A Personal Look at Paris

I'm thinking of moving to Paris and was interested in finding out more about what kind of opportunities will be available to me as an artist. I know Veronique Vial's work from many years of reading her glossy coffee table books about the Cirque du Soleil and her Hollywood friends, so I knew I was in good hands.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. No matter if she takes you to the St. Germain des Pres or to the Eiffel Tower, Vial has a way of making everything look new for the very first time, even the age-old cobblestones of Paris. She invents a surrogate for us to identify with, whom she calls, "The Cordial Traveller." Believe me, he is no Gene Kelly.

My only complaint is that the model, the Cordial Traveller, doesn't have very much personality. He observes things with a stoic look, as though his mind was somewhere else. Many actors have that quality of repose, as they are always processing experience to use on the stage or on screen, but this guy goes too far. He sees many interesting things but seems only interested in making sure the camera catches him displaying his better profile.

Outside of that, this book is a worthy successor to Diane Johnson's novels about American emigres to Paris, or even a book like James Baldwin's GIOVANNI'S ROOM. People who love Veronique Vial, of course, will hardly be disappointed. In a way, this book is a more private peek into what makes a fine photographer tick, like a map of her mind. We loved her photos of the stars of Beverly Hills cavorting in their swimming pools, but these feel closer to home, more personal.

Outstanding

To begin -- this book is only for Bible believers. If you believe the Bible to be fable, there is nothing here for you. Additionally, this topic ("kosher eating") is one that is normally associated with the eating regimen of observant Jews. Well, Bennett's book, while certainly applicable to and of use to said Jews, is targeted at Christians whatever their ethnicity may be. This is true of all of the topic books in Bennett's excellent Walk in the Light series.

Now, there are countless books on the topic of what Bible believers should or should not eat. This book is unique. It is singularly readable, yet very carefully researched to mine out what the Bible says on the topic. The author explores history and pagan influences in Christianity. His familiarity with and frequent inclusion of Hebrew words, terminology, and traditions/customs adds greatly to this work.

The title gives away Bennett's conclusion (that biblical dietary laws apply to all believers). Bennett is quite logical and persuasive in his argument. I encourage you to investigate this.

I would add that the use of the term kosher is in itself often misused or misunderstood. In its purist form, "kosher" is rather synonymous with Jewish "kashrut" law . . . which includes a very complex system of rules including those for proper slaughter, and keeping meat and dairy separate, including systems of separate dishes and utensils. The biblical commandment that Bennett champions however, is simply the abstention from eating UNCLEAN foods as clearly described in the Bible (for example pork, or shellfish). Complex kashrut law ventures into the extra-biblical territory that critics (perhaps Jesus being one of them) would label "commandments of men". Bennett is not interested in that.

I have read two of the other books in this series (Names, and The Sabbath) and I can sincerely say that I've never read anything quite like this. Very readable, very convincing, very important. A must read for every genuine Christian.

Todd Bennett addresses the underlying expression of the Father's love contained in His instructions concerning food. This fascinating volume deals with many issues - the Christian tradition of nullifying the Scriptural dietary guidelines, the manner in which Judaism has added many rabbinical teachings regarding food to the Torah, and the connection between Scriptural food guidelines and concern for healthy eating and the humane treatment of animals.

Well Done Book!

"Kosher," by Todd D. Bennett, is a well written, thorough look at the subject of clean and unclean foods. It is the best book or article for that matter that I have found on this important Scriptural subject. God (Elohim in the Hebrew) uses the same Hebrew word tamei when describing the pollution and defilement which results from eating polluted animals or participating in prohibited sexual acts; all are abominable. The Scriptures declare homosexuality to be an abomination (Lamentations 20:13) and declare the death penalty for it. The same goes for idolatry (Deuteronomy 17:2-6), witchcraft and sorcery (Deuteronomy 18:9-14 and Lamentations 20:27), a lying tongue and and hands that shed innocent blood (Proverbs 6:16-19). All of these acts are abominations and all are punishable by death. Just like these other despicable acts, eating forbidden meats is also an abomination. This is truly a serious matter in Elohim's eyes and should be be treated as such by everyone who loves and longs to please him. It behooves us to know which meats are kosher or clean and which meats are an abomination and abstain from eating the forbidden ones.

Our Messiah did not come to abolish the law, but rather to fulfill it. Like these other grievous sins which are still an abomination to Elohim who is always the same, so is eating unclean meats still despicable to him. The word abomination means, an action which Elohim loathes, an object of disgust or an odious habit. The meaning of the sheet let down for Peter and other Scriptures which when improperly understood would lead you to believe that eating unclean meats is now O.K. are explained in the book. Jewish traditions which are not found in Scripture are also discussed in the book.

Crushed is a book about pastors of American churches in this generation. It is filled with stunning statistics and heart wrenching stories. The author is a seasoned veteran of pastoral ministry for three decades and is now the founder/president of a ministry to people in ministry called, Encouragement Dynamics.

The prime directive of Encouragement Dynamics comes from the heart of a pastor and his wife who love other pastors and their wives now laboring in God's harvest. Gary and Georgia Pinion have dedicated themselves to care for the shepherds and their families of today's churches.

The heart of the book is wrapped around the experiences of pastors interviewed by the author who have been "crushed" by cruel circumstances and unrealized expectations. Citing from no less than three dozen published sources and from numerous personal accounts derived from correspondence, Dr. Pinion takes the reader into a quiet corner of silent sorrows and private pain. It is no wonder that he has picked up the cause to expose the crisis and encourage the survivors. It is not an easy journey to serve with a calling from on high but most are unaware of the losses incurred in the pastoral ministry until books like this confront those issues.

Descriptive, Not Prescriptive

As a pastor for over 20 years, I could relate to almost everything the author was sharing. The problem was that it sounded more like a journal of complaints or warnings for those who might dare enter ministry than a book designed to help "crushed" ministers. It's a great book if you want to have your "crushed" feelings validated, but it's not so great if you are looking for practical help out. I kept thinking, "Yes, you're right! Now give me some suggestions as to how I can deal with being so "crushed." It never happened.

Dona Vitale has been an independent qualitative research consultant since 1987 when she established Strategic Focus Inc in Chicago. Before striking out on her own, Ms.Vitale worked at Foote, Cone & Belding Advertising as vice president and associate research director and in various positions in direct and database marketing.
