Stunning

Bill Booz has created a truly remarkable collection of natural fine art photography. The photos and delightful text capture the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains ranging from breathtaking landscapes to sublime close up shots. On a personal note, having hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, this has become my treasured book of professional photos.

I highly recommend this book for several reasons. This is a book for those who appreciate excellent photography. It is far less expensive than most coffee table books, but the quality of photos meets or exceeds larger format books. It is a useful collection of photos for educational purposes. Finally, those who have spent time or dream of spending time in the Appalachian Mountains will thoroughly enjoy this book.

Over the Top and Back Again

Many travel books entice readers to follow in the writer's footsteps. Bryson and Theroux have contributed to a global rise in train and towpath travel and Paolo Coelho's `Pilgrimage' and Hape Kerkeling's "I'm off Then" sent thousands of copy-cat peregrinos from Brazil and Germany onto the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail in Spain. This latest offering from Brandon Wilson could start an avalanche of adventure hikers on the Via Alpina!
But, for someone who suffers from vertigo at the top of an escalator, this book had the complete opposite affect on me! The constant use of those `F-words" gave me goose-bumps - freezing, frigid, frost....brrrr! And those terrifying `P-words' - perilous, precarious, precipice - combined with words like ledge, ladders and chains - were enough for me to make up my mind that if I ever got itchy feet to trek the Via Alpina, I would chain myself to a deck chair in Siberia, feet dunked in a below freezing ice-hole, until the feeling passed.
Brandon and his intrepid wife Cheryl had a narrow 4 month window in which to trek 1200 miles of the Via Alpina, crossing 8 countries, climbing 3000ft from valley to mountain every day in rain, sleet, frost, snow, thunderstorms, howling gales, white-out fog, mud, scree slopes, shifting shale, landslides and disappearing tracks. This took some serious trekking (only one day off in the first three weeks) and like the Grand Old Duke of York, they marched up one hill (in this case an Alpine Mountain) and down again every day for 110 days. Brandon's engaging style swept me along on this razor-tooth, roller coaster trek and at times I could smell the spring herbs, and their sweaty socks!
I have the greatest respect for the wandering Wilsons who have hunted dik-dik in Africa (Dead Men Don't Leave Tips), been shot at in Tibet (Yak Butter Blues) and ducked bombs on his way to Jerusalem (Along the Templar Trail). This latest adventure was a monumental feat, even for a strong, healthy man, but especially for the injured Cheryl who soldiered up every mountain rock-face and down excruciating ascents with a knee injury, climbing the equivalent of a dozen Mt. Everests from sea level. Imagine for a moment that Edmund Hillary wrote in `View from the Summit' "and then Mrs Hillary came climbing up after!"
Take your time to read this book. If you read it in a few days, as I did, you will be exhausted by the end!

Sylvia Nilsen has trekked a number of Camino routes in Spain and France, the Coast to Coast in England and the Via Francigena from Switzerland to Rome. One day spent on a ledge, hanging onto chains above an abyss in the Alps was enough! Although the official via-alpina.org website states that, "The trails are not technically difficult and are accessible to all walkers (with the exception of snowy periods)" she won't be trekking the Via Alpina anytime soon!

WANNA GET REALLY HIGH? READ THIS BOOK!

There is nothing quite like trekking 'with' Brandon Wilson and his wife, Cheryl. I treasure each and every book Brandon Wilson has written. He has a very special gift in which he is literally able to transport a reader to the place he is currently walking. This read is very, very special. In many ways, its more personal than the others! He continues to learn and share the art of humility. This time with much more humor.

Just as he wakes up each morning to begin another day, he also takes you! You are not just reading. In [his] world, one you thought you might be able to imagine, he unfolds this enormous, several-countries, trek. He is always immediate, in the now. You are too! At once he so personal and then again through the magic of his writing you step completely INTO his journey. You too have been invited to challenge each and every step! [Its really something, after reading for several hours, to literally look up and find yourself in your own home!]

What I experienced (once again) was how his non-fiction becomes my realty with each page. I could 'feel' the blisters of the up and down, up and down and down and up. I become starved [with him] and oh-so-very-wet from the constant and unforgiving rain. I'm shivering in [his] cold weather, wondering if there is hot food, a warm fire anda I-don't-care-how-hard-it-is-bed .... just let there be one at day's end! Perhaps at the next dawning, you will screech at sun's delight! You hold your breath, wishing it oh oh so to be true! In some ways Brandon's book reads like a thriller!

I could 'see' the Alpine vistas with him. I heard myself laughing aloud when meeting all the different native people. I could smell not only the beauty of alpine air and the majesty of it all, but I could even smell myself from [his] effort! HA! What a delight! 'We' become additional companions, as his readers. What a gift!

Truth is, with each of his books, Brandon makes one remember to be sensitive to even the smallest of Life's treasures. We learn to trust our relationships even more through reading his. And he teaches us to salute the smallest of victories, forgive our mistakes and what it takes to forgive others and move on, no matter what.

After all, as he demonstrates once again through his fine writing style, we are only 'one step' away to our own humanity, as well as oh so close to others.

Brandon's at it again

"Brandon's at it again" I thought as I looked over at the newest book on my wife's bedside reading pile. Over the Top & Back Again - Hiking X the Alps.

Having devoured Brandon Wilson's earlier books, and eager to read the next, I snatched it off her pile. His opening chapter title is appropriate: Leap Into Madness. Ever heard of Via Alpina? I hadn't either. It is a new trail putting together many old trails to form a route from Trieste, Italy over the Alps, through France and ending in Monaco.

Just the kind of thing I expect from Brandon, except there is a twist. This time he convinces his ever-trusting wife Cheryl to go along. Bad decision, Cheryl, unless you believe that mutual suffering brings marital togetherness.

The route has variations, marked by colors. The high route, the hard route, is red. Guess what route Brandon picked. Right. Did I mention that this puts them in the high Alps going hut to hut for five months? This is shaping up to be a good book. Not something I want to do, but good entertainment, watching couples coping with difficulty.

I don't want to spoil the story for you, so I'll just quote a few phrases. "Dammit. Just what have we gotten outselves into this time?" "The Universe ...had Other Plans" "Where is the trail?" "she tore off her clothes".

For any reader of traveler's adventures, but particularly for those of you that have hiked long distance trails, this book will be a delight. In the process of reading it, you will learn a lot about small village life in Europe, and most dangerously, you will have implanted an idea in the back of your mind. Via Alpina, maybe we should look into it.

My musical journey took me to many concert venues and nightclubs, into the heart of salsa. And little by little, I retraced the steps and recovered the story of salsa. Salsa Talks is based on interviews I performed with some of salsa’s best and best known salsa artists. In addition to interviewing them, I attended as many of their performances as I could so as to photograph the artists in performance as well as in my photo studio in New York City. My research process, which is ongoing, has involved reading other books on the subject, going to lots of nightclubs and, of course, dancing, and many times getting home at 4 AM.

Dancing has been an important part of my life since I was a child. I am Latina, and not just Latina but Caribbean. I was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. What are the implications of being Caribbean? We share an African ethnic heritage.

To me salsa is a music that celebrates life. It is like sprinkling your life with seasoning. It warms your blood and makes you feel good inside. It makes you forget about your problems. It is full of passion and joy. Salsa is like a rhythmic elixir that penetrates our senses, traveling from our nerve endings to our feet, our hips, our shoulders. It engulfs our very being with a euphoria that some describe as addictive!

But Salsa is a lot more than that. It is a music rich with tradition, innovation and evolution and the creativity of the Afro-Caribbean people.

The African influence is the essence of this music. It cannot be overestimated. The African roots are evident in the rhythm. And the rhythm makes you move. Salsa is dance music. Enjoy!

Salsa Talks: A Treasure, Resource & Historical Guide

I saw this book for the first time on the living room table of a friend's house. I couldn't wait to get my own copy. If you've ever danced salsa, listened to it, or studied its origins, you'll want to own your own copy, too. The book delivers portraits of over 40 outstanding people who were instrumental in making salsa what it is today. Musicians, promoters, managers, writers and others are featured in interviews, very high quality photographs and essays. Some have passed away, others no longer perform. So it is this work that keeps the memory of them alive. The publication is very timely as salsa today is at a crossroads. The creation of this permanent record of salsa's history will enable those who follow the great artists of the 70's and 80's to maintain a connection to the culture. This book is also an excellent historical resource with articles from writers, music historians and musicologists. Very Highly Recommended

With her book, Mary Kent helps you to grasp how Salsa was formed. Some sketchy interviews by some of the artists, but SALSA TALKS makes for a wonderful table book. A must-read. I'm Waiting for part two!

Highly Recommend It

I did this series with my daughter when she was 10 and I was very pleased with them. To fond a godly perspective on female puberty was really a God send. When my daughter started changing I used the mom's guide for ideas on gifts and special outings. Thank you Julie Hiramine for writing such special books!

I purchased this series in order to present this topic to my daughter in a way she would understand. I highly recommend reading this together as it is informational and opens the lines of communication about a topic that is often not discussed and can be scary for the child when it happens. I also love the way this is presented as something to be celebrated as you begin your journey as a woman.

Part of the Here Is series, this simple cumulative story both shows and tells the interaction of plants and animals on the east African savanna. One at a time, the clear, acrylic double-page pictures and the rhythmic words focus on a particular plant or animal, first close-up and then as part of the wide grassland environment. ("Here are the hippos / who are groomed by the tick birds / who perch on the impalas / who eat the pods / dropped by the baboons / who sit in the tree / which shelters the giraffe . . ."). Each new page takes a surprising leap, though those who look closely at each picture will see a hint of what's to come. The repetition is never boring, and children will enjoy the active verbs and the handsome pictures of the astonishing wildlife. PLB 0-7868-2134-5 A lovely circular, cumulative tale evokes the landscape and animals of the African savanna. Dunphy noses around the food chain as she introduces such creatures as zebras, lions, impalas, baboons, and elephants, against a backdrop of grass and acacia trees. Most of the animals, tick birds to hippos, make unobtrusive yet effective eye contact with readers, drawing them into the scene. Dunphy's wording is a pleasure to read, and her this-is-the-house-that-Jack-built structure is musical: ``who eat the grass/that grows on the plain/which turns green or brown/depending on rain:/Here is the African savanna.'' Leonard's artwork is equally engaging; he zooms in to catch the hippo's whiskers, pulls back to command the savanna's sweep, and maintains a steady flow of characters to keep the pacing crisp. Here is the African Savanna

In the style of "The House That Jack Built", this book employs delightful repetitions and stunning illustrations to give children a picture of the animals who inhabit the African savanna. I read this book on a regular basis to children of all ages (and lots of adults), and they all enjoy it. In fact, I have worn out my initial copy, and have had to order another!

This is a wonderful example of a circular story with excellent repeated lines and incredible pictures. It shows the connections of the various animals and plants of the Savanna.
A must for teachers and parents!

Ages 5-7. Both pictures and language are worthy of note in a text that employs a "this is the house that Jack built" format to link plants, animals, and climate. The frog, for example, who bathes in the rain, is protected by the bromeliad, which is held by the tree, and so on. The words read aloud with a distinct rhythm, and Rothman's artwork, in a palette of subdued greens and browns, shows readers the connectedness of the plants and animals, rather than showing flashy animal species in a Hollywood spotlight. A first ecology lesson that is lovely, poetic, and fun!

I highly recommend this book for its beautiful illustrations, and its elegant approach to teaching kids ecology: A cumulative verse format, which kids love to repeat and memorize.

Very helpful for teaching children about the importance of this ecosystem

Rain forests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6%. The world's rain forests are currently disappearing at a rate of 6000 acres every hour. As an avid birdwatcher I have been fortunate enough to have spent some time in parts of the Amazonian rain forest and have marveled at it's beauty as well as it's diversity of wildlife. It is extremely important that children understand the importance of this essential ecosystem since they will be the ones effected by it's absence or it's survival. "This Is the Tropical Rain Forest" is one of the Web of Life series of children's books and it's goal is to do exactly that.

In this book we are introduced to the ecosystem (the rain forests of Central and South America as used as examples) and it's inhabitants one species at a time as well as learning about how they interact. The repetition of the prose will help with the children's retention while reinforcing the interdependence of the plants and animals that inhabit this environment.

I have several of the books in this series and the artwork in "Here Is the Tropical Rain Forest", by Michael Rothman, is my favorite. The detail in the reproductions of his original watercolors are better than some field guidebooks that I have owned. The animals are portrayed in realistic poses and settings.

At the end of the book is several pages that give more detail about the ecosystem and it's plight. I have given my copy of this book to a local elementary school and they were thrilled to have it and will be using it while they introduce the children to the world's different ecosystems, including the all important rain forests.

Here is the Tropical Rain Forest is a delightful book to introduce the American Tropics to children. The story by Madeleine Dunphy follows a food web from figs to harpy eagles and jaguars. The illustrations by Michael Rothman are outstanding.
