In 1981, the 16th Karmapa—leading lama of the Karma Kagyu branch of Tibetan Buddhism—died. In a highly biased but fascinating account, first-time author Curren describes the controversy over the Karmapa's succession that still rages today. After the 16th Karmapa's death, two different factions arose, each naming a different boy the 17th Karmapa: Ogyen Trinley, supported by several Karma Kagyu leaders and the Dalai Lama, and Trinley Thaye, whom the second-ranking Kama Kagyu lama, Shamar Rinpoche, believes to be the true Karmapa. While most previous accounts of the controversy have favored Ogyen Trinley, Curren—who acknowledges early on that he is a student of Shamar Rinpoche—believes Ogyen Trinley to be a fraud. Curren is quite critical of the Dalai Lama, suggesting that His Holiness should never have gotten involved in the dispute to begin with. The bulk of the book lays out the power struggles and court battles that have marked the succession controversy. Unfortunately, Curren's journalistic account is not only highly partial but often badly written, filled with melodrama and purple prose. It will please Trinley Thaye and Shamar Rinpoche's partisans, but it is too one-sided to truly illuminate the Karmapa controversy. (Dec.)

Erik D. Curren, Ph.D. has served as a communications and political consultant to such organizations as the State of California, Hill and Knowlton, Well Fargo Bank, and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Research for this book took him to India, Nepal, and Tibet for interviews with lamas, monks, and government officials involved in this crisis.

Divide and Conquer - an unfolding tragedy

I was a bit skeptical of this book at first because of the nature of this partisan controversy, and the investigative reporter style of writing, yet pretty quickly I was taken in and fully absorbed. I'm a long time student of Tibetan Buddhism, but am not much interested or involved in the Kagyu Lineage, yet by the end of this book I was feeling both well informed and passionate about the subject (I really look forward to being able to meet Thaye Dorje Karmapa some day).

This book appears to be well researched and documented (lots of fascinating historical details and insider accounts), as well as including some helpful pictures, appendices, chronology of events and glossary, and it reads like a leCarre' novel at times - engrossing, convoluted, outrageous and impossible to put down. This is a side of Tibetan culture most Western devotees and outsiders are unaware of, yet this autocratic approach is at the root of how and why Tibet fell to the communists in '59.

My reading experience alternated between disgust, fascination, delight and sadness; sadness for everyone involved, delight that the wizard's curtain was finally being pulled back, fascination to see the utter petty humanness of it all, and disgust to learn of a few so-called "high" Lamas who's debased motives and involvement have led to such a split in the religious community. And this isn't simple political power grabbing, it involves high crimes of treason (to the Kagyu lineage), theft, assault (beatings, killings, & assasinations), forgery, bribery and deceit....

This book appears to be the most unbiased and informative account written so far about this controversy (On further study I discover a couple of the more horrible/outrageous aspects of the story were left out, probably for liability reasons.). It will probably interest a wide range of curious and intelligent readers, but for Tibetan Buddhists, especially Karma Kagyu followers, it is essential reading. I could easily list the dozen or so basic points of the controversy for you, but that would spoil your reading experience. No matter whether you have taken sides already, or never will, this book is worth reading. After all the horrors exposed here (both historic and current), this book amazingly left me on an upbeat note - the possibility of reconciliation. As Thaye Dorje Karmapa says, this will pass, the controversy will eventually be resolved as similar ones have in the past, and the dharma (truth) is too strong to be harmed. I hope he is right. And I hope we all learn something...and allow ourselves to be changed by this unchanging dharma.

So far, the best of the best

I have been reading dispassionately all of the books regarding the controversy surrounding the Karmapas. I am not a Buddhist so I don't have a predetermined opinion about any of them. I have a couple more books on this issue to read but so far this book is the most comprehensive look at the controversy despite the author's admitted bias for one of the Karmapas. He still tries to address all of the angles and be as fair as possible. I couldn't put this book down it had so much relevant information that so far is not discussed in the others I have read. He also looks at the books already written since his was released in 2006 so it provides another look at other books and where they might disagree or agree.

He has done extensive interviews with various parties and he attempted to include others on the other side who apparently refused (or couldn't work it in their schedule) to discuss the issues. I was impressed with what "Karmapa" Trinlay Thaye Dorje had to say about this entire controversy at the end of the book. He sounds like he is level headed and certainly ready to reach out to the modern world in which he finds himself. He also is interested in talking with "Karmapa" Orgyen Trinley Rinpoche and seeing if they can resolve this issue in some reasonable way. But, in any case, Trinlay Thaye Dorje doesn't seem caught up in the "tradition" but more interested in spreading the message of Buddhism rather than the fanfare. This should be interesting to watch. But---A great book! Thanks Mr. Curren!

Truth over Protocol.

The Teaching (a/k/a Dharma) is of vastly greater importance than the person who transmits it, however "high" they may be.

That notion somehow shines for me through this book, although it forces me to realize that the "smell" of some transmissions may be clerical twaddle rather than IT.

Read this book if you like shining your flashlight where others think it does not belong.

Be a lamp unto yourself. Don't let the twaddle discourage you.

I guess I expectated more depth in this book. I bought a related book, The Creative Community Builder's Handbook, and that book gave me more I guess what I was looking for. Heart offers some excellent photography, so if people are looking to examine how detailed a community project should be, then this might be the right book for them.

Piero Scaruffi studied Mathematics and Physics, but has recently focused his research on subjects related to Cognitive Science. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard and Stanford, lectured in three continents, published several books, and pioneered practical applications of Artificial Intelligence. THE reference book on consciousness

The breadth and depth of knowledge of Scaruffi is impressive.
It seems hard to believe that the volume is the work of a single author!
Even those who fail to read the nearly six hundred pages will find here important references in fields far from their specialization.
It is rare that you have very deep knowledge in sometimes distant fields (for example, neurology and theoretical physics). Scaruffi leaves no stone unturned. If a particular point of view seems important to the reader, the ' further readings' section (at the end of every chapter) is precious.
Quoting Albert Einstein "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Scaruffi did understand the 'state of the art' in modern consciousness studies well enough, and this is really something. Strongly reccomended.

I read the first chapter, and feared I would be lost in it for what could be weeks without coming up for air. I have now put it away from myself until I go on holidays, at which time it will be the first thing in the bag.

A Great book with a simple but annoying flaw

I am a lay reader, retired computer programmer and a lifetime reader of history, science and, most recently, brain science.
I bought this book in my quest for understanding of what the experts think about how we think. The title was all I went on, thinking this was one persons’ theory of how we achieve consciousness.
To my surprise (and pleasure) the book turned out to be a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of consciousness by all the thinkers of note in the fields of neuroscience and philosophy.
As a bonus, each scientist’s theories are preceded by a short history of the development of the theory by predecessors. This is why the book’s name should be “A Survey of Consciousness Theory”.
The flaw. As brilliant as the author seems to be, given the explanations of really complex theories and concepts, he insists on referring to American scientists as “USA scientists”, instead of American scientists throughout the book. Yet for all other nationalities he uses the proper designation, such as the Mexican neuroscientist, the German philosopher, the French scientist. I requested Kindle support run a simple ‘find/replace” on the book file (just mine, if necessary) but it was denied.
I hope read the book again, but will wait until the flaw is fixed.

Not just for kids...

The True Story of Critter Angels by Yani is one of those wonderful books that crossover between childhood and adulthood. The experience of loss is universal, and Shendl Diamond's sensitive text and delightful illustrations easily elicit strong feelings in adults as well. I lent my copy to a 60 year old friend who has been a pet lover her whole life and she was soon crying, with a beautiful smile on her face at the same time, saying "This is so wonderful!" The book is appropriate whether or not the reader has a religious background, as the idea of "angels" provides a powerful metaphor independent of any particular belief system. I know this is a book I will be giving again and again, knowing it will be able to work it's magic, honoring pet loss and comforting the griever.

This book is a must have for parents and children dealing with pet loss

I received this book as a gift for Christmas in 2005. The book is beautifully written from the pets perspective. Near the end of the book there are spaces for you to place photos of your own "Critter Angels". A nice touch to help us remember our pets when they do pass away. My oldest cat Pearl is almost 15 and she will probably not be with us much longer. When Pearl does pass away I know that this book will help my children and myself deal with the loss of a pet who has been a part of our lives for so many years.

This sweet book reminds us all of angels in our lives. The pets used in this book so beautifully reminded me of not only how healing our own dogs have been to my family, but also how healing friends and family can be too. The book is great all around for reminding us to all cherish those angels in our lives, no matter what form they come in. This book is touching, sweet and poignant.

The author sets up the bible study in a great, organized format which is easy to follow and is very thorough, but which also truly prepares your heart to delve into God's word and get the most out of it. When I ordered this study, I wasn't even certain that I NEEDED spiritual revival - I just knew I needed a daily format to keep me on track. But it has been an amazing study, and God has used it mightily in my life. On days when I am feeling completely broken, I open to that day's study - and the study is on brokenness. On days when I am feeling convicted of my shortcomings, the study for that day is on repentance and forgiveness. It has truly been amazing. I have never, in my Christian walk, been good about maintaining a consistent daily quiet time and bible study - but that has all changed now. I have a new passion and love for the word of God, and I look forward every day to seeing what the Lord has for me in His word through this bible study. I highly recommend it to ANYONE - whether you THINK you are in need of revival or not!

If anyone is thirsty, come and drink...

This Bible study book has led me on a wonderful journey deeper into the heart of God. Filled with quotes by A.W. Tozer, Charles Spurgeon, Hannah Whitehall Smith, Amy Carmicheal and others, plus Hymns such as "The Old Rugged Cross" that inpsire and encourage; the author continually points to God's Word for filling a thirsty soul and growing in a walk with Christ. I'm buying her other books. God bless you!
