recollection of those whiskeys, nor of you, nor of the other young grad students, nor of the bar. I recalled, or so I thought, that you had walked me to the park- ing lot where I’d left my car. I still had that Renault 16, which I loved and still drove fast back then, even after the health prob- lems related to alcohol. You asked me if I had lovers. I said, Not anymore, which was true. You asked how fast I drove at night. I said ninety, like everyone else with an R16. That it was wonderful.

Best guide book for WNC

If you are a paddler in WNC you probably already own this book... if not, you should! Leland gives detailed descriptions of most of the good whitewater in WNC in a tried and true format. He includes all the beta you need, including difficulty, gradient, put in and takeout, access issues, gauges, flows, descriptions of most of the bigger rapids, over all description of the river character, and any other pertinent information. When it came out, it became the standard for whitewater boaters in the area. The layout is fantastic, and there are plenty of great pictures to get you psyched about the runs. The bottom line: if you are a boater in the SE, this is your bible, and you should keep it in the car at all times for quick reference while you are chasing rain.

Robert McKenna has spent his lifetime observing coastal and nautical life. A former Coast Guard officer, maritime reporter, and columnist, he is a book editor and the author of The Dictionary of Nautical Literacy, a lexicon of our seagoing culture. Married with two daughters, he lives in Noank, Connecticut where he writes, sails, fishes, teaches, coaches, experiments with seafood recipes, and mixes a salubrious Margarita.

Must-have guide for every sailor and nautical enthusiast!

Get your copy, stuff it lovingly into a drybag, place in the saloon (or your bar ashore), and refer to it as often as possible (meaning, while raising a pint or uncorking a good rainwater Madeira with friends). You know Mr. McKenna has covered all the bases in this thoroughly enjoyable book, when (to my relief), he recounted the famous christening toast by Judge Smails in Caddyshack. Still the funniest nautical toast that I can recall. Great tidbits of lore, stuff you thought you didn't need to know, but are glad that you do now. This is a coffee table book that you can slip into your blazer pocket to impress the boys at the Yacht Club...or the tiki bar.

For the Host, with the Toast, that pleases the Most!

What a fun book! I ordered one for my father (it arrived right away despite what the shipping information said). He's an old salt who swallowed the anchor long ago. Like many other boaters, he enjoys the occasional cocktail, and it was great to see him raise his glass and hear him bellow out in laughter. I ordered a bunch more for my all my friends with boats (so that they'll keep inviting me aboard).

A Great Gift

This book was the "Perfect Gift" for my sailing buddies and family. I've used it for Fathers Day, brothers birthdays and also a "Bon Voyage" gift for a Coast Guard Commander departing for a new assignemnt. They were fun to present during a dinner party and immediately watch the happy recipient quickly thumb through pages then watch their expression as they latch on to one and belt out "raise your glasses I have a toast!"

I've depleted my supply and have an order in for more to keep on hand for the next occasion.
