It was alright.

This book was not all that bad, it was interesting and I finished it. It did move kind of slow in a lot of parts. It's really just the story of a young hustla named Javon tying to make the switch from drugs to the music biz. Javon's partna Derrick can't see life without the streets, Peaches is a stripper wanna be video ho who wants Javon to put her on. Fatima is an up and coming singer with a troubled past and an incredible voice. All these people's lives are on a colloision course thanks to jealousy and hate.

This book was a slow start and became quite boring. Maybe I expect more from TCP and I didn't get it!

Beyond Money, Power, Respect: Author Deborah Mayer's Latest Tome tells an uplifting story reviewed by Sam Cacas
Love & Loyalty by Deborah Mayer (Triple Crown Publications: Columbus, Ohio 2006), paperback, 258pp.
Where and at what point does one draw the line between love and loyalty? This is a recurrent question that is raised throughout the pages of Deborah Mayer's latest tome. And protagonist Javon Williams faces this fateful question of choice the most as he skirts the contrast between living in the game and trying to go legit.
Seemingly, the choice of the latter would appear to be a no-brainer to most okey-doke, straight-arrow folks out there: how could anyone not feign a lifestyle of being an up and coming record producer with a friend from the past and managing cutting-edge talent? That good life was quite attractive to Javon, as opposed to the game of selling drugs and other hustles - a grind that Javon is tired of.
But like many fateful questions in life, this one has complexities melded into Javon's prior lifetime of hustling - most particularly, his association with his lifelong buddy Derrick and fellow hustler.
A related choice Javon faced was whether to keep it real and stay true to Peaches, his stripper girl (aka Patricia Wells) friend who'd remained loyal to him throughout, or to continue being a playa? Throughout this novel, Javon wanders in and out being a do-right man for Peaches and making more than one play at up-and-coming singer Fatima Amir who reluctantly falls for his seductive - bordering on forceful - sexual quid pro quo while she is trying to sign with his record company.
While Mayer's tome portrays not too uncommon characters and occurrences we urban dwellers have experienced in the game, it is truly alluring and inspiring that she paints all participants in this modern, urban drama in their most humane element: Javon's recurring dream and intention to eventually live a clean life; Peaches' persistent daydream to find a man who doesn't step out on her. Such character shaping sets up the innumerable plot twists throughout this novel and make it a recommended read for those who desire to be enlightened about folks whom the media repeatedly paint as the hopelessly lumpen elements who are a dangerous menace to society. And for telling this story so compellingly, Mayer deserves kudos as well as many, many readers.
