Each new page takes a surprising leap, though those who look closely at each picture will see a hint of what's to come. The repetition is never boring, and children will enjoy the active verbs and the handsome pictures of the astonishing wildlife. PLB 0-7868-2134-5 A lovely circular, cumulative tale evokes the landscape and animals of the African savanna. Dunphy noses around the food chain as she introduces such creatures as zebras, lions, impalas, baboons, and elephants, against a backdrop of grass and acacia trees. Most of the animals, tick birds to hippos, make unobtrusive yet effective eye contact with readers, drawing them into the scene. Dunphy's wording is a pleasure to read, and her this-is-the-house-that-Jack-built structure is musical: ``who eat the grass/that grows on the plain/which turns green or brown/depending on rain:/Here is the African savanna.'' Leonard's artwork is equally engaging; he zooms in to catch the hippo's whiskers, pulls back to command the savanna's sweep, and maintains a steady flow of characters to keep the pacing crisp. Here is the African Savanna

In the style of "The House That Jack Built", this book employs delightful repetitions and stunning illustrations to give children a picture of the animals who inhabit the African savanna. I read this book on a regular basis to children of all ages (and lots of adults), and they all enjoy it. In fact, I have worn out my initial copy, and have had to order another!

A first ecology lesson that is lovely, poetic, and fun!

I highly recommend this book for its beautiful illustrations, and its elegant approach to teaching kids ecology: A cumulative verse format, which kids love to repeat and memorize.

Very helpful for teaching children about the importance of this ecosystem

Rain forests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6%. The world's rain forests are currently disappearing at a rate of 6000 acres every hour. As an avid birdwatcher I have been fortunate enough to have spent some time in parts of the Amazonian rain forest and have marveled at it's beauty as well as it's diversity of wildlife. It is extremely important that children understand the importance of this essential ecosystem since they will be the ones effected by it's absence or it's survival. "This Is the Tropical Rain Forest" is one of the Web of Life series of children's books and it's goal is to do exactly that.

In this book we are introduced to the ecosystem (the rain forests of Central and South America as used as examples) and it's inhabitants one species at a time as well as learning about how they interact. The repetition of the prose will help with the children's retention while reinforcing the interdependence of the plants and animals that inhabit this environment.

I have several of the books in this series and the artwork in "Here Is the Tropical Rain Forest", by Michael Rothman, is my favorite. The detail in the reproductions of his original watercolors are better than some field guidebooks that I have owned. The animals are portrayed in realistic poses and settings.

At the end of the book is several pages that give more detail about the ecosystem and it's plight. I have given my copy of this book to a local elementary school and they were thrilled to have it and will be using it while they introduce the children to the world's different ecosystems, including the all important rain forests.

Perfect for Brides to be!

I've purchased this book as a sort of "gag gift" for two of my engaged friends for their bachelorette parties. Each time it was a big hit and everyone loved the idea. Toss this book, a cute apron, and some sexy panties into a gift bag and you're good to go for any bachelorette party!!!

Disappointing as a cookbook!

I am quite disappointed in this book as an actual "cookbook." The prose is contrived and almost comical in its attempt to be erotic, but I can respect the fact that suggestive words and alliterations can be fun, or even inspiring, for some. However, as much as I enjoy the erotic in life, I purchased this book for the express purpose of finding some nice recipes, not just for titillating text, and it is sadly lacking in the recipe offerings. There are some very interesting tidbits on food history and origin, and some of the recipes are indeed delicious sounding -- there just isn't enough of them to satisfy what I was looking for when I bought the book. However, I do find it an amusing read.

About the Author
Dr. Anthony J. Gribin and Dr. Matthew M. Schiff grew up and attended high school during the doo wop era. They met for the first time in 1975 and, roughly fifteen years later, decided to write a book on a subject they had always loved: doo wop music. Doo-wop: The Forgotten Third of Rock 'n' Roll was published in 1992. Years later, aware that there was much more of Doo wop's story to tell, they have written this book. Dr. Gribin, a clinical psychologist, and Dr. Schiff, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, both live in New Jersey.

This book obviously was a labor of love for its authors. Unfortunately, that does not mean it's a great book.

At 496 pages in a large format, it contains a lot of information, including many black-and-white photos. More than 200 of those pages are a listing, by artist (which they call a "songography"), of perhaps 20,000(!) doo wop songs. There's also a somewhat more detailed list of what the authors consider "The Best 1,000 Doo-Wop Songs". This list is not ranked from #1 to #1,000, however; it also is alphabetical by artist. Neither list has a corresponding index by song title.

The 22 chapters look at doo wop from a number of angles, including geography, record labels, disc jockeys, vocal parts, gender, and race. There are numerous puzzles and quizzes for trivia freaks. Both the authors are from the New York City area, and that has strongly influenced the book's point of view.

If you are from New York and are a doo wop junkie, this book may be just right for you. Otherwise, perhaps not.

If you are looking for a reasonably objective, yet concise, treatment of the subject, this is not it.

If you are new to doo wop and are looking for an easily digestable introduction to the topic, it's not that, either.

If you're from another part of the country, be prepared for incomplete and sometimes inaccurate information on doo wop from your region.

And if you're a librarian or a disc jockey looking for a useful reference book (like the ones Joel Whitburn produces), this is not that book, either.

The photos look like bad photocopies. There are maps, but they're not well-executed. There is no index, an unforgivable omission in a reference book, or in any non-fiction book, for that matter. The inclusion of footnotes and a bibliography does not atone for that glaring shortcoming. The text tends to ramble and would have benefitted from some good editing.

Despite all those shortcomings I give it three stars instead of two because there IS a lot of information here. I give it three stars rather than four because, unless you read it cover-to-cover, you may never find the information you're looking for, and neither the text nor the typography lends itself to plodding through almost 500 pages.

A Disappointment!

I've been a fan of doo-wop music for a long time. I already had an earlier version (2000) of the book that showed some heavy use. The key part of the book was 230 pages of song data by artists groups. I knew that numerous record labels (at least their current owners) had released MANY CDs & DVDs that contained tracks not included in the year 2000 book. It seemed that a new book by the same name and authors would have new material but this was not the case. The NEW (?) book had simply copied the 230 pages and included them.... VERY DISAPPOINTING!

BTW, I don't seem to be able to give the book less than one star... another disappointment. If you don't have the earlier book the new one is better than nothing but now VERY incomplete.

This is a must have for all Doo Wop fans. It was written by two guys that hail from Philly. Very informative. I wish they published another. This was a replacement for my original, was the first printing. It is very hard to find.

About the Author
John Chrisman spent a semester abroad in Paris studying French and another serving an internship at a French company. He has also served as a peer advisor for the study abroad office at Western Michigan University. He lives in Midland, Michigan. Audrey Queyreyre has spent most of her life in Paris and has participated in several study-abroad programs during her university career. She has counseled study-abroad students at the university level. She lives in Paris.

Excellent Guidebook Very Thorough

This is a very useful guidebook and a unique idea for study abroad students. The book is basically divided into three sections: preparing for your trip, living in Paris, traveling Europe and France.

For me the biggest strength is the middle section "once in Paris." It covers basics as you would expect like housing, shopping, taking classes or working, safety, transportation, attractions, places to eat, clubs, tours, etc. However what impressed me was it also covers more specific things like finding a gym, student organizations, grocery stores, cell phones, renting a bicycle, calling home... I would definitely recommend having a copy if you are heading or plan to head to Paris.

An absolute "must-have"

Study Abroad Paris

I wanted to give it 4.25 stars. I mean, if you go by the French education system the book would be unable to get a five, because perfection is impossible. It's a pretty good book. It's helpful as a reference for getting to know Paris, especially in the nerve-wracking time upon arrival. It's better than a tourist guide in the sense that it tell you how to live in Paris, rather than what is pretty.
