David McLaughlin's "Soldiers, Scoundrels, Poets & Priests" concerning the history of the California Missions makes use of some interesting images throughout the book, and it is well balanced with good organizational structure. But it is also full of typos and grammatical mistakes. The very first paragraph contains one, and every chapter has 2 or 3 mistakes that make you wonder if anyone spent any time editing this book. Simply using "spell check" is NOT good enough! The writing is also very simple, which is both good and bad because it will allow younger readers to easily learn about the California Missions (GOOD!), but it will not challenge adult readers and may lead to bordedom (BAD!). I did learn some interesting things, though, so I will give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Worthless

I purchased this book from the point of view of someone who cannot tolerate wheat gluten in my food. Unfortunately, I found this book to be completely worthless. As you can imagine, steak, potatoes and vegetables simply don't contain wheat gluten. If you are ordering onion rings, the batter may or may not contain wheat gluten so the book suggests asking the waiter. Few employees have read the ingredient list on the bag of batter or any other pre mixed ingredients.

The book recommends asking the waiter about potential gluten content for almost any food served in the restaurant. I prefer not to depend on a waiter who has 8 other tables to wait on, 3 dinners waiting to be delivered to 2 tables, who may not get along well with the cook and who may have had a fight with his wife before coming on duty - all of which affect his mood and judgment.

While the book contains typical ingredients contained in the Mexican recipes listed, Mexican food recipes differ from cook to cook - often even in the same restaurant. Again, the authors recommend asking the waiter if the foods contain certain ingredients.

Common sense is a far better guide than anything offered in this book.

This book is the size of a passport and very organized and well written. The American Steak & Seafood and Mexican Cuisine Passport is perfect for making choices while traveling, or while dining at your favorite local restaurant.

This guide is extremely to use. It provides sample menus that you'd see at typical Steak & Seafood and Mexican restaurants. Then you are provided with descriptions of each dish and how it is prepared and the ingredients used. From there you are provided with specific considerations as to how the preparation or ingredient list may affect you if you have gluten or food allergy issues.

Useless to me!

I bought this book thinking it would be of great help to me. I found it to be absolutely useless. There are so many other valuable tools to use and informative books out there that I can only say - use your common sense - you know what you can and can't have & all you have to do is ask the server to check in the kitchen to make sure that thee either isn't, or won't be, any gluten ingredients used. I live very near NYC and I can name so many gluten free restaurants that weren't included that it's ridiculous. Don't waste your money.

I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....

The fascinating history of the Second Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War 1861-1865

Author and historian F. Mikell Harper has written and published a fascinating book on the Second Georgia Infantry Regiment and their history during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. This hard fighting regiment fought primarily in the eastern theatre in the Army of Northern Virginia and were engaged in the major battles of the theatre. This regiment was from the counties of Banks, Merriwether, Muscogee, Burke, Fannin, Cherokee, Whitfield, Marion, and Stewart. The men were from all different backgrounds from bankers, to farmers, from illustrators to "swamp rates". This was a hard fighting regiment that was always in the thick of battle and suffered numerous casualties.
The regiment fought in the following major battles (broken down into individual chapters):
- Tybee Island/Yorktown
- Seven Days
- Manassas (Bull Run)
- Antietam (Sharpsburg)
- Fredericksburg
- Gettysburg
- Chckamauga
- Knoxville
- Widlerness/Spotsylvania
- Petersburg
- Sherman's March
- Battle of Aiken
Mr. harper in this excellent overview provides the intense fighting that the reigment was in the thick of. At Antietam (Sharpsburg) the old "Burke Sharpshooters" Company D of the 2nd were fighting for nine hours until their ammunition ran out and their Colonel William Holmes tried to get more ammuniton but was killed as well as many of the junior officers and enlisted men. The second was also able to inflict many casualties during Antietam at the famous "Burnside Bridge" where it and the 20th Georgia fired at the Army of The Potomac (the 51st New York and the 51st Pennsylvania). At Gettysburg, on July 2nd, 1863 the 2nd Georgia was assigned to take the Union off of the hills of Little and Big Round Top and capture the cannons that were inflicting heavy casualties. The other noted that the 2nd Georgia was with the only brigade that broke the enemy's lines on Round Top and their flag was pierced with over 80 miniballs during the fighting.
Mr. Harper gives great overview of the action on July 2nd at Gettysburg and how they help Hood's Texas Brigade in their time of need when the 124th New York was driving Hood's Brigade off the field of battle. The 2nd Georgia as well as the 15th, 17th, and 20th Georgia arrived as the 1st Texas was almost decimated and the Georgia Regiments captured three Cannons and helped take Devil's Den along with the 44th and 48th Alabama Infantry. Mr. Harper also notes that the 124th New York Infantry managed to hold the Confederates long enough for the Union lines to be established along Little Round Top and while the 20th Maine received the glory for their charge, it was the 124th New York who delayed the Confederates long enough for Little Round Top to be secured from the Confederates.
The 2nd Georgia was transfered as well as the rest of General James Longstreet's corp to go to Georgia and reinforce General Braxton Bragg's army at Chickamauga where the 2nd was involved again in some fierce fighting. The 2nd Geogria was also at the Seige of Knoxville during the winter of 1863 and was transfered back to the ANV to be involved in the Batlle of the Wilderness and Spotylvania Court House. The 2nd Georgia was also at the seige of Petersburg and had very few men left when General Robert E. Lee surrendered the ANV at Appomattox in April of 1865.
The author in this fine book has diary entries of the soldiers and their loved ones that enhance the reading of this book and gives great detail in the daily lives and hardships the soldiers went thru. Excellent paintings and maps also enhance this book as well. In the final chapters, Mr. Harper gives the muster roles of the individual companies of the 2nd Georgia and lists each soldier if they lived, died, captured, surrendered, or deserted.
This is a great book that is a "coffee table" style of format and binding. It is a must have for anyone interested in the Army of Northern Virginia, the Battles that the ANV fought in, the history of Georgia during the Civil War, and any Civil War buff, historian, scholar, or student. It is beautifully illustrated, fascinating brief history of the regiment, and is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Waste of money

I was disappointed in the book. My great grandfather Archibald Alexander Bethea served in the 2nd Ga regiment co D and was not mentioned. Pictures not even depicting the subject topic clearly took up the majority of the pages and the information presented was that of a dull numeric narrative. The title made me think that I was going to be lead into a lively story about the sharpshooters - not.

It works......it's cost effective as well....

This CD-ROM worked great for me in preparing for the PMP exam. My friends in my study group were saying to use this other CD that was almost $300 in price. I tried the PMP Success Series product out and it worked perfect in preparing me for the exam. I was able to take separate tests by framework, integration, scope, time, cost, quality, communication, hr, risk, procurement, professional responsibility, initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing. This allowed me to focus on areas that I wanted to improve without wasting time in areas I was already doing well. It also included 4 complete 200 question PMP stype exams. It was timed, allowed me to mark questions and had full explanations for all the answers.

On a side note, this was different from the one in the PMP Success Series: Manual. That CD has a single 200 question test which is on this CD, but this CD has all the material above as well for a total of 19 or 20 different tests.

When I went into the test center I was very comfortable with the exam interface, as this prepared me very well.

My friends in the study group that had purchased the other company's CD for almost $300 ($250 on here) were impressed with this product as well. I really couldn't see a difference on the interface between this product and the real exam. I passed the exam with over 160 points and found the questions prepared me very well....

Better than nothing, but would not be my first choice again.

I bought this primarily because it was half of the cost of the Mulcahy software and I could get it shipped overnight. I had memorized the answers in the Mulcahy book and needed another source of questions. I also wanted to take at least one exam simulation. I don't regret buying this, but if I had it to do over again I would buy the Mulcahy software earlier in my studying rather than waiting until 4 days before the test.

If you are using the Rita Mulcahy book I strongly suggest that you spend the extra money for the Mulcahy software. There are confusing differences between the two authors. For example, Mulcahy asks a question in which 'all of the project work is done'. Johnson has a similar question, but the answers are different. To paraphrase an ex-president, it depends on what the meannig of "all" is. Stick with one vendor.

The software has an off-disk copy protection scheme that requires e-mailing the vendor for an installation key. The 'serial number' value that one needs to provide in the e-mail is generated during the install process. The e-mail reponse is not automated, and after waiting upwards of an hour I tracked down the vendor in Texas and got the key number via phone. The support folks were pleasant and helpful, which is worth something.

The program itself could use a good QA which is why I rank this as 2 stars and not 3. At least one answer is mathematically wrong, one question offers the same answer choice ("Functional Management") twice, and the 'flashcard functionality' malfunctions due to a display issue. Apparently I got a version that was supposed to have the functionality hidden but did not.

There are some good points. In its 'learning mode' one can choose whether to display the correct answer when one answers a question incorrectly. The number of questions can be set as well as restrict the questions to single or multiple topics (e.g. Initiating, Planning, etc.) There is a percent correct progress bar that you can chose to display your progress through the testing. Once you have the installation key the program installs easily on both WinXP SP1 and Win2K.

In conclusion, the Johnson CD was not bad but disappointing. It could easily have been so much better. I would be remiss, though, in not admitting passing the test with almost the exact same grade as I was getting on the Johnson practice tests. Despite its flaws the practice exams appear to be reliable.

Doesn't prepare you for the actual exam

Although I liked the learning mode, the questions on this CD are way too easy. I aced the exams (90s and up) on this CD but did not do nearly as well on the actual exam (I did pass). Do not get lulled into a false sense of security: the exam is MUCH MORE DIFFICULT.

There are also annoying errors---the CD needs a little QA.
