Overview of Methods For the student of Mandarin today, many learning tools are available, from simple word lists to sophisticated computer programs with voice-analyzing functions. All have one thing in common: they all require a massive amount of time because they are based on rote memorization. This book is the first to provide multiple short-cuts to learning Mandarin. The book’s short-cuts, more formally called "mnemonics," aid memory through clues to something unfamiliar in something familiar. For example, the phrase, "Mnemonics Neatly Eliminates Man’s Only Nemesis---Insufficient Cerebral Storage," is a mnemonic for remembering how to spell "mnemonics." It is a type called an "acrostic," which uses the first letter of words in a phrase (something familiar) to identify another series of words (something unfamiliar). By far, most mnemonics are acrostics. For learning Mandarin, however, they have limited value because of the large number of Mandarin (pînyîn) syllables that begin with j, q, x, y, and z; absence of any that begin with i, u, or v; and few that begin with o. As the graphic below indicates, many other types of mnemonics can be applied to Mandarin. And rather than just being visual in nature, these mnemonics may provide clues that are visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or combinations of these modes of learning.

Fiske is a linguistic curmudgeon, a stickler for proper definitions and clarity of style. Readers will likely love him or hate him quickly. Sticklers prickle our prose and discomfort us when we are called up short of perfection. And some of use aim for perfection. First, the title indicates a philosophical reflection on language. Besides a few chops about silence, it is not that, but, rather, a feisty book about usage.

Second, Fiske is repetitive with his insults, often lambasting "laxographers" (his neologism) and "descriptive linguists". Insults abound, some on point, others mean-spirited. I question some of his resolute judgments. Take one: "It ain't over till its over," which is attributed to Yogi Berra. This is not a tautology because Berra was talking about the logic of baseball. Since baseball does not run on a clock, but proceeds according to a set number of outs, it is possible that a team could be down by 10 runs (or any number) with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and win the same. But in clock-oriented sports, come comebacks are impossible, because there is not enough time to score six touch downs or make thirty-five baskets. Therefore, Fiske, in his passion to condemn idiocy and bad taste, blunders badly.

Third, I doubt there is much here not found in one Fiske's other books. Fourth, he often chides or condemns dictionaries of the descriptive sort, such as Miriam-Websters. But he sometimes seems to condemn then all! If so, where do we go for authoritative meanings? He does not say, except to offer himself.

In the beginning was the Word and the Word remains. Since all our words answer to the Word, let us mind our words well.

do not pass this book up!

This spicy, exciting book has something for everyone--mystery, romance, and strong characters. I love the main character, Nora's, biting take on life. It's a wild, racy ride that keeps you on your toes and doesn't let you down. Sharp, entertaining writing keeps you coming back for more. It's one of those books you stay up late at night for just so you can get in a few more thrilling pages. You won't be disappointed!

The cover says this book will be offensive; it is

Nora Delaney is an extremely successful college basketball coach and a well-known womanizer. When she's not on the court, she's in someone's bed or in a bar and she enjoys her life. She's not very happy when she gets a bizarre phone call from her ex-lover Michelle asking for help, but she's really shaken up when she finds out the next day that Michelle has been murdered. Nora decides to take a trip from LA to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to try and find out what happened. In Tulsa, she learns that she really didn't know anything about a woman she lived with for years. She also meets a group of women who are extremely eclectic in their personalities. Nora finds herself torn between chasing after an enticing woman and trying to find out what happened to Michelle. The closer she gets to the answer to that, the less sure she is that she wants to know what it is.

Femme Noir is meant to be a flashback to the movies of the 1950's that were black and white and peopled by tough guys and tougher babes. The print in the book is done to look like it was written on an old typewriter to capture that feeling and there are plenty of scenes based around bars, smoking, sex, and tough talk. The back blurb says that the book is a satire full of cock-eyed optimism. The satire is certainly there, but it's heavy handed and forced, while optimism is probably not a word the reader will associate with this book. Dialogue is not witty, but often ridiculous and many of the situations don't seem to have relevance to the plot.

"In this book is something to offend everyone." This statement from the back blurb is the truest statement about the book. Nora Delaney is written to be an African American woman and she makes statements about white people that tread on the edge of being blatantly racist. The reader might excuse this as trying to see American society through the eyes of a black woman, so it will be a shock to know that the author is a white woman. There is something unsettling about the words that come out of Nora's mouth when the character talks about whites and then when she talks about blacks and the reader remembers a white woman is writing the words. In creating Nora's character, Nipper gave her all of the negative characteristics of the "tough guys" of the noir films. That means she treats women totally as sex objects and her descriptions of them are phrased in the rawest language possible. Since Nipper's stated goal was to offend everyone, she would have to be considered successful, but this book is not enjoyable to read. Most of what is in it will probably bother you.

This is a terrible read. Don't waste your money. A not very interesting story. The black protagonist refers to white women as "cracker" and "white b---," yet she still lusts after one. I guess it's fitting that the author is white. At any rate, don't waste your time or money on this one.

FOR SERIOUS STUDENTS OF THE JFK ASSASSINATION

NEXUS is the story of how President John F. Kennedy was removed by elements within his own government. A group of bitter misguided patriots, who were soldiers in the covert war against Fidel Castro, were behind the plot. Compartmentalization in a well planned intelligence operation is an excuse to eliminate blame for whatever is later proven to be true.

This is an important, historical work. Larry Hancock is one of the best researcher/authors on this subject of Cold War intrigue we have ever seen. NEXUS is a fine companion piece to Someone Would Have Talked and *the* book for people looking for a starting point in learning about the JFK Assassination.

NEXUS provides background on the CIA, how Black Ops work, and the Intel games that were being played in 1963. While SWHT deals with the conspiracy on the ground, NEXUS looks at the top echelon of the CIA including DDP Richard Helms and C/CI James Angleton.

There is information, material, and names in this book which one will not find elsewhere in print related to these matters. I echo Mr. Sanders' sentiments that NEXUS is a "Must Read."

Fantastic Research on Complex topic

My Father was the Dallas Kodak Manager who supervised the development of the Zapruder film, and I've had a serious interest in the real facts about the JFK murder since that day. I also fully agree with the review comments from John Sanders. In fact, I had the opportunity to meet the Author Larry Hancock two years ago, and I recall that he had originally conceived of his book "Someone Would Have Talked" as a research book intended for researchers.

In this new book, NEXUS, Larry presents significant new research on early CIA activities - - - which provides important background material for his earlier book "Someone Would Have Talked". This is a complex topic, presented facdtually. Larry has pulled together facts and details from thousands of sources to explain the motivation and the skills that CIA related operatives acquired - - - and used in the JFK Assassination.

When reading NEXUS or Someone Would Have Talked, I highly recommend that you visit Larry's web site at [...] go the the SWHT page, and print out copies of the CIA organizational "CHARTS", which are very usefull for reference as you read both books.

A "must read"

As a student of the JFK assassination since the early `70s, and a researcher and writer on the subject, I thought that I'd read everything of importance about that dark time in our history. After reading NEXUS, now I feel that I have, finally.

This is an incredibly well researched and analyzed work that answers so many of the questions surrounding how this national tragedy could have happened, why the conspirators felt the need to make the decision to end the Kennedy administration, and the machinations required to keep this horrific story from the American people.

If ever there was a "must read" for not only researchers, but Americans who want to understand this pivotal moment in history, this is it. Larry Hancock is a terrific writer and researcher, and his ability to untangle the web of the conspiracy is remarkable. I've tried to do it, but Hancock does it clearly and concisely.

I can't recommend this book enough!

Great book to use in preparation of the ACP exam

Not sure how much this book helped

I did pass the PMP exam on the first try, but I am not sure how much this book helped. Mostly I relied on the test CD and chapter tests as study diagnostics. They became too repetitive after a while. I can't compare it with the other major prep guides out there, since I didn't use them. My suggestion would be 1) have project experience 2) get the PMBOK 3) Create a study plan, or a project plan(!) 4) Schedule the exam to prevent procrastination 5) Get studying.

Not a good book for actual Exam

This book is good for understanding concepts but actual exam is MORE difficult than sample questions provided in this book and CD. I could answer 100% of all questions in this book but in actual exam, I could get only 67%(New PMP Exam). Also, language used for questions in this book is very simple compare to actual exam questions.

Conclusion, do not rely ONLY on this book to pass exam.

Improving your chances for a great cruise

I have been on a few cruises, but not on a wide variety of ships. I was looking for ideas and advice. This book provided it, up to a point. A key idea is that the attitude you bring on board with you will have more of an impact on how happy you are with the cruise than will anything else.

I would have liked to have seen more in the way of comparisons of experiences in different staterooms both on a particular class of ships and across ships. I would like to have seen more about excursions, particularly about making smart choices (e.g., safety) when not on the ship.

The book should be updated periodically. I have used the author's website, but have not found it particularly helpful for the cruise lines in which I am currently interested.

I don't know if there are comparable books available. If not, then I would recommend the book for a person who does not have a lot of cruise experience.
