I'll admit that I did actually laugh a little.

I somehow got hooked on this series of books. Perhaps because they are so unique, or so awful, or weirdly funny, or both. Anyway, I just had to buy this third book in the "Help Mom..." series in a moment of weakness.

So, my take is that it isn't for children as I can't imagine my six year old even beginning to comprehend it. Perhaps for pre-teens who are interested in politics? I don't know.

But I do know that this third installment in this series at least has a story line that progresses with each page, which is more than I could say for the "Hollywood Hamper" story before this. And, I did see some subtle humor in the cartoons, which I looked at for detail in search of sight gags, and I found plenty.

So, if nothing else these will be great "period pieces" for this time in history for those looking back many years from now (assuming the liberals don't win the culture war and wipe this book out of existence...heh heh couldn't resist that one.)

My main criticism of this book is that it represents itself as a childrens' book, but it really isn't, and I would like to see at least a brief bibliography in the back where it's proved that Weary (Kerry), Snore (Gore), and Clunkton (Senator Clinton) really did play a direct roll in any of these "ban Christmas" court cases. This book seems to lump all Democrats together, and I'm not sure I feel so good about that.

It's about time for this book.

When I hear about children being sent home from school for wearing a shirt that says "Merry Christmas" there is something wrong. This book sums up the problem. Is it hate to not agree with the people who want to be intolerant to a social custom? no. Merry Christmas, Buy this Book.

A Drop in the Bucket

This book provides one tiny opportunity to try and balance the overwhelming blitz of liberal media distortions and control of the developing minds of little kids. I'm writing this one day after the Sunday Funnies in the Washington Post published 2 blatantly anti-religion strips, 1 hostile pro-immigration strip, and an anti-heartland (red State) strip in addition to the usual assortment of anti-Bush strips (Doonesbury, Boondocks, etc). Kids need to read books like this and its 2 predecessors in order to learn how biased the media and education system has become.

Marketing to Mom and Kid

I am a researcher and used this book to help me grasp the major issues and themes confronting marketers in understanding how moms make shopping decisions in order to construct a survey for a client. It is an excellent overview of contemporary parenting attitudes, the way mom's shopping behaviors change as their children get older, how different media are used to form opinions and make purchase decisions and so on. This is a huge topic of course, and the book is a very good overview with important and provocative thought starters. It can be read by anyone who is interested in the topic -- you do not have to be a researcher and you can be in the early stages of your career and still get a great deal from it. It is not super deep in any one area, but a great introduction to an increasingly critical topic.

A revealing look at the modern relationship between mom and kid.

The authors have done a great job painting a picture of how the modern mom (of GenX or GenY) has an entirely different perspective on work, child-rearing, and shopping from that of her Boomer parents.

The book discusses how the environment and lifestyle of the new mom influences how they raise their children, and how, in turn, their children influence buying decisions. The main thesis is that most buying decisions are a cooperative process between mom and child, and that marketers must take this into account when designing their campaigns.

Of the several child / mom marketing books I've read during the last few weeks, this one was the most eye-opening. It also feels the most credible, with lots of data-driven conclusions (though about half the facts and figures are not cited).

Just when the nation couldn't seem more politically polarized, when the rhetoric from both left and right is often at best divisive and at worst downright nasty, comes this wickedly funny book that paints a moustache on the whole political scene, left, right, and in between. But perhaps describing The Forbidden Political Dictionary as simple moustache-painting does it an injustice, for there is much wit, and even wisdom, in its pages.

Owing more than a casual nod to the Ambrose Bierce classic, "The Devil's Dictionary," John Clifton's "handy guide" is full of perverse definitions of common words daily bandied about by politicos and pundits, and manages to strike the funny bone and the truth bone simultaneously. Pervading the definitions (all alphabetically ordered, like any typical dictionary) is the sense of cutthroat rivalry among political figures, operating in the context of polished public images and devious private actions. A simple word like "gift" becomes "A self-damaging error made by a rival." The verb "smear" is merely defined as "Describe" in Clifton's political paradigm. How is a reader supposed to react to that? The first response is laughter; the second is realization that maybe someone is onto something here. The author observes in his foreword that the left, right and center "all use the same words and phrases with which to excoriate each other and congratulate themselves. So words become the glue of politics." Indeed. Could their commonality of vocabularies ultimately reunite Democrats, Republicans and Independents? Is there a possibility that our leaders of every stripe will one day see each other as (at least) verbal brothers and unite in a cathartic hug of recognition of their similarities despite their disparate partisanship? Nah... But it's fun to catch a peek into their unique minds to see what nefarious thoughts lie behind their congenial smiles. Liberally peppered with cartoon illustrations by the author, this book is as much fun to read cover to cover as it is by skipping around at random.

I Love this Book! It's politics for the apolitical.

Have you ever read The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce? When I was in my late teens I went through a stage where I was reading whatever I could get my hands on about witchcraft. Many girls go through this, probably because when you're a teenager you feel like a witch--misunderstood, alienated, and persecuted. I added The Devil's Dictionary to my small collection, bought only on the strength of the front cover which was red and featured tiny demons.

If you've read The Devil's Dictionary you know that it is not a book about demonology or witchcraft. Instead, it's a small dictionary that offers perverse, ironic definitions of a selection of terms. It translates what people say into what they mean. For example, Bierce defined "lawyer" as "one skilled in the circumvention of the law." I was not disappointed in this little volume; I found it amusing and accurate. Even as an adolescent, I was cynical (as defined by Bierce, a cynic is "a blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be.")

Many years have passed, and another slim volume with a red cover has been published, The Forbidden Political Dictionary- Complete and Unapproved. Again, it is a dictionary of terms, many of which did not exist when Ambrose Bierce wrote, with their true meanings. Written by John Clifton, The Forbidden Political Dictionary defines "lawyer" as "One versed in litigation and skilled in prevarication who represents clients and misrepresents facts in order to beat the law." Like me, John Clifton is an admirer of Ambrose Bierce. I know this because I read the forward to his book, something he thinks no one will do.

Clifton is also a cynic, which he defines as "Perceptive person who sees falsity where others see truth and truth where others see falsity. Cynics are often deemed perverse, nasty souls, but are actually honest, nasty souls." His definitions will strike a chord of familiarity ("interim appointment, n. Sale of a vacated office") to those who are exposed to politics, even by accident.

I was delighted that one of the terms he includes is "yellow dog Democrat," one which my father applied to himself until he became a Republican. My southern husband had never heard that term until he met me, which I found odd because my father was from Nebraska, my mother from New York, and I from New Jersey, and we all used it. Clifton defines "yellow dog Democrats" as "traditional Democrats, identified with the old South, originally so-named because they `would rather vote for a yellow dog than a Republican.' Ironically they eventually became Republicans, presumably even worse than yellow dogs."

From "academia" to "zoo," Clifton boldly dares to cleverly define words of mass disinformation. Yes, he is taking shots at our political morass, but with a target that big, who could fault him? The Forbidden Political Dictionary is a perfect book to browse through, reading a little bit at a time, but I defy you to do that. Once you start, it's hard to put down

Bottom Line: Would I buy The Forbidden Political Dictionary? Of course. I'm a sucker for books with red covers (and this one would make a great gift for birthdays, graduates, Father's Day, etc.).

A Guide To What Politicians Are Really Saying - Highly Recommeded!

"The Forbidden Political Dictionary" is a very clever collection of terms used by our elected officials, all clearly defined so we will know they really mean. This is a fairly thin book at 88 pages of actual content, but does contain just about every political term and phrase I though worthwhile to look up.

The author, John Clifton, did a very good job at masking his political leanings and mostly avoided definitions that would overly offend any specific ideology. While most of the entries are what we all *think* when we hear the terms, there are a few really insightful definitions as well. I particularly liked the very first entry, "Academia", and the one for "Death Penalty".

This is a good "bathroom book" or as a gift for the overly political friend (you know, the ones who forward all of the emails or posts endless Facebook links on why the "other" party is evil).

How many of us have or will encounter a similar search in our own lives? A book you MUST read

I have just ordered my third copy of this book as friends are eager to borrow it once they take a look at the drawings and the pictures of these incredible young men who survived challenges beyond belief. I complain less and appreciate more after reading this easy -to- read book that does not get into the politics heavily but focuses on the everyday triumphs and challenges of these spirits who came to America through the grace of God. "Mama Joan" ranks right up there with the most dedicated humanitarians and because of her, over twenty lives have been forever changed. Having met some of the boys, I hope to meet her someday. Comprehensive and Caring

I would like to thank Joan Hecht for the wonderful job she did in presenting the complicated story of the Lost Boys of Sudan in a readable manner. She obviously did a tremendous amount of research into the history and culture of Sudan. Her comprehensive knowledge as well as her care and sympathy for these special young men shines through on every page. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing more about this fascinating and important subject.

The tragedy of the children of Sudan

I can only summarize my comment about this book in a few words. The author Joan Hecht did a wonderful task in narrating the frightening and heartbreaking experience of the thousands of lost boys of the Sudan,Africa's largest country. Their dangerous journey involving thousands of miles in a very hostile landscape is incredible. The author's very kind heart,sincere consideration and admiration for these children is worth more than all the gold of the world. Very highly recommended for young and old.

Frank O. King created what is arguably the longest-running story in comic strip history, Gasoline Alley. Begun in 1919 as a simple topical gag strip about the new fad of automobiles, in 1921 the tone of the feature changed forever with the introduction of a foundling baby named "Skeezix." Inspired by King's own son, Robert Drew, the life and development of Skeezix soon became the strip's focus, following him through childhood, adulthood, and his own eventual parenthood. Neglected for nearly eighty years, this selection of King's beautiful Sunday pages are presented here in full, original size for the first time ever, demonstrating his experimentation and mastery as an artist. Supplemented by King's personal photos and biographical notes by Jeet Heer, Tim Samuelson and Donald Phelps, Sundays with Walt and Skeezix presents Frank King's art the way he intended it to be.

Worth every cent

I have snapped up the dailies of Walt & Skeezix as quickly as they come out. The sunday spreads are well known for the magnificent artwork, and as soon as I found that at least some of them could be found in book form, I knew I had to have it. I am not disappointed, and have marvelled at the artistry of Frank King. Too bad comics today cannot be as well executed as these (with the possible exception of "Mutts" by Patrick McDonnell).

This gigantic collection is worth every cent. Fantastic art - in it original size - great color and the warm and wonderful characters that Frank King vividly brings to life. This and the first three volumes of dailies are musts for any collection of classics.

A Thing of Beauty and a Joy Forever!

Sunday press is to be commended on every account. This oversize volume so far exceeds expectations that I can't imagine anyone producing anything finer. Color, graphic reproduction, binding, dustcover, extra posters and surprise enclosure. Research and scholarship. Finally shipping and communication with the buyer (yours truly), all above and beyond compare. Thank you Amazon, thank you Sunday press, and most of all, thank YOU Frank King for the years of nonpareil illustration and story telling.
