A Great "How To" Guide for Landscape Water Conservation

This book deserves to be widely read, not just for people in the desert. I live in a region that gets nearly 45" of rainfall per year, and I can't wait to apply some of what I've learned from this great "how to" manual. Fresh water is a vanishing resource on our planet, and when we send it all down the storm drains, it makes its way from storm drain to stream to river to ocean: gone. To keep from draining our aquifers, we need to capture that water in our landscape, so it can percolate back into the earth, or be used by our plants.

My first project will be to divert some of the runoff from our blacktop driveway into an "infiltration basin", where it can be used by my trees and shrubs, and soak into the earth. "Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond, Volume 2" shows you how to do this, step by step, and also tells you how to build the simple but effective specialized tools you'll need (such as a "bunyip water level", so you know BEFORE a washout rainstorm where the water will flow).

Other topics include systems of berms and basins; terraces; diversion swales; check basins; and french drains. There are many helpful drawings throughout (whimsical but clear!).

If you're interested in water conservation, this book is for you. It's a tour-de-force on the subject of capturing and using rainwater and runoff in the landscape.

Inspiring manual for loving the earth

Here is a book full of inspiring stories and painstaking details about how to catch and use the thousands of gallons of water we have each been utterly wasting every time it rains. It is both a call to action and a detailed instruction manual, and in each category it is clearly written and compelling.

Being a fairly right-brained person, the stories from around the world about individuals and communities organizing to harvest rainwater and vastly improve their lives appealed to me the most. Descriptions of standing in the rain and watching the flow of water on your property made complete sense to me. I truly believe that you can read this book and intuit how to alter your landscape to harvest water and grow amazing plants without understanding the engineering behind it all.

On the other hand, if you are a left-brained, engineer-type, you too will love this book. It is extraordinarily well organized and includes everything you need to know to create small and large water-harvesting systems. There are pages of equations; there are lists and very clear descriptions of every tool you will need for every project. While none of this made any sense to me, I can see that it would be enormously helpful to many others.

Whether you live in the desert Southwest US or a rainforest, fresh water is becoming more scarce every day. This excellent book will help you harvest and husband this precious resource.

About the Author
Dimitris Bertsimas is the Boeing Professor of Operations Research at MIT's Sloan School of Management. He received his PhD from MIT in 1988, and he has been in the MIT faculty ever since. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and area editor of Operations Research. He has received numerous research awards including the Presedential Young Investigator award, Erlang prize and SIAM's best paper award in optimization.

Robert Freund is the Theresa Seley Professor of Operations Research at MIT's Sloan School of Management. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 1980, and he has been in the MIT faculty since 1983. He is former co-editor of Mathematical Programming and the winner of the teacher of the year award at Sloan school three times.

This book is well focused in the quantitative methods for decisión taking process.
I consider very attractive the presentation of the book and the examples are really interesting.
I think that the depth in the topics is appropiate for students with some background in statistics and OR.

Well written introduction to topic

I used this textbook in my DMD class at MIT and I have to say it saved my butt many times when the lecture material was not entirely clear to me. The book is well written and the practical examples they use are interesting. With very little explanation, you can sit down with the book and learn or relearn the material. Unlike most of my textbooks, I intend to keep this one after the class is over. Very nice guide to a useful subject.

Excellent text and guide to Data Models

For anyone looking for an introduction to the basics of data models this is one of the best in a long line of books in this area and the main book you will need. The presentation covers this important theory very thoroughly, including all the major topics. The presentation is crisp and while it will be best appreciated by graduate students and the industrial community, most of the presentation can be easily understood by an undergraduate audience with a strong background in probability.

Great Resource!

I've really enjoyed this book. So far I've read it twice. I'm a vegetarian who tried going Vegan last year. I stopped because I was tired all the time. I got this book to find out what I did wrong and how to do it properly. I haven't tried the recipes yet, but the advice is specific and makes me feel confident to try again.

In Sarah Taylor's book, "Vegetarian to Vegan: Give up Dairy. Give Up Eggs. The information concerning our environment pertaining to where our food comes from and how our food is manufactured is a critical factor to why our society has such a huge increase in diseases and many common medical conditions. One important factor I learned from this book is that you need to make sure you have a clear understanding of the foods you are consuming.

Foods such as milk may not be as healthy as you think even though we were brought up to think that milk creates strong bones and helps for grow. Scientists today are confirming that milk is a huge reason for inflammation, asthma, runny noses, rashes hives, constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhea, itchy, swollen eyes and iron-deficient anemia. By making a few changes in your diet, creating a healthy lifestyle and eating vegan can change your entire life.

In chapter 1 and 2, in the beginning of the book, beginning on page 17, Taylor not only discusses about how milk and eggs cause more damage to our bodies than good, she shows you how by providing you with endless information consisting of how our milk and eggs are is really made, what surprisingly unhealthy substances, chemicals, hormones, and antibiotics are in our milk and how our government lets manufacturers sell it to us in this unhealthy manner. Taylor also describes how these poor animals are tortured and keep in unhealthy habitats, which are not only bad for the animals, but vitally harmful it is for the consumers as well.

Sarah Taylor's approach to encourage others to become vegetarian and then consider becoming vegan was brilliant. All her information in her book was backed by scientific evidence not just by her opinion. She laid out the facts, explained to the readers why we need to rethink the way we eat and provided scientific evidence and testimonials to back up content in the book. She helped me realize that WE control our bodies. We can change the way we look and feel by providing our bodies with the vitamins and nutrients we need through the foods we eat. We do not need to rely on meats, eggs, dairy, over-the counter or prescription pills. We need to rely on ourselves and seriously reconsider the foods eat on a daily basis.

As you continue reading, you will find testimonials throughout the book, from others, who have used Sarah Taylor's advice and applied it to their daily lives. All of them discuss their success using Taylor's strategies and techniques. I am excited to try to implement a lot of Taylor's advice into my lifestyle. If others had success, I am sure I will too.

In addition, through reading this book I realize no matter what age you are you need to care for your body. If you have time to watch, TV or go shopping then you, have their time to put aside to care for your body the way you should. Diseases and medical conditions are a reality and if you are not careful, you could be a victim.

About the Author
Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1850, the son of a prominent engineer famous for building lighthouses. Although expected to continue the family profession, Stevenson’s earliest interests were literary. He studied law and was admitted to the bar but never practiced. Suffering from lifelong respiratory illness, he traveled extensively in search of a beneficial climate, living in Switzerland, the United States, and the Polynesian Islands. His first book was a travel book about a French canoe trip, but he soon branched out into poetry and fiction, including his massively popular children’s adventures Kidnapped and Treasure Island, as well as more subtle and morally ambiguous work such as his classic science fiction The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He died in Samoa in 1894.

Stevenson in full swing

An excellent companion piece to Stevenson's In the South Seas. This book gets into the mind of a trader on a small South Pacific island as he tries to eliminate (literally) his competition. Lots of mayhem told with a comical tone. Great book if you like reading Stevenson in full swing and in total control of his setting and characters. Perhaps this is Stevenson's Heart of Darkness, but told with wry humor and a fondness for he people he brings to life.

Stevenson's lesser known classic of imperialism in the South Pacific

In this little known story by Robert Louis Stevenson, a trader gets stationed on a small island in the South Pacific, but he immediately has trouble establishing himself as a taboo has been placed on him by the natives. The story brilliantly portrays how any foreigner be he white, black, or Asian holds superiority over the natives. Such relations between races on an isolated island were normal during imperialism but are shocking now. For example, the main character has free choice of any native girl to be his wife. Stevenson honestly portrays imperialism's influence on the island while also exploring the beliefs of the natives and how they can be easily manipulated. This was a great page-turner, one of those rare ones that left me thinking about it months later.

Stunningly brilliant portrail of Island Life & Prejudice.

Probably Robert Luis Stevenson's most brillient work. A sensitive probeing of race relations in a turn of the century setting involving an English Trader and a beautiful island girl.
An interesting story, a sensitive love story and an exploration of what is best and what is worst in humanity. This piercing examination is as important today as when Stevenson wrote it.
One can easily understand why he did not want it published in his lifetime.
