About the Author
Samsum Kashfi was born in Estahban, Iran in 1955. His first poems were published in his high school newsletter. In 1973, when he entered university, he began his literary efforts by writing a series of literary reviews and programs for radio. But poetry is his true love and he considers himself an eternal student of the school of poetry. Kashfi immigrated to Canada in 1987 and since then he has been very active in promoting Iranian culture outside of the country and campaigning for freedom of expression and thought in Iran.

Useful San Francisco Bay Area Long Term Care Guide

This is a very useful, objective resource guide for finding the best in long term care (LTC) options in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area (apparently the East Bay has a separate guide and I believe the Guide is expanding to other cities, as well). The guide is a comprehensive overview of all of the local LTC services and facilities; chapter One describes the various functions of home care, geriatric care management, adult day care, assisted living facilities, continuing care communities, skilled nursing facilities and hospice, specifying what each does and what to expect.

Chapter Two is particulary useful, in that it describes "who pays for what" - listing different ways of paying for LTC, costs and eligibility requirements of various forms of coverage, and which facilities and services accept which form of payment. It even lists local phone numbers.

The rest of the Guide is by County: San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin and Southern Napa and Sonoma Counties. (As someone who covers all of Napa and Sonoma counties, this was my only frustration - not having the northern areas covered). Each listing includes detailed information, including costs, unique qualities and a personalized in-depth review.

The Guide is appropriate and useful for both professionals and family members overwhelmed by choices. I hope they are able to expand into other communities - there is a real need for objective, thorough and informational, locally-based guides to long term care options.

Finally, a resource that offers an unbiased, independent view of senior living facilities in the Bay Area. Thanks for the hours of hard work put in researching and writing. Content is great. The one problem with the book is the binding - I've never seen a book where the pages falls apart so easily ! And within the first few days of very gentle use! I've had to tape about 30 or so pages back. No big deal, considering there really isn't any substitute for the book, and it's a gem. Kudos to the Gilbert family for the whole idea of putting together a resource book like this. This book is now out of print, and as far as I know, the Gilbert Guide has been bought by another company. Hopefully they'll continue the good work.

Excellent guide for locating assisted living facilities

I purchased this book after seeing a copy from a friend. It's a must book to have if you're looking for an assisted living facility for a loved one. Great description of the many facilities in S.F. and the peninsula. There's a desperate need to have more of these books throughout the country.

Only drawback is that the listed prices of the assisted living facilities are now out-dated. Prices are now higher than what was quoted in the book. Therefore there's a need to keep this updated annually if at all possible.

About the Author
Scott Bourne is an award-winning photographer who is known for his use of color, shape and form. He is a pioneer in the digital imaging field.

His photographic career started in the early 1970s as a stringer covering motor sports for Associated Press in Indianapolis. Since then, he has shot commercial, portrait, wedding, magazine and fine art assignments. His widely divergent patrons and clients include United States Congressman Adam Smith and actor/director Leonard Nimoy.

Scott regularly lectures on a variety of photo and media-related subjects. He has appeared on national television and radio shows and has written columns for several national magazines, including Net Guide and Nature Photographer. Scott is the host of Photofocus Radio and has also been named Contributing Editor for Photovision Magazine.

Awesome

This book should be required reading for every officer in the training academy. Dr Smith hits the nail right on the head. If cadets read this book they might be able to address their mental health problems before they manifest and start causing problems. If you are in law enforcement long enough those problems will be there.

I recently heard Bobby Smith's presentation and bought his book. I've been a police officer for 34 years. Bobby touched my heart with his understanding of what a cop goes through every day. Read this book and hear his story. If you're a police officer, or love one, it could change your life.

About the Author
Bill Dutcher would like to be rich and famous, but not for the same thing. He is working on the former as an independent oil and gas producer in Oklahoma City, and on the latter as the creator of Fictoids. After receiving a BA in journalism from the University of Oklahoma, he served in the Navy, worked briefly as a newspaper reporter, then drifted into the oil and gas business. He began writing Fictoids in 1998, as comic relief from the stress of his high-risk day job.

What, you may ask, is a "fictoid?" Well, as author and fellow Okie Bill Dutcher explains, a fictoid is a fictional factoid, and Dutcher provides a delightful plethora of them in his fun book entitled (of course) FICTOIDS. As an example:

"Since 1994, commuters entering Manhattan in car pools have been required to use bridges instead of tunnels, due to rising health concerns over car pool tunnel syndrome."

Hey, that's funny, I don't care who you are! Dutcher gives us a history of fictoids, going all the way back to 1224 BC. Most are witty, a few rather lame, but all of them entertain. And Dutcher, a former journalist, can sure manipulate the English language with some outstanding adjectives (for example, "Pugnacious Palooka, the pusillanimous pugilist"), which makes the book a fun read in and of itself. FICTOIDS is guaranteed to prompt a smile or two, along with some well-deserved giggles.

Hilarious fictional facts

This is really funny. In a world overtaken by reality shows, fictoids is the revenge of fiction over facts. The book brings plausible and short explanations to the surrealism of the world surrounding us.

Funny fictional factoids

In the introduction, a fictoid is described as "...a bit of fictional history, maiking a statement or telling a story in one sentence." Fictoids are also witty and humorous, although some of them were over my head as I didn't understnand the reference. The ones I did get made me smile. Each page in this book is basically a one-liner, making it perfect for a lazy beach/pool reading if one doesn't want to concentrate too long on a novel or book. One I liked was: "In 1754, Philadelphia accountant and habitial procrastinator Joseh P. Fiscal had fallen six months behind in his work, and looking for a way to catch up, invented what is now known as the Fiscal Year."

About the Author
Caleb Quaye was born and raised in London, England. On his paternal side, he is descended from four generations of musicians, extending back to Ghana, West Africa. During the late sixties and the seventies, he was a well-known studio musician, as well as Elton John's guitarist for ten years. An ordained minister, he is the founder of New World Music Ministries, Inc., based in West Covina, California.

It happened on October 9, 1979, my thirtieth birthday. I had been on the road with Hall & Oates for six months straight. We played the Omni Theatre in Atlanta and after the concert, the band threw a surprise party for me back in my hotel room. The roadies brought in cake, booze, women and cocaine and we just all went nuts until around five in the morning. When it finally ended, I was left alone in my hotel room. I sat there in a chair, just cooling off before getting into bed. I wasn't thinking about anything in particular, when all of a sudden I heard a voice. It was a voice I had never heard before and it was so loud and so clear that it seemed to come from inside of me and from outside of me at the same time.

"Caleb," the voice said, "from this point on, your life is going to be completely different. Nothing is going to be the same for you ever again."

I snapped up straight and said, "Who's that?" The voice was so clear that I actually turned around to see who was standing behind me. The only thing behind me was the hotel window -- we were on the ninth floor of the Omni Hotel.

I had no idea who the voice belonged to but I knew something significant had happened. I made a promise to myself to find out more but I didn't know where to start. I had grown up in the church and I had attended Anglican Church schools but with all the fancy sermons I had heard condemning every kind of sin, I had never heard the gospel preached. I was never told that I could have a personal relationship with God or with Jesus. I knew God was out there somewhere -- I was never an atheist -- but I didn't know what it meant to have a relationship with God.

What An Awesome Book

"A Voice Louder Than Rock And Roll" is a spellbinding book. You can tell that Mr. Quaye has written from the depths of his soul. A personal account of how Jesus saved him from the pitfalls of addiction and "the glamourous life", Caleb Quaye hold the reader's attention and never lets go. Every word is the gospel truth! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is sycophantic and thinks that the music business is the hottest thing since sliced bread. "A Voice Louder Than Rock And Roll" delivers a dose of reality needed by today's youth. Let your teenagers read this book. They'll be amazed. I pray that this message reaches those people who are looking for love in all the wrong places. I pray his message brings them to the only one who can truly save them from themselves. And that is Jesus Christ!

A Message Louder Than That

Caleb Quaye has been a Guitar god for most of rock n roll since the first few bars of "There Goes A Well Known Gun" on the Elton John "Tumbleweed Connection" recording from the early seventies. In "A Voice Louder Than Rock n Roll" he uses his background and upbringing, along with his teenage friendship with Reg Dwight as a backdrop to his much needed and exciting conversion to a new way of life. In spite of the lights, cameras and action of drug abuse, the arena show lifestyle and his quest for fame, Caleb found true meaning for his life in the salvation of Jesus Christ. It was a joy to read, as I could hardly put it down. The rare photos and history of all things Elton coupled with the perfect ending made for a most enjoyable read.

Quaye emerges from the ruins to do God's work!

There are many people who have found Jesus Christ overnight, only to lose him within a short span of time. In other words, it was a fad to them, or a shortlived repentance for a depraved lifestyle. An example of that might be the criminal who suddenly finds the Lord in prison. In 1979, the Lord spoke to Quaye and he has been listening ever since, now traveling the world spreading God's word through his music ministry. "A Voice Louder Than Rock and Roll" thoroughly shows us Quaye's journey, from his glamourous, rock and roll lifestyle as Elton John's guitarist in the 1970s, to his long fall into drug abuse, and finally to his spiritual transformation in a hotel room while on tour with Hall and Oates. Quaye, who authored the book with writer Dale Berryhill, is candid, thoughtful and inspirational. A great book for anyone who wants to know how Jesus Christ can bring you back from the brink of total destruction.. or worse.
