Introduction
Why? Nudes are a frequent subject in many arts but the shyness people feel about nudity makes finding subjects for practice or professional work problematic. By focusing on nudes, this book provides a much needed reference of a difficult to obtain subject.
How? Of course, scarce subject matter alone does not make a good book. In addition, there should be: • High quality, detailed photographs • Interesting subjects • Multiple angles • Large prints • Full color throughout • Natural poses • Some whimsical poses Those were our objectives. We included a variety of models, poses and layouts, different body types and male/female comparisons. Since this is our first book, we hoped to stimulate suggestions by presenting a range of options so you could tell us what you liked and did not like and what you found useful.
Who? For those working in a two dimensional medium, multiple angles allow you to select just the view you like. For those working in three dimensions, having views from multiple angles is essential. Looking down on the model also helps by revealing valleys that would otherwise be obscured. Art groups or university art classes may find this book particularly useful. With the photos on CD and a projector attached to a computer, the photos could be projected lifesized. Between sessions, the book would act as a reminder and reference.
Organization of the book Live Model Book One is organized into thematic chapters with similar poses together. The first section of the book gives side-by-side comparisons of Jessica and Jennifer then Frank and Jessica. The goal of this was to highlight differences between two female models and between a female and male model. In the next section, three different ways of sitting are contrasted from stately to sexy and with backgrounds from cool blue to smoldering red. In this case, the comparison is less direct as each position is presented in full rotation rather than side-by-side. With the exception of some just-for-fun poses by Jessica in chapter five, each pose was photographed from eight directions. The model was asked to remain still after the first photo was taken while the posing platform was rotated and another picture taken every 45 degrees. One thing to note is that the light sources for each photo remain fixed in the studio so that, as the platform is rotated, the model’s orientation to them changes. We also experimented with different lighting, sometimes with good effect, other times with questionable results. We leave it to you to decide which are which. But if you have an opinion on the subject- please, send us an e-mail. Most chapters also contain close-up details. These typically appear after the rotation and show a long shot followed by corresponding close-ups on succeeding pages. These photos were taken at the same distance as the rotation photos but we used an optical zoom to capture more detail. Often, there is more background than model in the photos. The reason for this is that once a session began, the camera and the model remained stationary for a complete rotation. This required including the maximum height and width that would be seen in any of the eight directions. At times, you may find the formatting and layout to be a bit rough. When there was a choice between pretty formatting versus more and larger photos, the photos won out.
A note on modesty. We have struggled with the question of whether or not to censor the female photos. Throughout the production of the book we have been guided by a principle: "Do not interpret". By that we mean, it is the privilege of the artist to interpret the photos and to provide meaning. We tried to present an accurate photo with as little editorial content as possible. Therefore, we leave it to the artists to decide what they consider a reasonable subject of art. To do that, we had to leave the photos uncensored. Essential reference

This is an excellent resource for artists and particularly for sculptors. The book is well laid out and provides clear color shots which are well lit with neutral backgrounds. The models are posed in comfortable and natural gestures which do not seem contrived or forced. There are also excellent references with male and female comparisons of the same pose, shot from multiple angles.
So many other figure reference guides are stale poses from one view. Not so, here. Each pose is photographed from various points 360 degrees around the model which provides excellent appeal to artists working in a three-dimensional medium.
The included CD is a gem and provides higher resolution images that are clearer then the print versions, and can even be accessed through most image editing software like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.
Another great feature of the book is it's spiral bound. Any working artist in a studio can attest this as an excellent feature. For hands-free reference while drawing or painting this is incredibly useful. One idea came to mind to prop the book up some distance away and view it from the vantage point where the model would be, were they actually in the studio. Other binding would make this difficult to set up.
Anyone serious about figure drawing without access to live models should find this to be an invaluable resource. Even artists with regular access to life models will find this book useful to fill in the areas where a fifteen-minute pose, or access to a single angle, are just too limited.

Happy with it

I liked the variety of models and there is an adequate number of poses. The color printing is not always great but having the photos on CD is awesome. I thought there was a good mix of natural and 'artsty' poses and you can adapt them to make your own compositions See the drawing above.
It works for drawing practice or just as a figure study/reference pose book. Could also be helpful for illustrators.

Good starter book if the lighting was corrected

The book doesn't have too many poses, however, it has several poses as seen from different angles(8 in all) which is helpful. However, the lighting on the models and the quality of print is so bad, that all images appear extremely flat.
