About the Author
The author was born and raised in a historic old Riverfront Town along the Waccamaw River deep down in the southeast. He is the son of a Gullah chief from Sandy Island, S.C. (his father was the youngest Gullah chief in the history of Annie Village on Sandy Island). He spent many summers on the island as a young child growing up, and his experiences from those years has compelled him to come back to his roots now that he is retired, to record the history of the people and the area as seen from his perspective and vantage point. He is committed and dedicated to documenting and recording an artistic preservation of the history of a unique people and their culture, through art, writings, books, films, illustrations, etc. A glimpse into the customs habits and folkways of a unique people and their culture. The author is also an artist and painter, and lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 35 years. He also has a degree in accounting from San Francisco State University, and a JD degree from San Francisco Law School. He retired in June 2002 to devote full time to documenting his artistic preservation of, my people down home. About the Author
Kimball Taylor has been scolded by a leper; robbed in Peru; nearly duped by a Balinese transvestite; riddled by malarial mosquitoes in Ecuador; attacked by baboons in Africa; and mocked, browbeaten and harangued by great and not-so-great surfers around the world. A senior writer for Surfer magazine, Taylor also contributes to various other surf publications. He holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and is currently a candidate for a master's in creative writing at San Diego State University. This is his first collection of stories.

Long on Story, Short on Surf

Although the book's subtitle says "Surf Stories and Adventure," it is more about descriptive adventure than actual surf stories. In one chapter, the hills are described as, "the hides of dead dinosaurs bleaching in the sun." I don't know about you, but it's probably been a few millenniums since I saw a dinosaur hide bleaching in the sun on my way to the beach, so I have a hard time remembering exactly what they looked like. Even the adventures would not by surfing standards be considered adventuresome.

If Jerry Seinfeld was a surfer, these stories would be like sitcom episodes: interesting, but really about nothing. When the chapters ended, it was not necessarily a conclusion, but just an ending.

If you're looking for something like "Surfings Greatest Misadaventures," you will be very disappointed.

Not funny, not that informative, and written in a style apparently attempting to impress with major writing skills. Just not enough interest in the stories and not worth my time, maybe it will be for yours. Try Gerry Lopez book or Misadventures of Surfing which I read at the same time which were much better.

Tasty Seafood recipes. I loved this book.

HEART-WARMING STORIES PLUS KEEN DAILY WISDOM!

Here is a heart-warming collection of life lessons based on the loving relationship between the author and her dog, Bunny. We learn in the book that Bunny is stricken with a crippling disease, but manages to live an abundant life for 15 years. During that time, Bunny's everyday existence reminds the author of what an important role love plays in the human heart and soul.

The stories which illustrate every chapter help ground us as human souls. We come to realize that Bunny (or our own dogs) won't be around very long and will most often leave us feeling sad by their loss. But the lessons of love that our dogs teach during this short time are all worth having had in our lives.

I was particularly moved by this book because of the Scottie Dog name Maggie that my girlfriend purchased last year. Maggie will be celebrating her 1st birthday in February. The joy that Maggie has brought to us is immense and is beyond the understanding of most of our friends. Before reading this book, I thought that we were kind of strange, but now I see that many other people love their dogs in the special way that we do.

I loved the story about Bunny proudly retrieving the gopher and opossum from the author's backyard. The same thing happened to me many years ago with my first Scottie Dog and is the funniest memory that I have from that dog.

As far as lessons go, I appreciate the idea of living our own lives with no regrets --- giving love unconditionally and abundantly. While I've learned these lessons from other teachers, the illustrations with our own dogs seem to resonant more fully with me than in other ways.

And as an added bonus, I enjoyed the many cartoons and quotations that are peppered throughout the book and make it such an enjoyable and memorable read.

lessons on relationships and life from a dear household pet for pet lovers and others

Along with countless others, this author has learned why a pet owner helplessly develops a deep affection for a pet--namely, "they demand so little--a word, a pat...Yet, they give us so much." However, in "Paws of Wisdom," Steryo-Bartmus explores a deeper level of the bond between owner and pet. "Although we cannot communicate with our pets verbally, I do believe that we form bonds that go beyond verbal communications. These bonds touch our senses in a much deeper level." It was not until the death of her pet dog of close to fifteen years that the author began to gain a consciousness of just what this deeper connection with a pet had to offer her. As she gradually came to realize--and what she writes about--is that her pet dog named Bunny was actually in many ways a teacher for her. As Steryo-Bartmus comes to understand, the enjoyable, long-term companionship between owner and pet, while rewarding in itself, can be like a fertile field out of which lessons about one's own life, behavior, and relationships grow for those like the author willing to seek them.

"Paws of Wisdom" is part a picture of the relationship between a pet and its owner, part a self-help guide, and part a spiritual journey. The author complements her own words of wisdom gained from her relationship with Bunny with similar words from noted persons from ancient Chinese philosophers to modern-day businesspersons. Steryo-Bartmus' lesson "If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it" learned from her pet dog is linked with Edward Eggelston's insightful point, "Persistent people begin their success where others end in failure." Pet-lovers are not the only ones who will find wisdom, solace, and guidance in this work.

This is a wonderful book! I love it!

I've been involved with cats for the last few years, but my first, best friend in childhood was my dog Tip. As I was reading Sofia Steryo-Bartmus' wonderful book, a flood of warm dog memories came back. This book, "Paws of Wisdom" describes beautifully the amazing bond that can exist between a person and a pet. Steryo-Bartmus tells the story of her relationship with her dog Bunny and all the joy and love they shared. This is a book filled with joy, love, and wisdom.

One of my own favorite themes in life is the idea that there is amazing wisdom and truth available for us, but it often comes in unlikely and unexpected places. And what more unlikely and unexpected place is there to gain wisdom than from your dog! But that is the beauty of this book. It shows through a number of great stories, the wisdom Sofia gains through her relationship with Bunny. Some of that wisdom is painful and hard won, because of Bunny's struggle with Addison's disease. But this is a very uplifting and inspiring story! I believe I am a better person for having read this book.

I am going to give this book to all my friends who have dogs. I can't think of a better gift. In fact it is a great book even if you don't have a dog! I really love it. I can't recommend it too highly.

Absolutely fantastic!

I just purchased this book and have already tried several of the recipes. I really like the idea that I can use some of the key elements from this book to help my existing recipes. Chef Steve and Jason are great, I just met them last week at Cal A Vie, but their attention to detail and the meticulous way that this book was created is evident page by page.

As someone who has been to the spa I wish there were even more recipes and less about the spa because I just cannot get enough of the recipes. You really will not regret this beautiful book that has some incredible content.

Each recipe has the calorie counts which is great for those that are trying to watch their diet.

I cannot wait for the 2nd book!

This is the best gourmet spa cookbook available. It is creative, easy to follow, gorgeous, and inspiring. It is the most outstanding, low calorie, up to date book of its kind. I made the Lobster Mashed Potatoes with Roasted Tenderloin of Beef and my guests thought they had died and gone to heaven.

About the Author
Theodore Shoebat is the son of Walid Shoebat, former PLO member and Muslim Brotherhood activist. At age 16, Ted released his first book, In Satan's Footsteps. He grew up in the US and attended public schools. Because of his conservative and religious upbringing, he often struggled with his teachers and fellow students. He personally witnessed Holocaust denial, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism in the schools and his defense of Israel and the Jewish people made him a target of ridicule and mockery.

This book is about evil throughout history and how it interconnects. Exposes connections between cults and Islam. You will not even be aware the research and writig were done by a 16 year old - it is so fascinating and well written

I have never before seen a literal comparison of the experiences of "leaders" of non biblical groups.
I have new insight on how the enemy works. More predictable than I would have thought.
The book should be available through Walid Shoebats website.

Good Read!

This book is well written and thought out. The author shows a common thread between what has been in the past and what is happening in our world today. While a couple of times I would have preferred to have had more information included on a certain subject, at least he gave plenty of footnotes so that i could follow the "rabbit trails" that interested me. This is certainly worth your time if you are interested in such topics.

Fighting with JEB Stuart: Major James Breathed and the Confederate Horse Artillery is the first biography of this important Southern officer, a brave and virtuous warrior who embodied all the qualities that made the Confederate Army one of the finest in history. Breathed s resume of combat mirrors that of General Lee s legendary Army of Northern Virginia. Major Breathed was involved in eighty-six battles, engagements and skirmishes. When the Civil War began, James Breathed was a 21-year-old physician at the beginning of his medical career. A Virginian by birth, and raised on a plantation in Maryland, he cast his lot with the Confederacy in April 1861. By chance, he shared a seat on a train with James Ewell Brown (JEB) Stuart, who encouraged Breathed to join the 1st Virginia Cavalry, a regiment commanded by Stuart. Breathed was then transferred to the newly formed Stuart Horse Artillery. For the doctor-turned-warrior, it was a perfect assignment. Unencumbered by formal military training, Breathed developed his own unique style of command. Relentless in his efforts to defeat the enemy, he exhibited conspicuous gallantry and accomplishments on so many fields that his actions separated him from the pack of other battery commanders inside and outside the cavalry arm. Breathed s handling of horse artillery and accurate fire became recognizable to his enemies. Alexander C. M. Pennington, the leader of a celebrated Union battery of the horse artillery, looked forward to and dreaded his many encounters with Breathed. In the minds of the Confederate veterans who knew him best, Breathed was no less of a legend than artillerist John Pelham. After the war doctor Breathed returned to continue his practice of medicine in Hancock, Maryland. He died February 14, 1870. This study is based upon previously unknown or overlooked family primary documents and archival sources, a keen appreciation of the terrain over which Breathed s guns rolled and fought, and a broad foundation of knowledge of the American Civil War in the Eastern Theater. Fighting With JEB Stuart adds something dramatically new to the literature of the Civil War.

About the Author
David P. Bridges, theologian, historian, biographer, outdoorsman and horseman, began writing about the Civil War period after nearly two decades of serving as an ordained Presbyterian minister. Bridges undergraduate B.S. degree in economics was received from The University of Kentucky. He furthered his academic experience and studied theology and history at the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and The University of Chicago, Divinity School. In order to further enhance his writing he learned to fire cannon and fight as dismounted cavalry so that he could participate in Civil War reenactments with the 2nd Virginia Cavalry & Stuart Horse Artillery, based in Roanoke, Virginia. David resides in Richmond, Virginia, with his faithful birddogs Angel, Bella and Rosey.

Good Book about a Little Known Aspect of the Cavalry

There have been many stories written about the Amcerican Civil War. But I've seen few written about the artillery, and to my knowledge none at all about the Horse Artillery that served with and went with the cavalry. This alone would make this book a welcome addition to a Civil War library.

Wars are fought by young men. Still it is a surprise to read when a 'kid' of only twenty-one becomes an officer, and shortly thereafter is a Major.

Major Breathed was already a physician when he joined the Confederate Army. He served all through the war, not as a physician but as a combat leader. He was in almost all the significant battles in the Eastern Theater. This reports on an aspect of the war that is little known.

The book is extensively researched and well written. It reads well yet is full of detail that fills in the story in a most interesting way.

A legend in his time remembered

From a fortuitous collection of unpublished family scrapbooks, David Bridges has resurrected the life of a man who was an absolute legend in the South during the Civil War. However, Jim Breathed died right after the war and left no memoirs, nor did he write letters. His memory was alive in the minds of those he served with him, but, unfortunately, faded as they passed away.

David Bridges has pulled together, after years of research, a very readable and detailed account of the numerous deeds that made Jim Breathed the most respected commander of horse artillery in the Confederacy during his lifetime. Breathed was there at Manassas and there at Lee's surrender, and at virtually every battle the Army of Northern Virginia fought. Pelham is better known, and was unquestionably "gallant," but Breathed was one of the fiercest fighters the war produced (at least according to Robt. E Lee in a statement made after the war).

This book is a private printing. Get a copy while you can if you want to have an important gap in Civil War history finally filled. Relive Breathed's deeds at Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Single-handedly holding up the entire V Union Fifth Corps at the Alsop Farm between the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, Yellow Tavern, Tevellian Station, and engaging in single combat at High Bridge (with both armies looking on) days before Lee surrendered.

It is hoped that Bridges book will serve to place Breathed back in his rightful place in Civil War History

Phenomenal Collection of Engaging Material

As a former student of James', I knew this book would be gold, but it went even above those high expectations. The lessons are engaging and innovative and James' light-hearted style is evident. The book made me smile countless times! Some of my favorite lessons and opportunities for student learning include: Friday the 13th, Cuckoo and Eggs, Loose Teeth, and The Wise Old Owl. A must for any Orff educator!

Best Orff book ever!

I absolutely love this book and absolutely love James, who I took a course with in Salzburg. I teach in Italy and it is a challenge to translate some of the activities while keeping the same rhythmic patterns, but other activities can be used as written; the kids catch on fast and they are so fun it doesn't really matter what language they are in. Great for teachers like me with limited funds who have to make do with recycled materials and very few instruments. I have tons of Orff materials in three languages and this is my all.time favorite. Thanks James!

An interest in places of pilgrimage is very much a part of the life of many people in the modern world. For Christians, it is the Holy Land that holds specific interest - the area where the events described in the Bible, in both the Old and the New Testament, are located.

About the Author
Burton MacDonald is Senior Research Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, NS, Canada. His special interests are the archaeology of Jordan, especially the southern part of the country, within the framework of the prehistory and history of the Ancient Near East and its connection to Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies and the Christian Religion. He has conducted archaeological fieldwork in Jordan since 1977 and has been the director of numerous archaeological surveys throughout the region. His latest survey projects include the Tafila-Busayra Archaeological Survey (19992001), the Ayl to Ras an-Naqb Archaeological Survey (2005-2007; currently under preparation for publication), and the Shammakh to Ayl Archaeological Survey (since 2010).

Wonderful and Unique Guide

I'm always accused of reading nerdy stuff and this review won't help that any, but I'm preparing for a trip to Jordan to visit sites of interest to Christians and this book caught my eye. It is an indispensable book for those who wish to visit Christian sites in west Jordan and quite unique.

The author gives detailed information for about a dozen sites of interest to Christians on the eastern side of the Jordan river, from Biblical sites like Bethany Beyond the Jordan to Byzantine sites like Madaba. Many people don't know that this area was heavily Christian up till the Muslim conquest and is still the home of many Christians today.

He illustrates each site with maps, pictures, diagrams, Biblical references, and historical quotes. There is detailed information of what there is to see at each site, explanations of the ruins, and even some GPS coordinates (a helpful addition). He even gives some brief information of how to get to each site.

And the whole book is readable. On page 24 he even has a great diagram of the layout and technical terms of a Byzantine style church, so you know what an "Aspe" is when it is mentioned in a church description. Brilliant!

Let me just say that if you plan to tour any of these sites, you have to have this book.

My only quibble is that I think he should have included Pella (Tabaqat Fahl) in the book. It has a significant place in early Christian history and is smack dab in the middle of the area he covers, even if there is not much to see at the location.

Great guide book

This is a wonderful guide book on Jordan that incorporates decription of the famous and some of the rarely visit sites. Such material will be a great bonus to anyone who plans an engaging visit to Jordan and absolute must for anyone who is interested in Biblical and Early Christian History of the area. The author combines readable academic articles on the places of interest with traditional format of a thorough guide book. Wonderful presentation! As a regular traveller to Jordan, I hardly can reccomend this book enough.
