Kick Me While I'm Down
By Jennifer Coissiere "The Tough Critic"
I had no clue of the whirlwind ride I would embark on once I opened the cover of Sheila Peele-Miller's Prey for the Wicked. My emotions were all over the place as I delved deeper and deeper into the life of the main character, Janeen Cooper. A natural reaction for a reader, who is a mother, will be to protect Janeen while saying "poor baby."

If Janeen knew nothing else, the love of her mother, Helen, was emblazoned in her heart and mind. That is why once her mother died, Janeen slowly began to lose her drive to do anything. She has to leave school and the one person she has to turn to is the very person her mother told her to never go to for help. May, her mother's older sister, seemed to be angry with Janeen for some reason or another. During her first moments in May's house, Janeen meets Adam Sinclair, the sheriff of the North Carolina town where her mother grew up and the place she never wanted her to go to. What about this town was Helen trying to keep Janeen from?

There is something very mysterious about Adam that Janeen cannot figure out. During their strange courtship an unexpected trail of events happens causing Janeen to leave North Carolina in a hurry. Things go from bad to worse, causing Janeen to make some not so wise choices. Even though she was no longer in North Carolina, Adam and everything that happened to her was not too far from her mind. Needing to know exactly what happened Janeen heads back to where she came from. What will she find out? Will she finally be able to have the happiness her mother wanted for her?

I flew through Prey for the Wicked. The naiveté of Janeen at first had me wondering if she was going to be foolish throughout the entire story. As the book progressed, I found it hard to put the book down due to Janeen's determination to do what she wanted at that moment. Just when I believed I could exhale something else would happen causing me to use some choice words while shaking my head. It is a good thing the characters were all well developed, since this was a character-driven story. There were some editing mishaps, but the story was good from the beginning to the end. I recommend Prey for the Wicked to readers of drama and suspense.

I received a copy of this book for review from the author.

(3.5 Stars) Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God
By Urban Reviews
Is it human nature to take advantage of people just because they let you? I have heard people say, "If she let it happen, then she deserves it." Does a naïve 20-year-old who has lost her mother at an early age and has very little experience regarding life deserve it? Someone in Williamston, North Carolina believes she does.

Janeen's mom passed away suddenly, and her life becomes a tornado of ups and downs. Accustomed to her mother taking care of everything for her, Janeen is left with her rent in arrears, utilities being turned off, and an eviction notice on her apartment in Greenville, NC. With nowhere else to go, she relocates to the place she was told not to return...Williamston, NC.

She calls her mother's sister, Aunt May, only to find a bitter, greedy old bitty who at every turn puts Janeen down but never forgets to collect the $300 rent she is charging her to stay in one of her rooms. Knowing in her heart that this is just a temporary fix, Janeen deals with the lip service from Aunt May by staying in her room and out of her way. But unfortunately, it doesn't matter what Janeen does because family history is playing against her and her relationship with Aunt May...a family history she has no control over nor can she change.

On the day Janeen moved in, she received a little bit of sunshine by ways of the handsome Sheriff Adam Sinclair. Her inner voice warns her in the words of her mother; "Stay away from high yellow men." But her mother never explained the statement, and when she needed it, she couldn't take heed to it. In Janeen's mind, skin has nothing to do with how cute a man was.

Settling in at Aunt May's, Janeen finds that all is not what it seems. Family secrets are used to hurt her and empower another. Her naïve ways are used against her by those who claim to love her. When she is pushed too far, the wicked find that sometimes love is the very thing that you draw strength from and the naïve will no longer be prey.

Sheila Peele-Miller has done a good job with the characterization in Prey For The Wicked. The situations assigned to each character were well thought out and complemented one another. Delivery of the plot was well served, but I had a small problem with the time it took to bring the situations to closure. But all in all. Prey For The Wicked was a good story and absolutely worth the read.

Hell has no fury...
By Minnie E Miller
Prey for the Wicked, A novel By Sheila Peele-Miller

Sheila Peele-Miller is a storyteller. "Prey for the Wicked" proves it. Janeen, the protagonist, mourns the death of her mother throughout the novel causing her to lose control of your life.

She meets Sheriff Sergeant Adam Sinclair and thinks she's in love giving him her all. But Adam is not her hero. He has problems as well.

Janeen and Adam's fire slowly dims.

With no one to turn to in her needs, she gets involved with heavy drugs, alcohol, and worthless men. Finding no satisfaction there, she attempts suicide, twice.

And as if the devil decides to punish Janeen even further, she learns while recovering from an accident during a horseback ride that she is pregnant. She immediately knows it's Adam's baby. He denies it, panicking at the thought, telling her to have an abortion, even arranges it. She steadfastly refuses and brings a child into their confused and dismal world.

Janeen tries to clean up her life and take care of her child. Both of Baby Justin's parents love him much. Someone kidnaps Baby Justin. Their distrust of each other becomes clear when Janeen and Adam accuse each other of killing the child. Sheriff Adam threatens to kill her, telling her to get out of town. She has no doubt that he can kill her and leaves.

Janeen, with nowhere to lay her head, ends up in a fleabag motel in another state, and heads for the nearest liquor store. Again, she gets involved with a worthless critter willing to provide her with drugs and abuses her in the worse way.

As if a gift from heaven, Collette befriends her and tells her the truth about her life. She warns that she must face her problems that drugs, men, and attempt suicides will result in a bad ending to her life.

But there's more, much more to this novel. Adam comes back into Janeen's life. Just when you think Janeen and Adam are about to solve their problems, Sheila Peele-Miller writes yet another bizarre twist to the story. I can't tell you what. You must read this story!

In my humble opinion, the novel could have done without some of the unnecessary words and scenes. Still, it is a good story. I consider it Sheila's trademark brand personalities, which I've learned from reading three of her novels -- "Painted Picture," "Daylight Coming," and now "Prey for the Wicked." My mind tells me a sequel is coming!
I can squeeze out four stars for "Prey for the Wicked."
