Absolutely Delightful Even After All These Years!

This particular book has held some fascination for me over the years. First, it is written by Albert Payson Terhune, one of the finest authors of dog stories (Collies being his specialty) to every set pen to paper. I was raised reading collections of his stories and collect his books to this day. Secondly, I like older books; the older the better. The edition I am reviewing was the published in 1943. It is a first edition. It is printed on wartime paper which has turned yellow and is now starting to crack. Third, I love reading about women as I am quite fond of them...always have been. They are fascinating creatures!

Anyway, this is a collection of pieces; articles if you will, which first saw the light of day around 1916 in several different magazines of which Ainslee's Magizine is the primary source. (By the way, good pristine copies of this once extremely popular magazine are getting a bit hard to come by of late...pity.) Each chapter, of which there are twelve, investigates the life of various women who were famous or infamous, depending on how you look at it, in their day and time. They were considered, as the title of this book indicates, "Hussies." The women included here are:

Lola Montez
Ninon De L'Enclos
Peg Woffington
Helen of Troy
Madame Jumel
Adrienne Lecouvreur
Cleopatra
George Sand
Madame Du Barry
Lady Blessington
Madame Recamier
and
Lady Hamilton

Terhune could certainly bring a tear to the eye when writing about his beloved collies but I did not realize until I read this work that the author was also able to bring a smile to your lips. His very clever use of euphemisms is an absolute delight. As another reviewer has pointed out...this guy could turn a phrase! He can be quite funny is a sardonic sort of way.

The modern reader will find that the underlying sexual content of this work is very mild when compared to what is offered up today, but make no mistake, there is a strong underlying current of sexual misbehavior running throughout; you just have to be alert and judicial in your reading.

There are a couple of things to note about these short biographies. First, the reader must remember when they were written. The author uses many of what we would consider archaic words for today, but they were in common use when this material was written. If you are not familiar with the writing of this period, you will find yourself scrambling for the dictionary quite a lot. The same hold true for style and syntax. I personally find this delightful and is one of the primary reason I read such work.

Secondly, even an individual such as myself who is not a professional historian will question the author's scholarship from time to time. There is no reference to source documents here what so ever. The reader will find much hearsay and gossipy sort of facts stuck here and there. Remember, these stories were written for general popular consumption...to inform, yes, but more for amusement and titillation than anything else.
Along those same lines, you will find that not every word in this book is politically correct. Like many authors of his time, and people in general, he was extremely class conscious. I loved his paragraph describing the beheading of Madame Du Barry:

"Marie was sentenced to death, on December 7, 1793, and was beheaded the same day. Almost alone of all the Frenchwomen thus put to death, she turned coward at the last. The strain of peasant blood came to the fore. And where aristocrats rode smiling to the scaffold, Marie du Barry behaved like a panic-stricken child. She fell on her knees and begged for her life. She told where every article of value she possessed was buried, in her garden......They heard her on the steps of the scaffold, lost and desperate, mad with anguish and terror, struggling, imploring, begging for mercy, crying, Help! Help! like a woman being assassinated by robbers."

Well go figure...like I myself would not be throwing a hissy fit under such circumstances!

It is interesting to note that Terhune was an extremely popular author in his day, but like a contemporary, Edgar Rice Burroughs (Think Tarzan and John Carter of Mars), both men spent there lives wondering why on earth people would want to read or be interested in what they wrote...much less pay good money for it.

Hey, this is a good book; a fun read...give it a shot.

Who knew there were such goings on....going on so long ago. Not I.
Albert Payson Terhune who most people seem to know from his many collie stories is quite the witty writer. I often paused in this book to admire the turn of a phrase and his judicious use of euphemisms.

A new way of looking at the world, and yourself.

I just finished reading The 100th Human and felt compelled to leave a comment here on Amazon. I found many of the same insights in the story that I have found in my own life-travels. Truth is truth no matter where you find it. The book is well written and was a pleasure to read from beginning to end. It starts in a cave and ends on a mountain top, sort of going from the dark into the light. I know it is Chris Fenwick's hope to enlighten people with this book. She has done a great job with it so now it is your responsibility to read it. You will not be disappointed.

Good fictional story while putting forth sacred concepts

This book was one that I didn't want to put down - the storyline itself was fun and thrilling, but the sacred truths and concepts that Chris Fenwick weaved into the story were what had me so interested in getting to the next "key" or sacred truth that leads human consciousness into an elevated state and one of peace and love. It is a timely and a necessary read in the hopes that we each individually have the power to help change the self destructive course we all appear to be heading toward.

Picked me up off my feet and I will never stand the same.

This is one of the best books that I have ever read. Chris Fenwick does a wonderful job of combining a fantastic plot (with great characters), amazing ideas, and intriguing facts. The book is a very quick read in the sense that once you pick it up you will not want to put it down. The story continually keeps your attention with hair raising suspense while at the same time grounding some essential points home. She intelligently bring together different ideas such as "the 100th monkey" and the end of the Mayan calendar (which is the basis of the book). The fiction is extremely well written and I can honestly say as a reader this will not go back on the book shelf, only because I plan on re-reading it very soon. I would recommed this book to everyone.

Outstanding!

I am a history teacher and a Revolutionary War re-enacter of the British Army. This book has been very informative in refining our re-enacting soldier's "kit" and helping me understand how the British Army organized and equipped itself. "A Soldier-Like Way," is an excellent addition to the historiography of the French & Indian War/Seven Years War. The author, J.J. Gale, has deep research experience, and it clearly shows in this book. Gale does an awesome job documenting the equipment and weapons of the famous Red Coats, as well as explaining the artifacts' meaning. This is a wonderful book, and would be a great addition to one's book shelf.

About the Author
A graduate of Lamar High School in Houston, Texas, Rudy V signed a four-year scholarship with Texas Tech University in Lubbock. In 1985, he signed with the New Jersey Generals, a professional football club in the now-defunct USFL. Realizing that his God-given abilities were being seriously under-utilized, Rudy entered and won a contest with radio station KMJQ in Houston to be a DJ for an hour. That hour turned into a two-year contract that kicked off a fabulous radio career.

After four and a half years on the air in Houston, Rudy moved to Dallas where he currently hosts a top-rated show on 94.5 KSoul. Rudy uses the poetry of music as well as his own poetry to speak to the listener. "It's not about just playing another record--I actually feel the music," he says. And so do his dedicated fans, who often tune in as much to hear him speak as they do for the music.

It's all about poetry--the poetry of music, and the poetry of passion.

About the Author
Chris Summit, 37 years young, was born to climb but didn t find out until he was about 17. A Northern California native, he started climbing and bouldering with his friends on the local crags, Sugarloaf, Goat Rock and Mt. St Helena and was instantly addicted. Since then his natural desire has evolved into a passionate obsession, changing his life forever for the better. In his 17 years of climbing, Chris wrote the small guidebook for his hometown crags called The Wine Country Rocks and worked at the three North Bay climbing gyms setting routes, belaying and teaching indoor and out. He is currently employed at the brand new Rockzilla gym in Napa. He has done many first ascents of sport climbs, traditional climbs and boulder problems all over Northern California. His appetite for new, high quality, unique, and challenging rocks to climb used to drive him to travel far and wide. Now he travels less because he has found that what he is looking for is usually close to his front door.

Bay Area Bouldering Essentials

Chris Summit's new Bay Area Bouldering Guide covers all of the major bouldering spots in the San Francisco Bay Area, but also provides descriptions of less familiar, but just as high-quality areas along the North Coast. Of course, familiar long-developed areas like Castle Rock State Park, Aquarian Valley, Stinson Beach, Indian Rock, and Glen Canyon are included, but such pristine new spots as Salt Point, Twin Coves and Marshall Gulch can be found here as well. This volume should inspire a new generation of boulderers to continue expanding on the work of their illustrious predecessors. As with other guidebooks from SuperTopo, there are many all-color illustrations, topographics and maps that make it extremely easy to find your way around one of the most popular, major bouldering meccas in the United States.

Good, not great

Pros: Covers a lot of areas, many I would not have known about had it not been for picking up this book.

Cons: The descriptions of each route is hardly adequate. A half sentence describing a sit start somewhere in front of me is not always enough to repeat the specified line.

I found Jim Thornburg's 'Bay Area Rock: Climbing + Bouldering" to be much closer to what I wanted from my guidebook. It has many more and I find better photos, as well as lines drawn onto the photos.

The number of routes, is impressive, but the descriptiveness is lacking

I had read that this is considered one of the go-to resources for Bay Area bouldering routes. While it does have many routes, I'm really disappointed by the way they're described. Many times all you get is a single short sentence describing where the entire boulder is, and often no pictures at all. This can be very confusing in areas with many boulders. Routes rarely have pictures, and often if they do the route is denoted by an arrow indicating that it's on the other side of the pictured rock. With so little pictures, I might hope for descriptive words, but those often aren't there either.

Overall, if you can get it for a low price and are into bouldering, it can't hurt to have. But I would get it only as an addition to the collection once you already have Bay Area Rock - Climbing and Bouldering in the San Francisco Bay Area, which I consider to be a much more descriptive -- albeit more restricted -- resource.
