About the Author
Michael C. Hurley holds a degree in English Education from the University of Maryland at College Park and a law degree from St. Louis University. He entered private practice as a trial attorney with a firm in Houston in 1984. In 1988, he formed his own practice, later recognized by the Houston Business Partnership as the fastest growing law firm in the city between 1988 and 1991. Following the birth of his second child in 1991, Hurley and his family moved back east to North Carolina, where he has been in private practice since 1993. He has earned success and notoriety as a trial attorney and has been listed in North Carolina Super Lawyers* every year since that recognition was first published in 2006. Hurley was born in Baltimore, the youngest of four children, the child of a working mother and an absent, alcoholic father. Growing up in and around Chesapeake Bay, he was inoculated with a lifelong passion for sailing and the outdoors. He obtained his Coast Guard Captain’s license in 1992 and worked as a sailboat charter captain on the North Carolina coast for six months during the waiting period for admission to the North Carolina bar. Between 1995 and 2004, while practicing law full time, he also published a quarterly sporting journal, Paddle & Portage, devoted to wilderness canoeing. His journal was enjoyed by more than 10,000 subscribers in 48 states and resulted in his first book, Letters from the Woods--recognized as a classic of wilderness canoeing literature that the Raleigh News & Observer described as “pointed, personal, and poignant. a deep and passionate tale of wilderness adventures, a celebration of universal truths” and “well worth reading.” Mike and his wife Susan have four children and are members of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Together they enjoy dancing, travel and entertaining.

Unexpected Treasure

Michael Hurley is a man with a gift. Like the wisp of an inspiration that is found in the most unexpected place that then turns into a life changing moment. That is the feeling I had after reading Letters From the Woods. As an outdoor person and paddling/camping enthusiast I was ready for a book chocked full of outdoor adventures, but this compilation took a decidedly different turn. Using his trips as a backdrop, Michael causes the reader to contemplate the true things in life - family, love, duty and perhaps even the meaning of life, or at the very least, the truth behind a life well lived. At times I found myself entertained, amused, engaged and at others challenged. But challenged in a good way, to look at my relationships with my family and the real bonds that we have built. For as much time as I have spent in the wilderness with my family, Michael's storytelling really inspires me to spend more. All in all, this book is an unexpected treasure, one that I am sure can be read over and over again, and each time the passages will touch a different part of who we are, or who we are becoming. I am giving copies of this book to my friends and am sure it will provide both entertainment and inspiration, whichever they need at the moment.

Letters From the Woods - Kentucky comment

Michael Hurley is a special writer who pays attention to details. In fact, I'm sure it is Hurley's attitude toward details that prompted him to write his first letters which were initially published in "Hurley's Journal." That is where I first came across his writing as I was looking for detailed reviews of canoe trips. I found not only those details, but much more - humor, compassion, empathy, and relevance. I could identify with his interest in writing, canoeing, and the raising of a family. Hurley brings all of those elements together in 'Letters From The Woods.' In fact, I ordered 4 copies (1 for each of my children...and one for me), and on my order I requested that the author autograph them. Not only did he sign each copy, he inscribed a special comment to each of our children and me. His individual remarks were uncanny...it is almost as if he knew each of us...
This is a wonderful book, and I wish Hurley the best of luck in future writing and publishing.

the wholesomeness and inspiration of nature

Like all good nature writing, Hurley's reaches for more than simple narration and description of moments with nature; although these serve as the grounds for the deeper meditations. For Hurley, nature draws out reflections on God's Creation and one's place in the greater scheme of things. But Hurley does not only look beyond himself to see a grandeur nature is the threshold for; he also looks inward to explore how his attachment to nature shaped him throughout his life and instilled in him an sense of closeness to others. "Through these essays I wanted to express to [readers] something of the hidden, eternal meaning of the wilderness through my experiences of it as a child and later as a husband and father." The 33 essays are collected from the author's periodical "Paddle & Portage" which was discontinued when he turned his attention to his law business to support his growing family. Many hazy-edged photographs intermixed with the text put the reader in the mood of the author's writing and evoke experiences with nature.
