Author Barbara Moss has always said she was born with "the horse gene." As a child, she dreamed of horses and drew them every she chance she had, despite the fact that no one in her household had anything to do with horses. This inborn passion combined with the knowledge she has acquired during nearly twenty years of competition in horse shows makes her an ideal chronicler of the glamorous, exciting, and sometimes seedy world of equestrian competition. Moss’s writing is clear-eyed, wholly realistic, and filled with the kind of authentic details about horses, riding techniques, and business practices that only an insider could provide.
In & Out, Moss’s debut novel and the first in her ambitious Jumping for Gold Series, is set in her hometown of Wellington, Florida, which annually hosts the Winter Equestrian Festival, one of the largest and most prestigious series of competitions held in the U.S. Moss has clearly observed the events, the characters, the horses, and the intrigue that make up such a festival very closely, for she shrewdly brings all these things to life in her fictional narrative.
At the center of her narrative stands the romantic figure of Jericho Brandeis, a talented trainer and rider full of fierce passion, unrealized ambition, and curiosity about his mysterious past. The reader’s first glimpse of Jericho provides a telling view of his character—and of Moss’s own terse yet descriptive style with its undercurrent of erotic implications:
"Mid to later twenties. Tall—just over six feet. Lean and hard—but then sitting on six to eight horses a day and hitting the gym pretty good afterwards would do that. Battered jeans, the seat and inner thighs almost white from saddle wear—hard muscles rippling visibly beneath the well-worn fabric. White tee shirt. Chestnut, sun-streaked hair pulled severely back and braided, the thick end swinging between broad shoulder blades in time with his stride—it would be one hell of a mane, let loose."
The reader immediately sees that Jericho is not merely a rider of horses but a man who is horse-like in his very characteristics, from his rippling muscles to his chestnut "mane" to the wild freedom of his movements. He is a man who can "let loose" at any moment.
The dramatic conflicts of the novel arise from Jericho’s untamed nature, as his stubborn individualism is often at odds with the rules of society’s games. Jericho is drawn to supposedly unbreakable horses, to women who are already spoken for, and to physical confrontations. But he also desires to be known as the best in his chosen field, which means competing successfully in the World Equestrian Games. To reach that goal, however, he must ensure that his unruly passions and destructive impulses do not prevent him from getting his shot.
An intriguing cast of characters surrounds Jericho, including the wealthy patron Bob Marx, the only man who can help Jericho realize his dreams, Marx’s sexy young wife Darien, whose illicit love could become Jericho’s downfall, U.S. Chef d’Equip Chuck Frankel, the closest thing to a father figure Jericho has ever known, hunk bartender Trevor Braeden, Jericho’s friend and rival, and the indomitable stallion Chasseur de Lion, an alluring yet potentially fatal challenge to Jericho’s considerable horsemanship. Jericho must maneuver his way through a hazardous maze of violence, corruption, and seduction if he is to fulfill his aspirations.
In & Out is the kind of novel that will appeal to anyone who loves horses or who simply relishes a well-told tale, full of fascinating characters, romance, incident, and intrigue.
From the Inside Flap
The Ambitious Outsider
Jericho Brandeis has long been a remarkably talented trainer and rider, but his fierce disposition and risky, on-the-edge behavior have always prevented him from securing the necessary financial backing to make a real run at becoming a member of the prestigious U.S. Show Jumping Team. That is—until he meets Bob Marx, a wealthy patron who’s willing to gamble on a good thing when he sees it. Matters, however, become greatly complicated when Jericho falls in love with his patron’s irresistible wife, Darien…
Barbara Moss’s remarkable new novel, In & Out: Year One in the Jumping for Gold Series depicts a fast-paced, morally ambiguous world of money, greed, corruption, competition, and seduction. Jericho discovers that the horses, the women, and the wealthy can all be both fast and dangerous. With his rugged, self-reliant, alpha-male demeanor, Jericho finds himself, time and again, at odds with the rules of society’s high-stakes games. He is the perpetual outsider in a world run by insiders. Driven to reach the pinnacle of his chosen profession, however, his passionate individualism has to be tempered by the spirits of caution and compromise. Throughout the narrative, he remains precariously balanced on this fence, in danger of losing either his dreams or his true self.
In & Out offers more than enough in the way of drama, romance, adventure, and unforgettable characters to hold the reader captivated. It will appeal to all horse lovers and lovers of romance.

Loved the horsey talk, hated the characters
By Crysu
Jerico Brandeis is a Grand Prix level rider who has set his sights on quaifying for the Olympic team and running his training/showing business. He is a cocky, and arrogant personality who has loads of psychoanalyisis to get through. He also has some serious difficulties with women and definitely waffles between viewing them as objects to falling desperately head over heals in love with them. While I agree that this is very stereotypical of trainers in this industry, that's just it... it's a stereotype.
Of course such a self involved individual needs a roommate; welcome Starbucks; this is a character that I think is supposed to be a foil/comedic relief for the story. I hate this guy; he is a former Starbucks employee/ photographer who has the brain of a pea and the looks of a male model. Come on!
Now we get to the conflict. Much of the drama in this book arises from him crossing over professional lines; as in having an affair with his main patron's wife, oh, and getting caught at it, then doing it again and getting her pregnant when the spouse is STERILE (DUH!). This book was pure soap opera drama in the human relations department with a little porn thrown in for flavoring.
The only redeeming value in this book is the depiction of the horses, the jumping and the actual mechanics of the show jumping industry (which was still a bit stereotypical) In terms of the descriptions of the riding and show jumping component, I felt that the book did a good job in giving us a glimpse into that world. Jericho's career was sped up a bit for the sake of the plot line, but you do get a good idea of how hard it is to make it in that world.

In and Out

This is a wonderful book esp. if you are a educated jumper rider. I can't even put it down and have recommended it to many of my other horse friends. The story line and details are right on... it sounds like it is written by someone who has "been there and done that" in Wellington and on the nitty gritty jumper circuit as well as climbing to the top in the horse competition world. I can't wait for another book written by Barbara Moss regarding any story line on the competitive horse world with its background in Wellington and Europe.

Could NOT put this book down..
By classypony
Yes, there's lots of explicit sex. Yes, the clipped writing style of the author bothered me at first but the storyline held me spellbound until the very end. The last few pages will bring a smile to the face of anyone who has been around horses for any length of time. The author knows horses and their way of thinking. The hero is arrogant, compelling, flawed, sensual and believably talented. I loved this book in that I couldn't put it down but hated to finish it. I cannot wait for the next although hopefully the proofreading will be better next time. Hurry up Barbara, I'm waiting.
