This is the story of an 18 year old boy who left his family and fled his native Vienna to Holland. There, as an illegal refugee, he was imprisoned in the state prizon at Veenhuizen, where he wrote a diary relating his experiences in 1938 in Vienna and Holland. The book goes on to tell of his survival during the war working on Dutch farms, acquiring forged documents from the underground, and hiding in Charlotte van Dijk's home in Utrecht from late 1942 onward. He even worked for the Dutch Psychotecnic Foundation in Utrect in 1943. His employers knew that he was a Jew and did not turn him in. The diary ends on December 31, 2938, with the question:" Where will I be next New Year's Eve?" The memoir completes this dramatic story.

Chilling and timely

The author's account of his own escape from Nazi run Vienna and his years in hiding in Holland create a suspenseful narrative that provides us with an insight into the personal struggle for existance during the World War II era. The reader will feel the tension of living beneath the noses of the SS as each day brings with it the chance of being revealed by a neighbor, collaborator or simply someone out to earn a few guilders. Yet Dan Kampelmacher remianed defiant, refusing to wear the yellow star under penalty of death. This is both a page-turner and a resource for scholars of the period. Not to be missed!

Linda Austin wrote and published her mother's memoir of growing up in Japan around WWII and became a fan of lifewriting. Her mother now suffers from Alzheimer's, but she enjoys listening to stories and songs of her childhood. Linda encourages others via her Moonbridgebooks.com website to write their stories or that of their elders as legacy gifts for their families. She believes poetry can be a form of lifewriting, too.

Bittersweet

If ever you've loved someone with alzheimer's or other dementia, read this bittersweet book of poems. They capture the essence perfectly. My Dad had alzheimer's, and even though he died several years ago, the pain of his decline is still fresh. And so, it was with both dread and anticipation that i read this book. I need not have worried: It elevates; it forgives; it describes, without being sentimental. The book is not long. Yes, I cried.

Poems that Tug on Your Heartstrings

Though the title states that the poems are for those who love someone with dementia, anyone who has gone through the experience of watching a loved one slip away will be able to relate to these poems as well. Linda Austin has a wonderful way of expressing the frustration, fear and loneliness of dealing with this debilitating disease while at the same time accepting with joy the times when we catch a glimpse of the person we used to know - and who used to know us. I highly recommend this book for anyone dealing with a dementia patient, and it would make a thoughtful gift for caregivers as well.

Profound Brevity

If you love someone with dementia, or even if you simply love haiku, I highly recommend this beautiful book that not only covers dementia, but life in general. Austin's poetry is as poignant as it is profound. I've read many of them over and over, to once again feel what power can come from so few words. I'm not exaggerating when I say that several of the poems were breathtaking.

Beautifully captures life in the wetlands

The "Here is..." series of books featuring animals in their natural habitats by author Madeleine Dunphy are well-written and educational. Most are also beautifully illustrated with vibrant full-color pictures which enhance the cumulative verse style employed by the author.

In "Here is the Wetland", readers are introduced to the animals that inhabit the wetlands, specifically the freshwater marsh. Some of these animals include the muskrat, mink, bass, heron, frog, snake, blackbirds, coots, ducks, etc. The cumulative style employed here makes this book a perfect read-aloud for young children (ages 4-8), and may also motivate beginning/intermediate readers. My five-and-a-half-year old daughter enjoyed reading this book, and was entranced by the rich life in the wetlands, not to mention the detailed and vivid illustrations of wetland animals. Highly recommended for children ages 4-8.

I quite enjoyed reading this with kids, and they enjoyed repeating and memorizing the words. The illustrations are lovely and provide plenty to talk about.

About the Author
Author Marian Girardi suddenly passed away in January of 2005, shortly after approving the cover design of her book.

Although she will no longer be able to experience the satisfaction of teaching clinicians or of helping balance-disordered and falls-risk patients, her legacy of compassionate caring, particularly for the elderly, will be forever preserved through the publication and distribution of this book.

Even though she will be sorely missed by her friends and colleagues, her writing ensures that Dr. Marian Girardi will always live on because her words will help improve the quality of life for people all over the world for many, many years to come.

Seems meager for the price

I'm a neurologist, and have been performing VNG testing. I refer patients to a nearby therapist, and we are working to put together a dizziness diagnosis and treatment program. I bought this book (English version) to expand my knowledge of vestibular rehabilitation. This is basically a workbook, and there is relatively little information on when and why you should use specific exercises. Disappointing.

Clear and simple (too simple?)

This book would be useful for PTs who are seeking specific exercises patients with vestibular disorders can perform to rehabilitate their balance and gaze control. It has discrete and clear exercises on each page which could be copied for the patient to take home and follow step-by-step. The book is very easy to follow and it is practical, but lacks background information concerning the various exercises, e.g., concerning efficacy of each exercise, the science behind the exercises, and exactly how the exercises work to achieve rehabilitation. This short text is best as a workbook once the practitioner has already become family with a more comprehensive text.

About the Author
Ben Logan traveled as a merchant seaman, and worked many years as a novelist, producer and writer of films and television, and lecturer, while living forty miles north of New York City. Yet his roots remained in the southwestern driftless area of Wisconsin. He returned to his childhood farm, Seldom Seen, in the mid-1980s, and has lived there ever since. Ben was born and raised on the farm and attended Seneca High School before studying journalism at UW-Platteville and UW-Madison. He spent 4 1/2 years in the navy during WWII on amphibious landing craft in combat in North Africa and Italy. After the war, Ben worked as a merchant seaman in Europe and South America, then returned to Wisconsin to complete his master's degree. Further travels took him to Mexico to study anthropology and creative writing. In Mexico, he met his wife. From 1960-1985, Ben was senior producer for United Methodist Communications in New York state. He won an Emmy award for best-written documentary film, Taking Children Seriously, which aired on NBC-TV in 1986. UW-Platteville gave him the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1984. His book, The Land Remembers, was published in 1975, and is now in its eighth edition. It is something of a phenomenon, and has sold nearly half a million copies. In the latest edition, two original chapters have been reunited with the story, and included in a new Afterword that brings his story about growing up on a farm in the '30s full-circle, back to the land and its people. The birth of that land, like the birth of the planet, is beyond our comprehension. We can theorize about cosmic dust, planetary collisions, rivers of molten rock, land rising out of the sea to be worn down again by wind and water, but how real is all that compared to the feel of the morning sun on the face, the smell of the seasons changing, the sight of the new green springing from the soil? Ben also wrote The Empty Meadow in 1983 and Christmas Remembered.

The Land Remembers

A wonderful, heartwarming story of early farm life written so well that even if you have never lived on a farm, it is easy to put oneself on that ridgetop farm in Southwest Wisconsin.

For some reason, the cd will not play in my car cd player. I sent the first copy back thinking it might have been a fluke, but the second copy will not play in my car either. If someone has a suggestion, please let me know.
